AYREON: The Theory Of Everything

For some considerable time we thought that Ayreon happened to be full circle. With ‘Epilogue: The Memory Remains’ on the ultimate box set ‘Timeline’ the story was winded up. On top of that mastermind Arjen Lucassen focused the next years on albums with Guilt Machine, Star One and his solo album. However, late 2012 something happened that no one could predict. In solitude Arjen started to put the tacks for a sequel under the moniker Ayreon. The story had to be simpler, the cast impressive yet not over the top or extravagant and a fresh air flew through the studio project Ayreon. One year later we can enjoy the enchanting double album ‘The Theory Of Everything’. It is made up of four mammoth compositions where the bits and pieces (yet they all have a title) needlessly flow into each other, that’s why this rock opera tends to be an agreeable listening experience. Seven vocalists are present; they all have a role in the play. Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) is the main vocalist who rules the roast, but contributions of JB (Grand Magus), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot) and John Wetton (Asia, Uriah Heep) are essential as well in the storyline. They are all swept away by the eclectic story and thus they are doing an amazing job.
Concerning the guest musicians we take a trip down memory lane to Arjen’s youth. Icons that reigned the musical world at that time in Yes (Rick Wakeman), Genesis (Steve Hackett) and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Keith Emerson) have put a distinctive mark on this musical experience. In the end guitar skills (even done by Hackett) are less prominent than keyboards wizardry (Wakeman and Emerson). Just add Jordan Rudess (also keyboards), of phenomenal Dream Theater fame, to it and we are secured of a musical journey that appears to be more prog-like than before. Indeed, ‘The Theory Of Everything’ is made up of four vinyl filling compositions and consequently it invokes comparisons with ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ from Yes. In this respect, going deeper into songs and all these kinds of bits and pieces would lead to a “not done†option. In the meantime fans of Ayreon know enough: it is a mind-blowing experience again and it invites you to endless listens. When doing that, the story will get a hold of you. A scientist, always looking for proper theories, will finally give pharmaceutics to his son to achieve his final purpose. It is a kind of metaphor for asking yourself: how far can we go in doing things to reach what we were looking for? It is a question worth asking to all “leaders†of our planet earth, isn’t it?

Geruime tijd dachten we dat de cirkel rond was bij Ayreon. Met ‘Epilogue: The Memory Remains’ op de ultieme boxset ‘Timeline’ werd het verhaal immers afgerond. Bovendien bracht meesterbrein Arjen Lucassen de volgende jaren albums uit met Guilt Machine, Star One en onder zijn eigen naam als soloartiest. Eind 2012 gebeurde er echter iets dat niemand voorzien had. In alle stilte begon Arjen de bakens uit te zetten voor een vervolg onder de naam Ayreon. Het verhaal moest simpeler zijn, de cast indrukwekkend maar niet extravagant en een frisse wind woei doorheen het studioproject Ayreon. Een jaar later kunnen we het lijvige dubbelalbum ‘The Theory Of Everything’ gaan smaken. Het bestaat uit vier mammoetcomposities waarvan de kleine stukjes (die trouwens allemaal een titel hebben) naadloos in elkaar overvloeien, zodat deze rockopera in één ruk aangenaam weg luistert. Zeven vocalisten nemen de honneurs waar, allen krijgen zij een rol toebedeeld. Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) trekt de kar, maar de bijdragen van JB (Grand Magus), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot) en John Wetton (Asia, Uriah Heep) zijn eveneens essentieel in het verhaal. Zij worden allen meegesleept door het verhaal en leveren een uitmuntende prestatie.
Bij de gastmuzikanten gaan we terug naar Arjen’s jeugd. Iconen die toen zegevierden in Yes (Rick Wakeman), Genesis (Steve Hackett) en Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Keith Emerson) hebben hun stempel gedrukt op de muzikale invulling, zodat uiteindelijk het gitaarwerk (ondanks Hackett) de mindere wordt van de toetsencapriolen (Wakeman en Emerson). Voeg daar nog Jordan Rudess (ook toetsen) van het fenomenale Dream Theater bij en we zitten gebeiteld voor een muzikale belevenis die meer prog-gericht is dan voorheen. Het feit dat ‘The Theory Of Everything’ bestaat uit vier vinyl vullende composities roept trouwens de vergelijking op met ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ van Yes. In deze optiek is de songs ontleden om in te gaan op muzikale details een “not done†optie. Fans van Ayreon weten bij deze voldoende: het is een muzikale trip die zijn gelijke niet kent en uitnodigt tot meerdere luisterbeurten waarbij het verhaal van een wetenschapper die onafgebroken op zoek is naar sluitende theorieën uiteindelijk zijn zoon farmaceutische substanties zal toedienen om zijn doel te bereiken. Een metafoor om de vraag te stellen: hoever kunnen we gaan in onze opzet om een doel te bereiken? Een vraag die we aan de “leiders†van onze planeet aarde misschien eens kunnen voorleggen…
