Dennis “Fergie” Frederiksen’s name will always be associated with TOTO’s Isolation album, although his work with LE ROUX, TRILLION, ANGEL and FREDERIKSEN-PHILIPS shouldn’t be underestimated. He’s worked together before with Tommy Denander on the Swede’s RADIOACTIVE project, but this is the first full-album collaboration. And what an album it is… One or two tracks might be a bit reminiscent of TOTO, but on the whole, it is especially JOURNEY I am reminded of. The songwriting is terrific – not exactly a surprise if you know that a.o. Ricky Philips (BABY’S, STYX) and Jim Peterik were involved. Still, the standard of songs is very high and I can’t find any fillers on this album. My favourites include ‘Let Him Go’, ‘Crossing Over’, ‘Silver Lining’ and ‘My Saving Grace’. Pure melodic rock/aor heaven. The title track is an absolute cracker. This might be one of the very best melodic tracks of the year so far. What a song! ‘Baptism By Fire’ is an album that has it all: fantastic songs, brilliant musicianship, a great production and even quite interesting cover art to boot. Fergie Frederiksen is absolutely awesome on this album. Now that JOURNEY is without a vocalist again, the band might want to keep him in mind. |
