Saxon is one of the big three of NWOBHM and just like Maiden and Leppard they are still soldering on the stages of the world. The second part of the Chronicles gives us a good insight of how the band functions. On DVD 1 we get the live show they did in Wales at the Warrior Of The Road Festival. It was the first time in a very long time that the band played as a headliner at a UK festival and they had their famous eagle on stage. The tracks are interrupted by very interesting and informative interviews with all the band members. For those who are only interested in the music, there’s the same show on a bonus CD, without the interruptions. Biff is not in his best form that night, but that doesn’t prevent the fans from enjoying the show.
DVD 2 brings three full shows of different length. The longest and the best is the set Saxon played at the 2012 Wacken Open Air Festival. They played a much shorter set at the Download Festival in 2012 and they had a 70 minute slot on the main stage at Graspop 2013. The sound on the Wacken show is very good and the Download set is really ballsy and energetic, unfortunately that can’t be said of the Graspop recording which is added as a bonus. The sound on that one is thinner and has a lot of midrange and some distorted cymbals. But still, this will be a fine souvenir for those who were there. After all these are mixed soundboard recordings and show a band in its pure form. This is a really value for money package and these guys still cut the cake!

Saxon is één van de grote drie van de NWOBHM en net zoals Maiden en Leppard maken ze nog steeds de podia over de hele wereld onveilig. Het tweede deel van de Chronicles geeft ons behalve veel live muziek ook een mooi inzicht over hoe de band in elkaar zit en wie de verschillende persoonlijkheden zijn. Op de eerste dvd staat een live show die ze deden in Wales. Het regende pijpenstelen en Biff was duidelijk vocaal niet in zijn beste doen, maar dat belette niemand om er met volle teugen van te genieten. De nummers worden onderbroken door individuele, interessante en informatieve interviews met de bandleden waardoor ook de minder bekende bandleden een gezicht krijgen. Wie de muziek van deze show continu wil horen wordt bediend met een bonus cd waar het optreden zonder onderbrekingen op staat.
Dvd 2 biedt drie live sets op verschillende festivals. De langste werd opgenomen tijdens het Wacken Open Air Festival van 2012. Ook het geluid is hier duidelijk het beste. De kortste set is die van het Download Festival in 2012, maar die bruist wel van energie. Als bonus staat er ook nog de set op van Graspop in 2013. Leuk, maar jammer genoeg de minste geluidskwaliteit. Het zal de aanwezigen echter toch voorzien van een mooi souvenir. Saxon is nog steeds een top live band en dit pakket is duidelijk de investering waard!
