This EP was
released in 2003 as a kind of demo, but arrived not earlier than
2005 at our desk. It was sent around again to obtain a label
contract and record a first full length album. At the website of the
band I read that they are going to record that album in 2006.
Illuminatus originates from Nottingham (UK) and was founded in 2001
by musicians of different countries, but all living in England. These three songs are such a godsend that we can speak of a serious recommendation. At the boundaries of rock and metal, the five-piece band comes up with three strong songs which will appeal to fans of Anathema. There are some Anathema influences – just listen to the sensitive guitar solo at the beginning of ‘Wargasm’ – but they are surely not copying them. Vocals of Julio Taylor vary from soft and emotional to screaming and intense, the last a bit suggestive of Neurosis and Solstafir. He has a very good voice that pleases me a lot, no grunt at all, but raucous when needed. The three tracks are built around delicious guitar-lines, on one side we have pretty riffing, on the other hand there is an array of emotive graceful soloing. ‘White Lies’ is the song that reminds me the most of Anathema (‘A Dying Wish’), though the name Primordial crossed my mind for a second too. Keyboards have an important function concerning adding a gothic, atmospheric touch. These musicians deserve a lucrative contract with a label, immediately! For I am sure their first album will be a stunner! Also lyric-wise they are deep-draught, writing about social and political issues. Highly recommended for fans of emotional dark metal at the edge of (alternative) rock and metal. At their website you can listen to a lot of music and watch videos. You will not regret checking this out! A band to keep an eye on ! |
