This
is the first result of cooperation between musicians of four
different bands. With singer Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill) and
ex Hades guitarist Dan Lorenzo one might expect some thrash metal,
but that is not the case. Both men were active in the New Jersey
metal scene since the eighties. ‘Room Full Of Sinners’ will more
appeal to fans of sludgy southern rock (COC and co) and maybe some
stoner rock fans, because the sound is kept basic and rough on
purpose. It is fun to learn that the musicians got to know each other during the Non Fiction/Overkill tour in 1993, for that’s when I saw them live (Savatage played as third band) in a small village in East Flanders. Since then they had plans to do something together, but only now they have found the time. And still recordings were split; partly before Overkill’s appearance on the Gigantour with Megadeth and Lamb Of God, while the mix happened after that at the Crystal Studios by Mike Koenig. A hasty job? It does sound very raucous, unpolished, indeed. Yet it does not disturb me too much, because it adds a kind of vintage stoner rock spirit to it, also because of the fine vintage sound of Dan Lorenzo’s soloing. The songs themselves are kind of nitwits, you notice that this is just for fun, but riffs are sounding great and vocalist Bobby surprised me by using not only his hoarse screaming voice (think of Brian Johnson in AC/DC), but by singing dark and low as well (even a bit Zappa-alike). A title as ‘Leven Als God In Frankrijk’ immediately takes the eye, since this album is made by American guys and on the American release it is simply entitled ‘God In France’. It embodies the vision of life of these jolly, happy lads. ‘Evil, In The Bag’ (where Scott Müller of Dog Eat Dog is playing sax) got some radio airplay in the States and a videoclip is in the making. Before I tell everything here, go and read the interview I had with guitarist Dan Lorenzo. Those who have a liking for swampy rock with occasional Black Sabbath riffs (‘Best Of The Worst’ and ‘Queen Of The Down’), psychedelic and bluesy guitar solos, American rock with partly screaming partly dark vocals and no trappings, should have a listen to ‘Room Full Of Sinners’. |
