SLOWMOTION APOCALYPSE: Obsidian

‘Obsidian’ is the second album of an Italian band with a springy, energetic sound. We are dealing with pretty fast-paced melodic death metal in Swedish style and that is when I always become quite excited about the flamy riffs, mauling rhythm section and scream-like vocals in good old At The Gates tradition; but those who have a liking for bands like Dark Tranquillity or Killswitch Engage will surely love this as well.
Slowmotion Apocalypse plays in the current line-up since 2002 (made up of members from Slapsticks and To Die For) and they sure are a good oiled tight unit. This album was recorded at Studio 73 by Riccardo Pasini (he has worked with Ephel Duath for instance) and at the dB Studio with Ettore Rigotti. The latter was also the man in charge for production – which is ultra chunky and yet clear – and the mix. All songs have a proper speed, vocalist Alberto Zannier screams his lungs out of his body and I grandly enjoy these lashings of melodic guitar solos, constantly meandering in between the unrelenting maul-work of the rhythm section. A huge compliment goes to both guitar players Ivan Odorico and Nicola Milanese! The album features guest vocals of the highly respected Tomas Lindberg of At The Gates fame, but also Gianluca “GL†Perotti (ex-Extrema) and Claudio Ravinale of the fantastic Disarmoni Mundi came to join the brutal voice orgy.
All songs are engrossing and heavy, but my favourite one is the nearly plump ‘Burial’, this reminds me pretty much of Amon Amarth, more precisely of ‘Victorious March’. Riffs are as fiery and transparent as those of the mighty Swedish Vikings and the song has very marvellous soloing again. In ‘The Way You Want To Die’, the dark spoken fragment and furious guitar solo leaps to the eye. A grandiose and wild cover of the Iron Maiden song ‘Be Quick Or Be Dead’ occludes this very fine melodic death metal album in a beautiful way.

‘Obsidian’ is het tweede album van een Italiaanse band met een sprankelend, energiek geluid. Het betreft hier flink voortjagende melodieuze death metal naar Zweeds model en dan raak ik steeds laaiend enthousiast over de vlammende riffing, beukende ritmesectie en schreeuwerige vocalen naar good old At The Gates model, maar wie van Dark Tranquillity houdt of van Killswitch Engage zal hier ook best van genieten.
Slowmotion Apocalypse speelt in deze bezetting sinds 2002 (bestaande uit leden van Slapsticks en To Die For) en je krijgt er geen speld tussen. Die man stond ook in voor de productie – die megavet en toch helder is – en de mix. Alle nummers houden er een flinke vaart in, zanger Alberto Zannier brult zich de longen uit het lijf en ik geniet van de melodieuze gitaarsolo’s die zich constant slingeren tussen het onvermoeibare beukwerk van de ritmesectie. Een dikke pluim voor de gitaristen Ivan Odorico en Nicola Milanese! Het album bevat ook nog gastvocalen van de bekende Tomas Lindberg, die we allemaal kennen van At The Gates vroeger, maar ook Gianluca “GL†Perotti (ex-Extrema) en Claudio Ravinale van het al even fantastische Disarmoni Mundi komen even meebrullen.
Alle nummers zijn boeiend en stevig, maar mijn favoriet is het bijna plompe ‘Burial’, wat me erg aan Amon Amarth doet denken, meer bepaald aan ‘Victorious March’. De riffs zijn even vlammend en transparant als bij de machtige Zweedse Vikingen en het nummer heeft ook erg knap solowerk. In ‘The Way You Want To Die’ is het dan weer het duister gesproken fragment en de razendsnelle solo die mijn aandacht trekken. Een grandioze en wilde cover van het Iron Maiden nummer ‘Be Quick Or Be Dead’ sluit dit erg goede melodieuze death metal album af in schoonheid.
