The Old Army Fortress in Josefov, Czech Republic, will open its hell gates and welcome the 15th anniversary edition of the Brutal Assault Festival. The anniversary volume will take place on the 12, 13 and 14 of August 2010 and you should not miss it! This year’s edition promises to be the best “Brutal Assault” ever. Marathon of extreme music can be started! The open air festival Brutal Assault 2010 will present during 3 days on 2 stages the best from various extreme music genres, in total more than 75 bands from around the world.
Anniversary volume needs special bands. The festival will take place inside the Old Army Fortress in Josefov (approx. 130 km from Prague). Unique atmosphere and history of the Fortress is an integral part of festival’s image and provides to our festival-goers unusual experience. The both stages are on the main square and the festival “accessories” are placed in the surrounding space. The festival-goers will discover more than 30 refreshment kiosks with various kinds of food for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans, 4 big “beer tents” offering 5 brands of draught beer (1,15 EUR per 0,5 liter!) and also several kiosks with wide offer of various kinds of alcoholic drinks. Visit our “chill out” zone on the place called Greenfield! This place is inside the Fotress, just a small walk from the main square with both stages. Greenfield is a place for your pleasure and relaxation when you want to escape from the sound terror. It is a place for recharging your batteries. Among others you can find there monster “Metal Market” with more than 50 stalls and Horror Cinema Tent. Visit also our natural stand, a place for those who want to see the festival rush from above directly opposite both stages. We call it "natural stand" since it reminds a hillside where you can stay standing or sitting. This year first time with separate sound coverage!
The camping site is approx. 300 m from the festival ground on a grass field. The camping site also includes “VIP Camp” which offers camping in the fenced area, toilets, washbasin and depository for use of the VIP camp inhabitants exclusively, a free 3-day pass for the natural stand and one time pass to the showers situated in the camping site. VIP camp is guarded 24 hours a day from Wednesday August 11th till Sunday August 15th. There are no parking capacities at the camping site. Parking is possible in the near roads and streets of Josefov. Please respect the local traffic signs.
As the festival celebrates its 15th anniversary edition and the line-up is becoming stronger and stronger, it is highly recommended to buy your tickets in advance. The capacity of the Fortress is approx. 15000 persons.

Edenbridge is a small village in England, but for most metal fans, Edenbridge stands for the female-fronted symphonic metal band from Austria. This productive band already releases its seventh studio album. The core of the band is guitar player and composer Lanvall and his girlfriend Sabine. The emphasis of the music certainly lies on the bombastic, symphonic sound of choirs, symphonic orchestra and keyboards. The Czech Film Orchestra is playing the classical symphonic parts, just like they did on the previous album. Lanvall’s guitar gives the heavier touch to the music but also helps adding melodic solos to the already very melodic tracks. His speed and virtuosity are without any doubt. And then there’s of course Sabine Edelsbacher, looking and sounding like an angel; who gives the final touch to the tracks. All of this has been perfectly produced by Karl Groom of Threshold. The album starts and ends with a Carmina Burana-ish choir and a very bombastic symphonic tune. The nine songs in between go from heavy tracks, like the title track and “Further Afield” to more power ballads like “Skyline’s End”. The latter especially stands out because of a more folky middle part. My favourite is “Bon Voyage Vagabond” because it contains every facet of Edenbridge’s music and opens with an almost psychedelic intro. Also worth mentioning is the guitar solo in “Brothers on Diamir”, one of the best solos I heard in a long time. Two questions come to mind. How would this sound with some heavier, rougher vocals? And isn’t it time that Edenbridge does something new? I like this album very much, but there’s not that much difference with their previous work.

