JEFF SCOTT SOTO: Firefest 2008 live (2CD)

Jeff Scott Soto is a vocalist who initially stood on the same top notch level as Jorn Lande. This American born dude sang on the three first records of guitar genius Yngwie Malmsteen, with Talisman he released a couple of delicious albums and later on he opted for a solo career. In the new decennium he worked with Axel Rudi Pell, Talisman and Takara. His influences are manifold, going from heavy metal to funk to AOR, disco, sound tracks for movies and rock opera. It reminds me a bit of Glenn Hughes, another great singer who’s a searching soul.
On the other hand: I don’t think that Jeff Scott Soto has lost his focus on things going by. In despite of his short time residence in Journey he got another height by being incorporated with TSO, the Savatage community that travels from East to West and back in the USA (and soon it will hit European borders!). About a year ago we could enjoy and CD and DVD, registered in Milan, Italy in 2009 with extra bonus material. Now we are faced with earlier material, namely the registration of Firefest in 2008. We all know that this is the place to be for AOR adepts and that’s why nothing can go wrong. Jeff was on tour with TSO when suddenly a message came, asking him to perform on this event.
Without too many rehearsals the band performed on stage for a huge crowd. They are doing pretty well. Loads of improvisations, it explains the large number of solo spots in which the sole musicians can free their demons. In additions many songs of ‘Beautifull Mess’ are executed. Just as his buddy Glenn Hughes, Soto goes too much into funky material, but on the other side ‘Gin & Tonic Sky’ and a proper version of Seal’s ‘Crazy’ is doing well on this registration. For the diehard fans a registration to cherish…

Jeff Scott Soto is een zanger die aanvankelijk bij mij op gelijke hoogte stond als Jorn Lande. Deze Amerikaan zong namelijk de drie eerste albums in van gitaarwonder Yngwie Malmsteen, met Talisman bracht hij een aantal welgesmaakte albums uit en later begon hij ook een solo carrière. In het nieuwe decennium werkte hij met Axel Rudi Pell, Talisman en Takara. Zijn invloeden gaan van heavy metal tot funk tot AOR, disco, soundtracks voor films en rock opera. Dat doet me dan gelijk aan Glenn Hughes denken, eveneens een fantastische zanger die soms het noorden kwijt is.
Let op: Jeff Scott Soto is het noorden niet kwijt. Ondanks zijn korte verblijf bij Journey heeft hij zich goed herpakt door een vaste stek bij TSO te scoren, het rondreizend Savatage gebeuren in oost en west Amerika (en binnenkort ook in Europa). Ongeveer een jaar geleden konden we genieten van een cd en dvd, opgenomen in Milaan in 2009 met extra bonus materiaal. Nu komt plots een vroegere registratie uit, namelijk eentje van het Firefest in 2008. Nu weten we allemaal dat dit “the place to be†is voor de reguliere AOR/melodic rock fan en er kan dan ook weinig mis gaan. Jeff was op tournee met TSO toen hij plots een bericht kreeg met de vraag om hier aanwezig te zijn. Zonder veel oefenen trad de band aan op het podium voor een immense massa. Zij brengen het er nog goed vanaf. Veel improvisatie, dat verklaart het aantal solo spots waarin de instrumentalisten hun gang kunnen gaan en verder veel songs van ‘Beautiful Mess’. Net als Glenn Hughes gaat Soto soms teveel de funky soul tour op, maar daar staan songs als ‘Gin & Tonic Sky’ en toch wel een goede versie van Seal’s ‘Crazy’ tegenover. Voor de diehard fans een nieuw document om te omhelzen…
