English:

Fine! It seems as if Red Eleven took notice of our criticism in the review of previous album ’Round II’ (2014) when we wrote that it was a good album, but things got a bit too sleek and polished. That has been rectified on album number three of these Finns. ‘Collect Your Scars’ cuts loose really wild and heavy, at least during the first songs. The five-piece hailing from Jyväskylä prides itself on wanting to rock heavily. And they know how to do that!

For the time being opener ‘I Follow’ happens to be an irresistible entry with slightly epic atmosphere, fervent guitar solo and a pinch of sensuality. In addition it includes some rough passages and the video clip is frankly seducing. Red Eleven still plays alternative rock in which we find some grunge influences, but it is not so obvious anymore. The harmony vocals and catchy songs remained. Now they mention Faith No More as reference. Those influences are most noticeable in the opening track and the chunky ragging ‘All Emotions At The Same Time’. ‘Just A Game’ and ‘Different Kind’ continue the wild tendencies on this record. There’s a party going on here! But there are softer songs as well. ‘Last Grain Of Sand’ begins with piano, has beautiful guitar ornaments and goes towards a delicious outburst. Very good! ‘Know Yourself’ sounds a bit mediocre. The songs have the exact amount of melancholy, but most of them go in crescendo to wilder passages. For the romantic souls amongst us we can recommend ‘And So I Took His Life’ and ‘Too Much To Ask’ with its acoustic guitars and piano recital. Even firm rockers like ‘The Mark’ are supported by soaring synthesizers in the background. In brief, an album without complex structures, but agreeable to listen to.

Nederlands:

Nu haalt men Faith No More aan als ijkpunt. All Emotions At The Same Time’. ‘Just A Game’ en ‘Different Kind’ zetten de wilde tendens verder. Zeer tof. Voor de romantici onder ons kunnen we ‘And So I Took His Life’ en het met akoestische gitaar en piano opgesmukte ‘Too Much To Ask’ aanraden.

English:

For their eleventh disc, Kurt Vanderhoof convinced veteran Howe to return to his old band. His powerful voice was an invaluable asset on three of their albums in the nineties and on this record the same magic returns.

The opener warms us up with a simple, but efficient riff and a renewed acquaintance with Mike’s voice. ‘Killing’ has a catchy chorus in a sturdy piece of metal, with room for a long break, in which the guitar solo has the main part. Acoustic guitar opens the fast and catchy ‘No Tomorrow’ followed by a long drumroll before the song really starts and reminds of the sound of ‘Hanging In The Balance’. The deserved clip to the song, shot in an abandoned nuclear plant, was my first contact with this album, as it was available on YouTube since a few weeks before the release. Following tracks, ‘Signal Path’ and ‘Sky’, are the longest songs by far. Pretty epic, with catchy simple riffs, solo’s, heavy passages alternated with acoustic or quieter ones, with a rather dark undertow. ‘Needle And Suture’ is driven by a nervous, quick drum pattern, while ‘Shadow’ has something of a nervous undertow too, but due to the staccato riffing, though on the whole the song is slow and pumping, with again a ‘Hanging In The Balance’ echo. ‘Blowing Your Mind’ is a dragging, threatening track, followed by a catchy, sharp piece. ‘It Waits’ has semi-psychedelic passages with distorted voice before it turns heavy, while ‘Suffer Fools’ closes straightforward catchy and heavy.

Fine album! What did I say? Damn fine album with modern varnish over their nineties sound.

Nederlands:

Knappe schijf! Wat zeg ik? Verdomd knappe schijf met modern vernis over hun nineties sound.

English:

Death Metal is out of my way, but on receiving this album, I decided to give it a spin. Dominanz is a follow-up of the Cult Of Deception Project which was lead by Roy Nordaas. This album was first released in 2014, but now it has been given en new release and rightly so. This trio has an almost orchestral and also melodic sound. The harsh voicing by Roy Nordaas is a matter of taste, but even as a fan of ‘clean’ singing, I can dig it because it is part of a bigger sound that matches all elements of the music. The doomy heavy riffs are really good and the use of synth gives the music also an industrial touch without losing the drive of the guitars. The pounding drums do the rest. With an excellent mastering job by Jens Borgen, this album sounds deep, dark and heavy.

Nederlands:

English:

After doing a number of Emperor gigs with retrospective approach, Ihsahn concentrated himself on the next album as solo artist. This time he took the challenge to write compact, accessible songs, in contrast with the very experimental previous album ’Das Seelenbrechen’. Well, even that discipline he manages! This time the compact songs surely have that signature Ihsahn sound, but one can find more regular, proper heavy metal structures. While Ihsahn played most of the instruments, as usual, he invited some friends as well: Matt Heafy (Trivium) in ‘Mass Darkness’, Einar Solberg (Leprous) on guest vocals, drummer Tobias Ornes Andersen (Shining, ex-Leprous), Jorgen Munkeby (Shining) on saxophone in ‘Crooked Red Line’, while the Norwegian author Hans Herbjornsrud can be heard in a solemn speech in Norwegian language during the bonus track ‘Til Tor Ulven (Søppelsolen)’, exclusive for the special edition. This is once again truly captivating.

Ihsahn keeps his finger on the trigger, we already notice that in the stamping opening track ‘Disassembled’, as well as in the rocking ‘Mass Darkness’ with its fervent guitar leads. The video clip, inspired by the North pole expedition of Fridtjof Nansen is really breathtaking! Some progressive, jazzy textures crawl in during the mighty ‘My Heart Is Of The North’, with its sudden contemplative part towards peaceful areas. The biggest assimilation from my side demands ‘South Winds’, which combines modern ambient sounds with a catchy chorus. Next darkness rolls in during the piano featured ‘In The Vaults’. Any melancholy in vocals pops up in the wild rocking ‘Until I Too Dissolve’; menacing moods reign in the snappy ‘Pressure’. The contrast between progressive structures and catchy choruses is kept alive in ‘Frail’, while saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining) shines one more time in the majestic ‘Crooked Red Line’. However, the magnum opus of this album happens to be ‘Celestial Violence’, inspired by the mysterious universe we are all part of. As if that is not enough, we are finally submerged in lyrical brilliance of author Hans Herbjornsrud in Norwegian language, initially only supported by quiescent piano, later it goes in crescendo to hurricane force with savage, dissonant guitars. What an amazing listen experience ‘Arktis’ turned out to be! Unique yet recognizable, but flabbergasting with all its enchanting sounds as well!

Nederlands:
