NIGHT LEGION: I

The eponymous debut of Night Legion was recorded by four musicians having gained experience in different Australian bands.
The fast ‘Into The Light’ opens this album with thundering drums and impressive shrieks. The catchy title track is more restrained with singer Vo making a more diverse use of his voice than in previous one, after which ‘Storm’, with strong bass in the intro, harbours slow pieces as well as fast passages and a solo from Stu. ‘Warrior’ shows a sparkling intro with slight oriental touch, shredding guitar, drum driven, but the rest of the song is – in comparison - a bit disappointing. ‘This Time’ is a bit too melodic, too moderate and too long, but things will get better… Indeed the slight epic ‘Hell Below’ is a raw and fast paced shot in a bull’s eye, including a gorgeous break with guitar galore, and ‘Hydra’ gallops from the starting blocks before slowing down to a head banging feast. ‘Scorch’ is raw and fast again with an impressive Vo and matching guitar. Spoken word opens the long ‘Titan’ that, at first, plods rocking along, slowly gets epical and adds in its midst some phenomenal guitars (see guest musicians) before rushing to the finale.
Some damned good songs combined with world class vocals and great guitar, but not very memorable on the whole.

Het gelijknamig debuut van Night Legion werd ingeblikt door vier muzikanten die ervaring opdeden in diverse Australische bands.
Het snelle ‘Into The Light’ opent deze schijf met donderende drums en indrukwekkende schreeuwen. Het catchy titelnummer is bezadigder met zanger Vo die zijn stem meer diverse gebruikt dan in het vorige, waarna ‘Storm’, met sterke bas lijn in de intro, zowel tragere stukken als snelle passages herbergt én een solo van Stu. ‘Warrior’ kent een spetterende intro met licht oosterse inslag, vingervlugge gitaar, stuwende drums, maar de rest van het nummer is – in vergelijking - een beetje teleurstellend. ‘This Time’ is iets te melodieus, te braaf en te lang, maar het tij zal keren… Het licht epische ‘Hell Below’ is immers een ruig en snel schot in de roos, inclusief prachtige break met royale solo, en ‘Hydra’ galoppeerd uit de startblokken alvorens te vertragen tot een headbangend feest. ‘Scorch’ is weer rauw en snel met een indrukwekkende Vo én even sterke gitaar. Spoken word opent het lange ‘Titan’ dat, aanvankelijk, vrijblijvend rockt, stilaan epische trekken krijgt en halverwege wat fenomenale gitaren toevoegt (zie gast muzikanten), vooraleer naar de finale toe te werken.
Enkele verdomd lekkere nummers met stem van wereldklasse en ferme gitaar, maar globaal genomen niet erg opmerkelijk.
