A record that blows you away in a pulverizing way, that is ‘Skinnerbox v.07’! This Belgian band just did an extremely successful gig at the renowned Graspop festival, and of course this is due to the high quality stuff on their debut album. Yes indeed, this is a first record and the band even does not exist that long. They emanated of the ashes of two other bands Deformity and Regression in 2005, but when they were joined by the Dutch vocalist Niek Tournois the ball went rolling properly. A first demo was received very well, a show with Arch Enemy and Textures could be seen as a legendary highlight and this was only the beginning of their success story.

Scarcely one year after their foundation, they were ready with the material for a first full-length album. It was recorded at singer Niek’s home studio, but Textures’ vocalist Jochem Jacobs meanwhile discovered that this band was highly accomplished and he promptly offered to take care of the mix and mastering. Thanks to him we can enjoy such a powerful yet clear sound, making you hear every instrument distinctly in this mega chunky mass.

‘Skinner v.07’ offers forty minutes ultra chunky deathcore to the listener. Swedish death metal influences and melodic guitar skills put down a rigorous, dense sound, also because of the super tight drumming of Steven. Vocals have some affinity with hardcore roots. With Niek they have a great trump: the man has an enormous brutal throat which he turns into a regular rock voice during the spare moments you can take a breath (fragments in ‘Chains’ and ‘Fitting The Pieces’). The transparent sound of the whole album must be mentioned as well. It is phenomenal how much power a song like ‘Cold & Black’ includes, switching abruptly to the calmer ‘Chains’ then, with its marvellous melodious guitar leads. I could go on for a while, but this is not music to write an essay about, this is music you have to experience and undergo. Only then you will understand why Spoil Engine create so much moshpits during their gigs.
