POISON SUN: Virtual Sin

This is a new German band with the Frank family in a star part. Hermann Frank is sufficiently famous as guitarist of Accept (and Victory and Sinner), but he is also well-known as producer. The comeback of Accept is a fact and early next year they will be touring – they play in Antwerp on 16/01/2011 – to support the magnificent ‘Blood Of The Nations’. But beside this, Hermann has also founded Poison Sun. He writes all the material, he plays the guitar and all was recorded at his Arena 20 Studios. Without any compromise, Hermann can make the music he likes with his wife. ‘Virtual Sin’ is the debut album.
Poison Sun plays “rough†rock with vintage overtones, think of AC/DC with a woman behind the microphone. Fortunately Martina is a rougher kind of vocalist, a rock chick with a powerful throat that reminds me of a metal version of Melissa Etheridge, but in songs like ‘Red Necks’ and ‘Phobia’ the term of the female Bon Scott fits as well. She has her roots in rock, blues and metal and did studio work as background vocalist for bands such as UFO, Weinhold and Jane. The ten tracks are fun, but not exceptional. The eighties still rule with Poison Sun. Of course one can perceive some Accept influences too (once they were called the German AC/DC), but this is mainly audible during the excellent guitar skills of Hermann Frank. The rhythm section – made up of Florian Schönweitz (drums) and bassist Stefan Hammer, both ex-Silent Decay members – regales us with a solid foundation for the catchy songs. The mid-paced ‘Princess’ and the beautiful ‘Forever’ (a ballad) are moments when they present themselves in a more sensitive manner. They chose to cover one song: ‘Excited’ of The Pointer Sisters is okay because it sounds so familiar, but it is only a weak copy of the original. If you have a soft spot for raucous ladies in rock like Doro or Lita Ford, you better check out Poison Sun, since it is fine non-complicated rock.

Dit is een nieuwe Duitse band met het gezin Frank in een glansrol. Hermann Frank is genoegzaam bekend als gitarist van Accept (en Victory en Sinner), maar is ook beroemd als producer. De terugkeer van Accept is een feit en begin volgend jaar toeren ze – ook bij ons in Antwerpen op 16/01/2011 – om het uitstekende ‘Blood Of The Nations’ te promoten. Daarnaast heeft Hermann echter ook Poison Sun opgericht waar hij het meeste materiaal voor schrijft, gitarist is en alles werd opgenomen in zijn eigen Arena 20 Studio. Zonder compromis kan hij zich hier met zijn vrouw uitleven in zijn favoriete muziek. ‘Virtual Sin’ is het debuutalbum.
Poison Sun maakt “ruige†rock met een vintage sausje, denk aan AC/DC met een vrouw achter de microfoon. Gelukkig is Martina van de ruwere soort, een rock chick met een fors stemgeluid dat me aan een metalversie van Melissa Etheridge doet denken, maar in nummers als ‘Red Necks’ en ‘Phobia’ gaat de term de vrouwelijke Bon Scott ook wel op. Zij heeft een basis in rock, blues en metal en deed studiowerk als achtergrondzangeres voor bands als UFO, Weinhold en Jane. De tien songs zijn leuk, maar niet ophefmakend. De jaren tachtig heersen nog bij Poison Sun. Natuurlijk hoor je er ook invloeden van Accept in (ooit noemde men hen de Duitse AC/DC) maar dit komt vooral tot uiting in het excellente gitaarspel van Hermann Frank. De ritmesectie – bestaande uit Florian Schönweitz (drums) en bassist Stefan Hammer, beiden vroeger actief in Silent Decay – biedt een degelijk fundament voor de toegankelijke songs. Het mediumtempo ‘Princess’ en het mooie ‘Forever’ (een ballad) zijn momenten waarop men wat gevoeliger uit de hoek komt. Men koos voor een cover: ‘Excited’ van The Pointer Sisters is leuk als herkenningspunt, maar een zwakke kopie van het origineel. Heb je een zwak voor ruige dames in rock zoals Doro of Lita Ford, dan moet je Poison Sun zeker ook eens onderzoeken, want het luistert lekker weg als ongecompliceerde rock.
