NOCTURNAL RITES: Phoenix

The Swedish Nocturnal Rites released their previous album ‘The 8th Sin’ in 2007. In 2012 guitarist Chris chose to enlist with Sabaton and it was only the recruiting of new talent Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry) that gave them the necessary incentive to start back recording their melodic metal brand.
‘Black As Coal’ is a melodic opener, with an aggressive touch due to the metal core-ish edge added by guitar, and a catchy chorus. ‘Waste’ is more melodic, less venomous, while ‘Poisonous’ combines aggression with a technical, prog edge and contains some tremendous guitar and, I almost forgot, the delicious versatile voice of Lindqvist. ‘Repent’ is rather in a restrained power vein, while ‘Killing’ is dark power with kind of an industrial touch. ‘Song’ is dark again, but more melodic, has a catchy hook and contains a sombre break with drums, after which ‘Ghost’ is rawer, faster, more aggressive with generous soloing. Catchy ‘Break Me’ as well has something industrial and ‘Flames’ is a quiet haven with a break where guitar and keyboard speak softly before entering the grand finale. ‘God’ is a fast, raw bite as bonus and Rites kept another faster slab, with catchy vocal lines and damn great guitar, for closing.
Great heavy melodic album with tight virtuoso guitar!

Het Zweedse Nocturnal Rites bracht hun vorig album ‘The 8th Sin’ uit in 2007. In 2012 stapte gitarist Chris over naar Sabaton en het was pas de inlijving van nieuw talent Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry) dat de nodige impuls gaf om er weer tegen hun melodieuze metal aan te gaan.
‘Black As Coal’ is een melodieuze opener, met agressieve toets door de metal core-achtige gitaar, en catchy refrein. ‘Waste’ is melodieuzer, minder venijnig, terwijl ‘Poisonous’ agressie met een technische, prog toets combineert en flitsend gitaarwerk bevat en, niet te vergeten, de heerlijk wendbare stem van Lindqvist. ‘Repent gaat eerder de rustiger power toer op, terwijl ‘Killing’ duistere power is met een soort industrial toets. ‘Song’ is weer donker, maar melodieuzer, heeft een catchy hook en bevat een sombere break met drums, waarna ‘Ghost’ rauwer, sneller, agressiever is met royale solo. Ook het catchy ‘Break Me’ heeft iets industrial en ‘Flames’ is een rustpunt, met een break waarin keyboard en gitaar zachtjes mompelen vooraleer de aanzwellende finale in te zetten. ‘God’ is een snelle, rauwe hap als bonus en Rites hield nog een snellere brok, met catchy zanglijnen en verdomd straffe gitaar, om af te sluiten
