DANIEL CAVANAGH: Monochrome

The remarkable musical evolution of Anathema throughout the years might be common knowledge. The band managed to appeal to a completely ‘renewed’ audience and these are even taller in numbers than before. However, even around the turn of the centuries, guitarist Daniel Cavanagh used to have a very versatile musical taste. For instance Nick Drake was one of his heroes. Years later his first solo album ‘Monochrome’ is finally out. And it properly sketches the reflective side of Cavanagh’s personality.
Of course there are similarities with the current sound of Anathema and that is already obvious in the contemplative ‘The Exorcist’ which offers us introspective beauty. The singer-songwriter in Daniel is featured on this album. Very sophisticated, while Anneke van Giersbergen sings some parts in ‘This Music’. She can be heard in three songs. It leaps to the eye that Daniel mainly outs his emotions on piano. Guitars are absent or in the back, the acoustic ‘Dawn’ as exception. Thus no captivating howling guitar solos and that’s a bit of a pity. On the other hand we have experimental escapades of atmospheric flying soundscapes in the eight minutes long ‘The Silent Flight Of The Raven Winged Hours’ which is very ethereal, but it also includes ambient influences that remind us of the first albums of Antimatter. Again the last track ‘Some Dreams Come True’ is a freewheeling collection of sounds with piano and violin with many repetitive patterns. Anna Phoebe adds beautiful violin lines in some of the songs. ‘Monochrome’ is not a surprise to me and Daniel is very recognizable, but be aware of the fact that it is a very calm record.

De opmerkelijke muzikale evolutie van Anathema doorheen de jaren behoeft geen nadere uitleg meer. De band is erin geslaagd om een totaal ‘vernieuwd’ publiek aan te spreken en die zijn zelfs talrijker dan vroeger. Echter, rond de eeuwwisseling was gitarist Daniel Cavanagh ook al fan van de meest uiteenlopende muziek en o.a. Nick Drake was één van zijn helden. Jaren later is zijn eerste soloalbum ‘Monochrome’ eindelijk een feit. En het schetst heel mooi de reflectieve kant van Cavanagh’s persoonlijkheid.
Uiteraard zijn er overeenkomsten met de huidige sound van Anathema en dat is al duidelijk merkbaar in het beschouwende ‘The Exorcist’ dat ingetogen schoonheid etaleert. De singer-songwriter in Daniel komt hier veel aan bod. Heel gesofistikeerd, terwijl Anneke van Giersbergen meezingt in ‘This Music’. Ze is te horen in drie songs. Het is opvallend dat Daniel zijn gevoelens vooral uit op piano en de gitaar – een akoestische uitzondering als ‘Dawn’ even daargelaten – aan de kant laat staan. Geen bloedmooie, huilende gitaarsolo’s dus en dat vind ik ergens wel spijtig. Wel experimentele escapades van atmosferische zweverigheid in het acht minuten durende ‘The Silent Flight Of The Raven Winged Hours’ dat erg etherisch is, maar ook ambient invloeden vertoont en zelfs aan de eerste albums van Antimatter doet denken. Ook de afsluiter ‘Some Dreams Come True’ is een vrijblijvende klankencollectie met piano en viool en veel repetitieve patronen. Anna Phoebe legt in sommige tracks mooie accenten op viool. ‘Monochrome’ verrast me niet en Daniel is heel herkenbaar, maar het is wel een zeer kalme plaat.
