GRAVE PLEASURES: Motherblood

Initially there was Beastmilk, later Grave Pleasures came into being and their debut album ‘Dreamcrach’ was released in 2015. After some line-up changes the band reinvigorated and they deliver a firm new wave/post punk album now with ‘Motherblood’. One can find members of Beastmilk, Hexvessel (the British vocalist Mat McNerney) and Oranssi Pazuzu (guitarist Juha Vanhanen) in their ranks and they really continue the tradition of Finland as excellent gothic rock country on the map, in this case more akin to the eighties style from bands such as The Cure, The Sound and Joy Division as main inspirations.
While writing this, ‘Motherblood’ already happens to be a kind of chartbuster in Germany and these days the band plays their first concerts for the new album over there. The ‘death rock’ of the five-piece (amongst them four Finns from Helsinki) is easygoing ear-candy and mostly danceable, but lyric-wise it really has a macabre, pitch black tinge. Flirting with the death and the Apocalypse are main features in their lyrics and it invokes a kind of Cold War atmosphere of the eighties (although this topic is quite current as well). They kick off with two up-tempo catchy songs, called ‘Infatuation Overkill’ and ‘Doomsday Rainbows’, while ‘Be My Hiroshima’ reminds us a bit of the really underestimated Pyogenesis. Sisters Of Mercy fans will surely enjoy the low-ranged vocals of Mat and the fluttering, sharp-tuned guitar ornaments typical for new wave (think of The Cure and U2). Tight bass and drum patterns feature songs like ‘Mind Intruder’ and ‘Deadenders’. The highlight of morbid decadency happens to be ‘Atomic Christ’ in which David Tibet of Current 93 does a preaching kind of monologue at the beginning before this conjuring song turns into a captivating cadency. Ultimately in contrast with the catchy up-tempo songs, they dive deep into an apocalyptic plea while dancing on the abyss of existence and the pitch black ‘Haunted Afterlife’ is a nice example of that. ‘Motherblood’ appears to be a new wave record of current times, very intriguing in its genre.

Na enkele bezettingswijzigingen heeft de band zich herpakt en levert met ‘Motherblood’ een potig new wave/post punk album af. We vinden leden van Beastmilk, Hexvessel (de Britse zanger Mat McNerney) en Oranssi Pazuzu (gitarist Juha Vanhanen) in hun rangen en ze zetten de traditie van Finland als uitstekend gothic rock land verder op de kaart, zij het meer in jaren tachtig stijl met The Cure, The Sound en Joy Division als grote voorbeelden.
Terwijl we dit schrijven is ‘Motherblood’ al een hit in Duitsland en speelt de band de eerste concerten voor dit nieuwe album. De ‘death rock’ van het vijftal (waaronder vier Finnen uit Helsinki) ligt aangenaam in het gehoor, is meestal dansbaar, maar heeft tekstueel een gitzwart, macaber randje. Flirten met de dood en de Apocalyps staan centraal in de teksten en dit roept een Koude Oorlog sfeer van de jaren tachtig op (al is dit thema ook bijzonder hedendaags). Men trapt af men twee uptempo vlotte songs in de vorm van ‘Infatuation Overkill’ en ‘Doomsday Rainbows’, terwijl ‘Be My Hiroshima’ ook wel wat aan het schromelijk ondergewaardeerde Pyogenesis doet denken. Sisters Of Mercy fans zullen zich zeker vinden in de lage zang van Mat en de uitwaaierende, gierende gitaren die zo eigen zijn aan new wave (met The Cure en U2 op kop). Strakke bas- en drumpatronen beheersen songs als ‘Mind Intruder’ en ‘Deadenders’. Het toppunt van morbide decadentie is echter ‘Atomic Christ’ waarin David Tibet van Current 93 een preek opvoert vooraleer het bezwerende nummer zich ontplooit in een beklijvende cadans. Schril in contrast met de vlotte uptempo songs, gaat men diep in een apocalyptisch pleidooi om te dansen op de afgrond van het bestaan en daar is het gitzwarte ‘Haunted Afterlife’ een mooi voorbeeld van. ‘Motherblood’ is een new wave plaat van deze tijd, bijzonder intrigerend in het genre.
