LORD OF THE LOST: Swan Songs II

Symphonic influences in metal are no novelty. Just think about top notch bands like Dimmu Borgir, Septicflesh and Nightwish who use them in exuberant way with huge success. Actually these days cannot listen to a – quite extreme – metal band without these additions of violins and more. Sometimes this happens to be a nice addition, many times guitars are totally snowed under. With Lord Of The Lost one can even hardly speak of guitars. This is a heartfelt calm record with the melancholic voice of mastermind Chris Harms. His contemplative lyrics are surrounded by broad symphonic layers. It is an ultimate genuine plea, without ever having affinity with metal. Thus he goes just one step further than the regular metal band that added any layers. It seems that there is an audience for this, since live concerts are planned in the UK and the US. Probably for aficionados of Trans Siberian Orchestra. It is nice for a moment, but in the end just like the last track mentions: ‘Fall Asleep’.

Symfonische invloeden in metal zijn geen nieuwigheid. Denken we maar even aan topbands als Dimmu Borgir, Septicflesh en Nightwish die deze op exuberante manier met groot succes toepassen. Sterker nog, je kan heden ten dage amper een – vrij extreme – metalband beluisteren of daar duiken de viooltjes en dergelijke weer op. Soms is dit een mooie toevoeging, veelal worden de gitaren totaal ondergesneeuwd. Bij Lord Of The Lost is er zelfs amper sprake van gitaren. Dit is een warmhartige luisterplaat met de melancholieke stem van mastermind Chris Harms. Zijn beschouwende teksten worden omzwachteld door brede symfonische lagen. Het is een uitermate integer pleidooi, waar echter geen metal aan te pas komt. Hij gaat dus verder dan de reguliere metalband welke enkele laagjes toevoegt en hij komt er nog mee weg ook want concerten in het VK en de VS staan gepland. Waarschijnlijk voor liefhebbers van Trans Siberian Orchestra. In beperkte mate mooi, maar uiteindelijk zoals de laatste track meldt: ‘Fall Asleep’.
