English:

Although the title suggests otherwise, this is the fifth album by American melodic rockers Talon. They may be melodic and build on the AOR tradition, but they are certainly not wimpy. Their well crafted songs are played with energy and solid arrangements. The genre may be explored to the full, but Talon manages to make another enjoyable album that will enlighten even more a sunny day. The guitars wail around and the grooves are stimulating and Michael O’Mara is a fine vocalist and potent rock singer. Talon will not change the course of rock music, nor will they take the melodic genre a step further, but who cares if the quality of the songs and performance are this good.

Nederlands:

English:

For attentive followers of the metal scène it happens to be common knowledge that star producer Sascha Paeth once played guitar in a band called Heavens Gate. The history of this German band lies already sixteen years behind us; then we heard the last facts about them. Their final studio album ‘Menergy’ was released in 1999 and after a live gig at a festival in Sweden that same year, they disappeared out of the spotlights.

It all started in 1987 and in those early days the band got some significant help from Frank Bornemann of Eloy, a great formation that isn’t so active anymore either these days. In January 1989 the debut album ‘In Control’ came out. The band was also a success in Japan. Now we can enjoy a chronological and interesting ‘best of’ collection which shows that the band penned a collection of good songs. They play skilfully and smooth in Helloween style and with this collection we have a proper idea of the five albums the band ever released. Great nostalgia and it is diverting to watch their Facebook pages.

Nederlands:

English:

These Americans derived their band name from one of Deep Purple’s songs ‘Demon’s Eye’ (from their ‘Fireball’ album). After an EP in 2013 and ‘Leave The Light’ last year, they already deliver ‘new’ old school stuff.

They kick the album off with some stoner/doom, but soon there’s only doom left.
More specific, it’s eighties doom with references to the early seventies (think Atomic Rooster) with an occasional psychedelic touch, which, courtesy of the singer’s voice, made me think of Trouble. The slight ‘trembling’ (tremolo?) of his voice not only suits perfectly the somber, disconcerting mood evoked by their music, but even enhances it.

‘Poison Garden’ built slowly and brilliant, with barely contained threat, towards a boogie climax, before fading broodingly. ‘Black Winds’ is the most plain rocker of them all, where Erik’s voice sounds rather evil. The eerie ‘Please, Father’ has something of the early, spacy UFO. Closing ‘Sons Of Man’ is an epic catchy piece with damn threatening break and a great icing on the doom cake.

Somber journey down memory lane!

Nederlands:

English:

Canadian bands are famous for their excellent technical instrumental skills and Borealis is no exception on that rule. However, the band plays progressive power metal with an emotional impact in the vein of Evergrey, so that virtuosity is relished with fetching melodies, catchy vocal lines and impressive guitar extravaganza. Initially they launched the self-released debut ‘World Of Silence’ at the world, which resulted in a live gig at ProgPower USA. With success! The amazing successor ‘Fall From Grace’ happened to be a bit heavier and we could straight away recommend it to every single fan of the genre. This third album of the five-piece ‘Purgatory’ has the potential to give the band the great breakthrough all over the world. In the meantime Borealis even toured the US with Saxon and they are no beginners anymore.

That’s what they grandly prove on ‘Purgatory’ with a well-thought balance between heavy and emotional impact, an amalgamation of influences and a signature sound of their own. Heavy riffs with modern textures are always intermittent with atmospheric passages, while the link with Evergrey remains tenable, mostly due to the vocal timbre. The band knows how to add some haunting softer passages, with vocalist Matt Marinelli as shining star. Examples? ‘Darkest Sin’ and ‘Rest My Child’ make you fly away on a bed of contemplation without getting too mellifluent. Yet this album appears to be mainly build upon amazing riffs, a pinch of Gothenburg metal, heaviness and accessibility. We cannot repeat it too much: this is a great impressive and stand out band!!! We would have liked to join their tour with Evergrey in the States and that says enough. Please let them are rewarded with success in Europe as well!

Nederlands:
