It is
obvious, here’s been worked on with great care, ingenuity and
serious consideration about commercial purposes. I have to admit:
the first DVD of the progressive power metal band Kamelot is a
standout treasure. Nothing is left at hazard: it has been worked on
by more than two hundred men during two years, that is what
guitarist and founder member Thomas Youngblood tells us in the
introduction of the “behind the scenes” material. First of all, let’s make things clear: you have got the choice. Whether you buy the whole package with two DVDs and two CDs (at the double CD one can find the same songs as we see on DVD 1, no extras). Or you buy the double DVD. Or you buy the double live CD, only audio material indeed. One thing is for sure when you are watching all this: Kamelot is a popular band that is bigger than I suspected. They have been around since 1991, that’s quite a while, but if you have a look at the giant houses of Thomas Youngblood and drummer Casey Grillo during the “interviews” it becomes clear that rock ‘n’ roll is a lucrative business sometimes. But fans get value for money with this issue. On DVD 1 one can find the concert, filmed by eighteen cameras, the band did at the 11th of February 2006 in the historical Rockefeller Musichall in Oslo. To film this the famous film and video wizard Patric Ullaeus was hired who came up with a fantastic registration done by a super professional team. Earlier I was impressed by his registrations for Evergrey – their DVD ended up at number one of my year list – and it is true, the man does something special and extraordinary with a regular rock concert. That turns out very well, since the show of Kamelot includes a lot of theatrical elements. The songs of the gig mainly come from the last three studio albums of the band ‘Karma’, ‘Epica’ and the marvellous ‘The Black Halo’. The name Epica is dropped. The Dutch band which called themselves after this Kamelot album was allowed to open the show that night and on this DVD we find an interview with Simone Simons as well. She contributes to the show too, besides her a guest appearance of Snowy Shaw. DVD 2 has much to offer again and is a lust for our eyes and ears. First we get some interesting behind the scenes material. There are interviews which can be described as sight seeing in a friendly environment, there is the ‘making of’ of the video for ‘The Haunting’ and there are four video clips. Besides that a live recording of the Sweden Rock festival in 2006. Furthermore we have got the usual material of biographies, photo galleries and discography and after nearly four hours we are allowed to call ourselves true Kamelot experts. This is an incredible fantastic and well-done document for every Kamelot fan, but also an extremely compelling release for every fan of symphonic power metal. |