Edenbridge is een klein dorpje in Engeland, maar voor de meeste metalfans staat Edenbridge voor de ‘female-fronted’ symfonische metalgroep uit Oostenrijk. Deze productieve groep is al aan hun zevende studio album toe. De kern van de groep bestaat uit gitarist/componist Lanvall en zijn vriendin Sabine Edelsbacher. De nadruk ligt bij hun muziek vooral op het bombastische, symfonische geluid van koren, een symfonisch orkest en de keyboards. Het Czech Film Orchestra speelt de symfonische, klassieke klinkende stukken, net zoals ze al deden op het vorige album. Lanvall’s gitaar geeft de hardere noot aan de muziek maar voegt ook melodieuze solo’s toe aan de reeds zeer melodieuze nummers. Zijn snelheid en virtuositeit staan buiten kijf. En dan is er natuurlijk nog Sabine Edelsbacher, die eruit ziet en klinkt als een engel en de spreekwoordelijke kers op de taart toevoegt. Al dit moois werd dan nog meesterlijk geproduceerd door Karl Groom van Threshold. Het album begint en eindigt met een Carmina Burana-achtig koor en een zeer bombastisch, symfonisch thema. De negen nummers daartussen gaan van hevige songs, zoals het titelnummer en “Further Afield” tot eerder power ballads zoals “Skyline’s End”. Het laatste steekt er vooral bovenuit door een folky middenstuk. Mijn favoriet is “Bon Voyage Vagabond” want dit nummer bevat elk mogelijk facet van Edenbridge’s muziek en opent met een bijna psychedelische intro. Ook de gitaarsolo in “Brothers on Diamir” verdient een eervolle vermelding, want dit is één van de beste solo’s die ik de laatste tijd gehoord heb. Twee vragen stel ik mij toch. Hoe zou dit klinken met heviger en ruwere vocalen? En is het niet eens tijd dat Edenbridge iets nieuws doet? Ik houd erg veel van dit album, maar er is eigenlijk niet veel verschil met hun vorige CD’s.

As musician, you need to be good, but you also need some luck. Some bands have all the luck and others don’t. Korzus missed the big train although they could have reached the same heights as Slayer. They started around the same time and really sound very much like Slayer. The voice of Marcello Pompeu has even the same sound as Tom Araya’s, but as they started in the same era, you can hardly call Korzus a clone of Slayer. Also the international fame of Sepultura, who has put Brazil on the metalmap hasn’t helped them any further. Antônio Araújo, the new guitar player, is known as one of the best musicians of Brazil and he certainly uses his ability on this album. But although the power and dynamics of the music and the band is streaming out of your boxes, there is really nothing new under the sun. Everything on this album has been done before. I know, it must be hard to find something new after so many albums amongst so many trash metal bands, but I don’t think they even want to sound different. “2012”, “Raise Your Soul” and “Truth” are sticking out amongst the less recognizable rest of the album. And don’t forget to shout along with “Raise Your Soul”. Apparently Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) and Zoltán Farkas (from Hungarian band Ektomorf) are guesting on this album, but I haven’t found out on which tracks. Marcello has a very powerful voice which is perfectly fit for this kind of music. The solos from the drums and guitars are incredibly fast and furious. But however well this is played, you will certainly have a déjà vu, or should I say a déjà entendu. So if you are a true trash metal fan, there is nothing that keeps you from buying this and turning your amps above maximum.

Als muzikant moet je eerst en vooral goed zijn, maar je hebt ook een flinke dosis geluk nodig. Sommige groepen hebben al het geluk van de wereld en anderen zijn op dat gebied wat minder bedeeld. Korzus miste de trein van het succes, hoewel ze volgens mij even ver konden geraakt zijn als Slayer. Ze begonnen in dezelfde periode en klinken wel erg veel als Slayer. De stem van Marcello Pompeu lijkt zelfs erg veel op die van Tom Araya. Daar ze echter omzeggens gelijk begonnen zijn kan je moeilijk Korzus beschuldigen dat ze een kloon van Slayer zouden zijn. Ook de internationale bekendheid van Sepultura, die Brazilië op de heavy metal kaart heeft gezet, heeft hun niet echt geholpen. Antônio Araújo, de nieuwste gitarist, is bekend als één van de beste muzikanten van Brazilië en dat is er ook aan te horen. Hij gebruikt al zijn talent op dit album. Hoewel de power en de dynamiek van de groep en de muziek uit je boxen vloeien, is er toch niets nieuws onder de zon. Alles wat je op dit album vindt, is ooit al eens gedaan. Het kan natuurlijk niet gemakkelijk zijn om iets nieuws te vinden na zoveel albums en tussen zoveel trash metalgroepen, maar ik denk dat ze hun geluid zelfs niet willen wijzigen. “2012”, “Raise Your Soul” en “Truth” steken uit boven de minder herkenbare rest van het album. En vergeet ook niet mee te schreeuwen met “Raise Your Soul”. Blijkbaar hebben Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) en Zoltán Farkas (van de Hongaarse groep Ektomorf) een gastrol vervuld, maar ik heb niet gevonden op welke nummers dit gebeurt. Marcello heeft een zeer krachtige stem die perfect past voor dit soort muziek. De solo’s van de drum en de gitaren klinken onwaarschijnlijk vlug en heftig, maar hoe goed ze ook gespeeld worden, je zult zeker een déjà vu krijgen of is dat eerder een déjà entendu. Als je dus een trash metalfan bent in hart en nieren dan is er niks dat je nog tegenhoudt om deze plaat te kopen en je versterker maximaal open te draaien.

