DAVID ROCK FEINSTEIN: Bitten By The Beast

David “Rock†Feinstein once founded Elf with Ronnie James Dio. The then juvenile teenagers are family: David is Dio’s nephew. Thus the man has rights to speak when he releases a tribute album for his charismatic buddy now. And there is more: on one song we can hear the unbeatable voice of Dio himself.
Feinstein has been active as musician during his whole life – also now – under different monikers. We have the band Feinstein of which I reviewed the album ’Third Wish’ in 2004, but under the name David “Rock†Feinstein, actually this happens to be the successor of ‘One Night In The Jungle’ of 2000. Ten years ago! But of course we have the band The Rods; in this constellation David has been most active (new album in 2011!).
Well, let’s focus on the album ‘Bitten By The Beast’. When you write an album with Dio in mind, it shall be slightly epic classic rock / traditional heavy metal and that’s exactly what it is. I cannot help but thinking of Deep Purple (and Rainbow) when full-blooded compositions like ‘Smoke On The Horizon’ (look at that title!) and ‘Evil In Me’ blow my speakers. It is characteristic for this album that David did vocals himself, but he often illustrates that he’s an excellent guitarist as well. His soloing is vintage-like, warm-hearted and brims with emotions. It is obvious that we are most excited and curious about “the song with Dioâ€. As we expected it is fairly mid-paced, with monumental riffs and the voice of the master makes my flesh creep. ‘Metal Will Never Die’ may sound quite banal as statement, but coming out of the mouth of Dio it sounds genuine and empyrean. We have to get used to the not so overwhelming voice of Feinstein after this for a few minutes, but nevertheless the rest of the album is highly recommended to classic rock/metal fans too. ‘Kill The Demon’ could have been a Dio track, while David must have been heavily inspired by ZZ Top when he wrote ‘Rocks Boogie’. In the long run it feels like a tribute CD to the whole metal community. ‘Give Me Mercy’ is sleazy American rock, while ‘Run For Your Life’ isn’t akin to Iron Maiden, but to Judas Priest. Even ‘Gambler Gambùer’ dives into rock history, guitar skills remind me a bit of Hendrix. Can we conclude that Feinstein has created a tribute album to 40 years of metal? It is possible, but it is also an evidence that craftsmanship is more important than trying to be so-called “originalâ€.

David “Rock†Feinstein richtte ooit met Ronnie James Dio Elf op. De toenmalige tieners zijn dan ook familie: David is Dio’s neef. De man heeft recht van spreken wanneer hij nu een album uitbrengt ter nagedachtenis van zijn charismatische buddy. Sterker nog: op één nummer horen we de grandioze stem van Dio zelf.
Feinstein is heel zijn leven en ook nu nog actief als muzikant onder allerlei namen. Er is de band Feinstein waarvan ik in 2004 nog het album ’Third Wish’ besprak, maar onder de naam David “Rock†Feinstein is dit in feite de opvolger van ‘One Night In The Jungle’ uit 2000. Maar liefst tien jaar geleden! Maar er is natuurlijk ook nog de band The Rods waar David het meest actief in is (nieuw album in 2011!).
Maar laten we het over ‘Bitten By The Beast’ hebben. Wanneer je een album schrijft met Dio in gedachten kan het niet anders of we hebben met lichtjes epische classic rock / traditionele heavy metal te maken en dat is inderdaad zo. Ik denk alsmaar aan Deep Purple (en Rainbow) wanneer volbloed composities als ‘Smoke On The Horizon’ (die titel alleen al!) en ‘Evil In Me’ door de boxen schallen. Kenmerkend voor dit album is dat David zelf zingt, maar hij laat ook veelvuldig horen dat hij een begenadigd gitarist is. Die solo’s zijn smeuïg en vol emotie. Het kan niet anders of we zijn het meest benieuwd naar “dat nummer met Dioâ€. Zoals verwacht is het vrij slepend, met zinderende riffs en de stem van de meester bezorgt me kippenvel. ‘Metal Will Never Die’ is een kreet die vrij banaal overkomt, maar uit de mond van Dio klinkt zelfs dat bevlogen en verheven. Het is daarna natuurlijk terug even wennen aan het minder volle stemgeluid van Feinstein, maar ook de rest van het album is een aanrader voor klassieke rock/metal fans. ‘Kill The Demon’ had een Dio nummer kunnen zijn, terwijl er zwaar gespiekt is bij ZZ Top toen David ‘Rocks Boogie’ schreef. Gaandeweg lijkt dit wel een tribuut cd aan de ganse metal gemeenschap, want ‘Give Me Mercy’ is typisch Amerikaanse rock, terwijl ‘Run For Your Life’ niet aan Iron Maiden, maar wel aan Judas Priest doet denken. Ook ‘Gambler Gambler’ put uit de rijke rockgeschiedenis, het gitaarwerk doet me aan Hendrix denken. Heeft Feinstein er dan maar meteen een tribuut aan 40 jaar metal van gemaakt? Mogelijk, maar het is ook wederom een bewijs dat vakmanschap belangrijker is dan de zogenaamde “originaliteitâ€.
