English:

Are there still bands who can surprise you beyond expectation? Yes! The latest album by Finnish band Lordi was recorded in Finland again. For their two previous albums they went to Nashville and worked with Michael Wagener. Prestigious that is, but Mr. Lordi had probably enough of that. In their home country, the band took a new producer and found new inspiration. Their sound got a serious update for the better and the songs are well composed and more sophisticated, still very melodic but with a more progressive approach and it all sounds richer. There’s many metal bands around that go back to traditional heavy metal and do that very well, but Lordi does it better this time. Those who wrote these monsters off already are to be proven wrong. They even changed their costumes!

Nederlands:

English:

Metal Moth is a new British classic heavy metal band. They have a very American sound with a crystal clear production and tight playing. The band is going to release three ep’s and this is the first with four songs that show that they are no amateurs! This sounds very professional, the songs have good melodies and the five musicians are excellent players. Their female drummer surely knows how to handle the sticks and the rest of the lot sounds equally professional. Musically they owe a lot to the classic Metallica sound of their creative heydays. They burst with energy and their songs are fuelled by some good guitar playing and powerful arrangements. This is a very interesting new classic heavy metal band. They are worth a listen! These guys rock!

Nederlands:

English:

After their debut ‘The Hero, The Monster, The Myth’ in 2009, the heavy metallers from Cyprus are back with their sophomore effort. ‘Epic, utter power and steel’ the biography reads! My curiosity was aroused.

The intro or short first song places the beginning of the story in 1187. We’re in the crusades and by the end of the song we witness a clash of arms during a charge against Jerusalem’s walls, matched to the appropriate riff, it gave me goose-bumps. We embark for a brilliant trip with thundering drums, flashing guitar, pumping bass, but above all the more than versatile voice of Asgardlord, which masters the parlando, his mighty epical rolling ‘normal’ use of voice as well as inhuman high tones and manages to lay great accents in this strong example of song forging.

Time to leave the Middle-East after that and explore the medieval world with its narrow view on religion, witchcraft and other nice things. After the narrative, or rather exorcising, ‘Transgression’, some pieces in ‘Redeemer’ reminds strongly of early Manowar, but it’s mainly enjoyed a long and varied game of twin guitar wizardry. Then comes the hook of ‘Burn Magic, Black Magic’ which is carved fast and deep between the ears. In ‘Sarah Lancaster’, one of the lesser songs, if I’m critical enough, there’s nevertheless great guitar, but this time by the hand of the axe man of the legendary Cauldron Born.

The three last songs form more or less a whole being slower, heavier, more threatening than the rest of the album. The closing ‘Damnation’ closes the circle completely reusing some phrases taken from the first song.

Solitary Sabred definitely spearheads the legion of epical bands.

Nederlands:

Na hun debuut ‘The Hero, The Monster, The Myth’ uit 2009, zijn de heavy metallers van Cyprus terug met de opvolger. ‘Epic, utter power and steel’ staat in de bio! Mijn nieuwsgierigheid was gewekt.

English:

This fifth album of Woodtemple, the atmospheric pagan/black metal project of the Austrian Aramath, has been in the making for a long time. Previous album ‘Sorrow Of The Wind’ came out in 2008 and the recordings of current release ‘Forgotten Pride’ started in the studio in January 2012. It is a bit disappointing that we only get a proper half an hour of music, but you can purchase the nice looking A5 digibook format with a twelve pages booklet for your visual satisfaction.

That enjoyment is quite limited. Even though this atmospheric black metal seduces us to come up with comparisons with fellow compatriots Summoning and Falkenbach, this is way less in (recording) quality. Yet Aramath made again an appeal to his friend Rob Darken of Graveland – since 2013 his bassist as well – to eternalize his compositions in his Eastclan Forge Studio. But the global sound is underground and drums do not sound that great either. Intro and outro do have the necessary grandeur, they are epic all over with choirs that remind us of Manowar. Furthermore we get three lengthy compositions, in which acoustic guitars and remarkable percussion add any diversity in the atmospheric black metal. The vocals of our main man are blackened screams as dry as dust, once in a while suddenly switching to sturdy clean chants, but that does not happen often. Well, it all sounds quite fragmentary and untidy, but fans of true underground can check it out. The acoustic ‘Eternal Silence’ brims with gracefulness, but that is only a masquerade when you hear the bestial screams in the rest of the material. I liked ’Voices Of Pagan Mountains’ better.

Nederlands:

’Voices Of Pagan Mountains’ beviel me een stuk beter.
