KLIMT 1918: Sentimentale Jugend

Klimt 1918 has been around since 1999 and at that very moment the band was founded by the Italian brothers Marco (vocals, guitars) and Paolo (drums) Soellner to put their love for The Cure, Bauhaus and Joy Division into own compositions. In all these years, they only released three albums, but the line-up has been pretty consistent: only two line-up changes occurred. It has been since 2008 that the predecessor ’Just In Case We’ll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation)’ was launched at the world, but on the other hand ‘Sentimentale Jugend’ happens to be a double album with almost two hours of music.
This time the refined Italians have found inspiration in Berlin in the seventies and eighties, when Bowie resided in the metropolis for inspiration and the book and movie ‘Christiane F – Kinder Von Bahnhof Zoo’ turned into a huge success. Another influence is the movie ‘The Lives Of Others’ to catch the wintery, foggy atmosphere of East Berlin at that time. Thus the music is really hazy and misty, with loads of fluttering sounds. Klimt 1918 still shows any affinity with new wave, indie and alternative rock, but nowadays they are mostly a possible favourite for the crowds that have a liking for postrock and shoegaze. Think of a cultivated version of Alcest on ‘Shelter’ and also of bands such as Mercury Rev and Starsailor. The vocals of Marco Soellner are a bit drawling and sleek; in the end it starts to be a bit monotonous. Just like the music: it is all beautiful and soaring, but the songs does not differ so much from each other, even though the band makes a prompt division between ‘Sentimentale’ and ‘Jugend’. On the first disc one can find the dreamy, slow and long compositions, on the second disc the tracks are shorter and faster. It must be a matter of details, since ‘Jugend’ also includes lengthy songs and except for ‘Juvenile’ (with pumping new wave bass) the pace seldom gets faster. It is beautiful, peaceful music to listen to with eyes closed, but you will wait in vain for proper tension or action. Even if – according to the band’s statement – they have used guitar effects and drum rhythms from the fifties and sixties for the first time. Klimt 1918 bestaat al sinds 1999 en toen werd de band opgericht door de Italiaanse gebroeders Marco (zang, gitaar) en Paolo (drums) Soellner om hun liefde voor The Cure, Bauhaus en Joy Division in eigen composities te gieten. In die tijd brachten ze slechts drie albums uit, maar de bezetting is opvallend consistent gebleven: in al die jaren slechts twee wisselingen. Het is alweer sinds 2008 geleden dat voorganger ’Just In Case We’ll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation)’ uitkwam, maar daar staat tegenover dat ‘Sentimentale Jugend’ een dubbelaar is met bijna twee uur muziek.
Ditmaal hebben de verfijnde Italianen zich laten inspireren door het Berlin uit de jaren zeventig en tachtig, toen Bowie naar de metropool trok voor inspiratie en het boek en de film ‘Christiane F – Kinder Von Bahnhof Zoo’ een groot succes werden. Een andere invloed is de film ‘The Lives Of Others’ om de winterse, mistige sfeer in Oost Berlijn te vangen in muziek. Deze muziek is dan ook mistig en wazig, met veel uitwaaierende klanken. Klimt 1918 vertoont nog wel affiniteit met new wave, indie en alternatieve rock, maar klinkt heden ten dage toch vooral als een mogelijke favoriet voor het leger liefhebbers van postrock en shoegaze. Ik denk dan aan een gecultiveerde versie van Alcest op ‘Shelter’ en ook aan bands als Mercury Rev en Starsailor. De zang van Marco Soellner is een beetje lijzig en egaal, wat na verloop van tijd wel wat eentonig gaat worden. Net als de muziek trouwens: allemaal mooi en zwevend, maar de songs gaan wel op elkaar lijken, zelfs al maakt de band zelf het volgende onderscheid tussen ‘Sentimentale’ en ‘Jugend’. Op de eerste schijf staan de dromerige, lange, trage composities, op de tweede schijf kortere tracks met meer pit. Dat zit ‘m dan in details, want ook ‘Jugend’ bevat lange songs en buiten het met pompende bas vertolkte ‘Juvenile’ gaat het tempo amper de hoogte in. Het is mooie muziek om met gesloten ogen op weg te dromen, maar op echte spanningsbogen ga je tevergeefs wachten, zelfs al heeft de band voor het eerst gitaareffecten en drumritmes uit de jaren vijftig en zestig aangewend volgens eigen zeggen. De albums zijn naar keuze apart of samen verkrijgbaar en natuurlijk bestaat er ook een prachtige mediabook uitgave, zoals we van Prophecy Productions gewend zijn.
