MENTAL CIRCUS: Mental Circus

Mental Circus is a quartet with a classic line-up of vocals, guitar, bass and drums but they got some help from extra musicians and one of them is Tom S. Englund of Evergrey fame! This mini concept album consists of eight songs that are connected and form an epic cycle with a lot of musical variation. The atmosphere of the record is also well supported by the nice artwork. ‘Lethal Family’ is a heavy metal song followed by ‘Pierrot’ which is a beautiful piano ballad. The next song ‘More To You’ makes it clear again that this is a real metal band. ‘Triggers And Cues’ has Rosario Ieracitano (of Keyrah) as guest singer and develops in a neo-classical way. ‘Counting Heads’ sounds like something out of the Bertolt Brecht songbook and next is a very appealing rockballad with Tom S. Englund called ‘Shards Of You’. ‘Remember Me’ ends the cycle in a dark mood with a firm metal arrangement. Overall, singer Sanne Marico has a good rock voice and carries the songs all the way through. Every song is so different, but still, the whole record sounds like a unity. The CD has one bonus track called ‘Into The Depths Of Night’ and proves that Mental Circus is a real metal act. Watch this band!

Mental Circus is een kwartet met een klassieke bezetting: zang, gitaar, bas en drums. In de studio hebben ze echter ook nog beroep kunnen doen op enkele gastrollen, o.a. van Tom S. Englund (Evergrey). Het mini concept telt acht nummers die samen een epische cyclus vormen en muzikaal erg gevarieerd klinken. De sfeer van de plaat wordt trouwens heel mooi ondersteund door het originele artwork. ‘Lethal Empathy’ is een stevige metal song, terwijl ‘Pierrot’ een prachtige, enkel door piano begeleide ballade is die ons doet denken aan het Nederlandse Krezip. ‘More To You’ laat dan weer niets aan de verbeelding over wat het metalkarakter van de band betreft. ‘Triggers And Cues’ heeft met gastzangeres Rosario Ieracitano (van Keyrah) een neoklassiek karakter en ‘Counting Heads’ is een song die uit het liedboek van Bertolt Brecht zou kunnen komen. Op ‘Shards Of You’ horen we Tom S. Englund in een meeslepende rockballade en afsluiter ‘Remember Me’ is een donkere sfeersong met en stevig metalarrangement. Zangeres Sanne Marico draagt de nummers met een bekwame rockstem. De kracht van deze cd is dat elk nummer zo verschillend is en toch vormt alles samen een mooi geheel en loopt er een rode draad door. De cross-over tussen pop, metal en progrock is bijzonder geslaagd. Dankzij bonustrack ‘Into The Depths Of Night’ (een knallende rocker) klokt de cd af op net geen half uur. Mental Circus is beslist een band om in het oog te houden.
