ANIMATIONS: Reset Your Soul

Initially infamous for its excellent extreme metal scene with Behemoth and Vader on top, Poland has gone through a development of magnificent progressive bands as well – Riverside as the ultimate example. Of course, we cannot ignore Quidam, Votum and SBB but the upward spiral is still going on. It is proven by Animations, a five-piece collective hailing from Jaworzno, creating music in the best tradition of Dream Theater, Riverside and Fates Warning.
Their self-titled debut was released in 2007 and it appeared to be an instrumental assault on the progressive metal world. Even without any support of a label, they sold 2000 copies. Their name was established in Poland! In 2009 the quartet engaged a vocalist and together with Darek Bartosiewicz they started working at new material for a sophomore record. They contacted producer Tommy Hansen and at the Jailhouse Studios (Helloween, TNT, Jorn Lande) everything was fine-tuned. One year ago ‘Reset Your Soul’ was launched at the Polish market, but fortunately we can have our first encounter with this vortex, amazing album of this Polish band as well. In Autumn 2010 they signed a deal with Fantom Media and even if this is released on their own Sonic Maze Records, it deserves all of our attention.
Animations showcase a huge maturity on ‘Reset Your Soul’. Wild and overwhelming Dream Theater progressive metal with vortex dynamics smoothly flows into contemplative fragments with great powerful and yet deep-draught vocals. The band itself is quite heavy with some jazzy escapes and Yes-alike excels on guitar; but vocals bring in a factor of peacefulness and make you breathe. In their lengthy compositions – going from seven till thirteen minutes – they use many turns and switches to build up a wonderful tension and they succeed in that in an impressive manner. Guitarist Kuba Debski and keyboardist Tomek are giants in having eclectic duels, while hectic excels always lead to more contemplative parts. ‘The Manhattan Project’ and ‘1989’ are still witnesses of their instrumental past, but vocalist Darek really adds a proper emotive factor and depth to the songs. His clean vocal prestige reminds me more than once to eminent singers like Ray Alder and James LaBrie. But the main impression caused by this surprising newcomer in our areas is that they reminded me of Redemption, exactly one year ago they surprised me in a positive way as well. Animations deserve a spot on ProgPower as the next Polish band to discover! Upcoming top notch class!

Aanvankelijk bekend voor zijn uitstekende death metal scène met Behemoth en Vader op kop, wist Polen zich – vooral door Riverside – de laatste jaren te ontwikkelen als interessante leverancier van fantastische progressieve rock bands. Natuurlijk, Quidam, Votum en SBB laten wij niet na te vermelden, maar de opwaartse tendens is nog steeds gaande. Dat bewijst Animations, een vijfkoppig gezelschap uit Jaworzno dat muziek maakt in de beste traditie van Dream Theater, Riverside en Fates Warning.

Hun naam in Polen was gemaakt. In 2009 engageerde het viertal een zanger en samen met Darek Bartosiewicz begon men te werken aan materiaal voor een tweede album. Men contacteerde producer Tommy Hansen en in de Jailhouse Studios (Helloween, TNT, Jorn Lande) werd alles geperfectioneerd. Een jaar geleden werd ‘Reset Your Soul’ al uitgebracht op de Poolse markt, maar gelukkig kunnen we nu ook kennismaken met dit wervelende, fantastische album van een Poolse band. In de herfst van 2010 tekende men namelijk een deal met Fantom Media en ook al is dit uitgebracht op het eigen Sonic Maze Records, het is onze aandacht dubbel en dik waard.
Animations toont een grote volwassenheid op ‘Reset Your Soul’. Wilde Dream Theater prog metal met wervelende dynamiek wordt afgewisseld met beschouwende stukken. De band speelt behoorlijk heftig, soms plots onderbroken door een jazzy loopje of een Yes-achtig ornament, maar de zang biedt houvast en laat je even op adem komen om de beschouwelijke teksten te laten doordringen. In de lange songs – gaande van zeven tot dertien minuten – gebruikt men tal van wendingen om spanning te creëren en dat lukt hen op een overweldigende wijze. Gitarist Kuba Debski en toetsenist Tomek zijn krakken in het opbouwen van een schitterend duel, terwijl hectische stukken steeds leiden tot momenten van contemplatieve rust. ‘The Manhattan Project’ en ‘1989’ getuigen nog van het instrumentale verleden, maar zanger Darek voegt in de andere songs toch de nodige emotionele factor en diepgang toe. Zijn heldere vocalen doen me denken aan Ray Alder en James LaBrie. Maar de indruk die deze cd vooral op me achterliet is te vergelijken met het debuut van Redemption, op de kop af één jaar geleden. Zij verdienen een plaats op ProgPower als volgende Poolse band! Top klasse in ontplooiing!