Bleeding Through was formed in 1999 in Orange County, California and works since their debut in 2001 on their status. They are quite successful and this is already their sixth album, without any title for a change. One can find several members of Throwdown in their ranks (some of them ex-members), for instance vocalist Brandan Schieppati. I expected a rough portion of merciless metalcore, but it’s better than that.
After a cinematic instrumental intro, Bleeding Through indeed bursts out in a bunch of hubbub with core tinges. Strangely enough the music verges to symphonic black metal sometimes. This is thanks to female keyboardist Marta, that’s why several songs have a soaring, symphonic undercurrent. If ‘Anti-Hero’ is hacking at full speed full of hate, then ‘Fifteen Minutes’ slightly reminds me of Dimmu Borgir. Who would expect something like this? We also note a sure-fire fast guitar solo. A change is gonna come. In the fifth song there are sudden clean vocals, done by bassist Ryan Wombacher. Now it’s a free-for-all with real hardcore vocals in ‘Breathing In The Wrath’, I think with regrets, but I soon have to change my mind when broad keyboard parts lead towards a real blackish part. This is done to a turn! Those hardcore lines come back one more time, but then the symphonic black metal part passes into a glissando Pink Floyd alike guitar solo. This is my favourite song, together with ‘Divide The Armies’ (again clean vocals, a slow guitar intro and drawling before cutting loose in another harsh part, plus guitar solo!) and the last song ‘Distrotion, Devotion’ with fluttering sounds going in crescendo into another outburst, again with any clean vocals). Bleeding Through has confused me, Bleeding Through has surprised me and I understand why they harvest rave reviews now.

Ze zijn behoorlijk succesvol en nu al toe aan hun zesde album, voor de verandering eens zonder titel. We vinden verschillende leden van Throwdown in hun gelederen (sommigen ex), onder andere zanger Brandan Schieppati. Ik verwachtte een bak ontiegelijke metalcore, maar het is een meevaller.
Na een filmisch instrumentaal intro, barst Bleeding Through inderdaad uit in een potje herrie met core randjes. Maar vreemd genoeg gaat het soms ook een simfonische black metal richting uit. Dat hebben we aan toetseniste Marta te danken, daardoor hebben meerdere songs een zwevende onderstroom. Is ‘Anti-Hero’ hakken op volle snelheid en vol haat, dan doet ‘Fifteen Minutes’ me verdorie lichtjes aan Dimmu Borgir denken. Wie had dat gedacht? Ook noteren we een prima snelle gitaarsolo. Het begint te keren. In het vijfde nummer is er dan plots cleane zang, op conto te schrijven van bassist Ryan Wombacher. Best goed! Het hek is van de dam met echte hardcore zang in ‘Breathing In The Wrath’, denk ik met spijt, maar ik moet al vlug mijn oordeel veranderen wanneer brede toetspartijen naar een ronduit blackish stuk leiden. Wat is dit knap gedaan. Die hardcorezin komt nog wel even terug, maar dan leidt de simfonische black metal tot een glissando Pink Floydachtige gitaarsolo. Mijn favoriete nummer, samen met ‘Divide The Armies’ (ook weer heldere zang, een traag gitaarintro en slepend alvorens raggend zijn gang te gaan, plus gitaarsolo!) en het laatste nummer ‘Distortion, Devotion’ met uitwaaierende klanken die langzaam aanzwellen tot men losbarst, ook weer even cleane zang). Bleeding Through heeft me verward, Bleeding Through heeft me verrast en ik begrijp nu waarom ze goede recensies oogsten.
