For many years, Axel Rudi Pell has stood as a symbol of ‘guarantee’ in the delivery of quality-filled albums (from Deep Purple-style to Rainbow-style albums). This excellent guitarist surprises both friend and foe alike with his diversity. He has his own problem of categorizing music…It doesn’t matter if the song is good or not, it doesn’t matter which style it is and it doesn’t matter who is performing it. He has absolutely no fixation on Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. He wants to highlight his variety and diversity on this album by delivering rather unobvious songs. It’s not an easy task because covers will always be compared to the original versions, especially if it’s one of the better songs. The cover artist must always bring that extra ‘something’ to the song to help convince the listener that there is added value to that track. Axel Rudi Pell has completely succeeded in doing just that. The album is brimming with skilful work and finesse in its execution! I was especially charmed by “Stoneâ€. It’s a terrific song that has really grabbed the listener’s attention. This new version is a lot better than the Chris Rea original, but a bit less successful than the version by The Law (with Paul Rodgers on vocals and Dave Gilmour on guitar!) But still, this cover is absolutely fantastic! The acoustic version of “Love Gun†(Kiss) was first heard by Kiss on their MTV Unplugged album. The comparison with the original is very good. It’s here where you really notice the power of a good singer and Johnny Gioeli fills that role. I would also like to draw your attention to the compositional qualities of the original artists! This trimmed down acoustical version proves that the song is very sound. The album is full of compositions from ‘big’ names: U2, Michael Bolton, The Free, The Who and Phil Collins. The most interesting cover is one from Phil Collins. What Axel did with “In the Air Tonight†is comparable to what Joe Cocker had done “With a Little Help from My Friendsâ€, by the Beatles, or what Bruce Springsteen did with “Blinded by the Lightâ€, by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. He lifts this already strong song to an even higher level, both musically and technically. The drum transitions from Phil Collins were very imposing, but apart from that, there wasn’t much in terms of vocal techniques or instrumentation. What Axel Rudi Pell and singer Johnny Gioeli do with this song borders on the unbelievable. This new version gives you goose bumps. The excitement, like in the original version, is still there but it’s enforced even more so. The guitar parts are a lot stronger, but it’s the singing that makes it fabulous. Even the added passages and the tempo changes are well thought out. It’s a super cover song!
‘Diamonds Unlocked’ is a very successful cover album on all counts. Those above mentioned songs help to make this album worthy of one of the best albums of the year… I’m going to hurry and go put on the new version of “In the Air Tonight†so that I can quickly forget about the original :-).

Axel Rudi Pell staat al jaren garant voor het afleveren van kwaliteitsvolle albums die zich situeren tussen Deep Purple en Rainbow. De uitmuntende gitarist verrast met elk nieuw album vriend en vijand door zijn verscheidenheid. Persoonlijk heeft hij dan ook een probleem om muziek in vakjes te plaatsen. Ofwel is het een goede song of wel niet, eenders welke stijl, eenders welke uitvoerder. Hij heeft dan ook totaal geen hard rock of heavy metal fixatie. Op dit album wil hij zijn variatie en verscheidenheid extra in de verf zetten door niet zo voor de hand liggende covers ten gehore te brengen. Op zich al niet zo eenvoudig omdat een cover steeds zal vergeleken worden met het origineel, zeker als het gaat om één van de betere songs. De coverartiest zal dus altijd ‘iets’ meer moeten brengen om de luisteraar ervan te overtuigen dat er een ‘toegevoegde waarde’ is.
Axel Rudi Pell is daar over de ganse lijn in geslaagd. Het album staat bol van vakkundig werk en finesse in de uitvoering! Ik ben in het bijzonder gecharmeerd door de keuze van het nummer “Stone†al was het alleen al maar om dit enorm knap nummer terug onder de aandacht van de luisteraar te brengen. Deze versie is stukken beter dan het origineel van Chris Rea, maar is wel wat minder dan de versie van The Law (met Paul Rodgers op zang en Dave Gilmour op gitaar!) Toch is deze cover van uitstekende kwaliteit! De akoestische versie van “Love Gun†(Kiss) konden we van de originele uitvoerders het eerst horen op hun ‘MTV Unplugged’ album. De vergelijking met het origineel wordt met glans doorstaan. Hieruit blijkt de kracht van een goede zanger. Johnny Gioeli is dit zonder meer. Ook wil ik jullie op de compositorische kwaliteiten van de originele artiesten attent maken! Deze afgeslankte akoestische versie bewijst de degelijkheid van de song. Het album staat vol met composities van ‘grote’ namen: U2, Michael Bolton, The Free, The Who, Phil Collins. Met deze laatste zijn we meteen beland bij de meest interessante cover. Wat Joe Cocker destijds met “With A Little Help From My Friends†van de Beatles of wat Manfred Mann’s Earth Band met “Blinded By The Light†van Bruce Springsteen deed, doet Axel hier met “In The Air Tonightâ€. Hij tilt dit, toch wel compositorisch sterk nummer, ook muzikaal en technisch naar een hoger niveau. Buiten de imposante drumovergangen van Phil Collins in het originele stelde het nummer zangtechnisch en instrumentatie weinig voor. Wat Axel Rudi Pell samen met zanger Johnny Gioeli met deze song doet, grenst aan het ongelofelijke. Deze nieuwe versie bezorgt je kippenvel, de spanning, zoals in het origineel, blijft overeind integendeel ze wordt nog verstevigd. De gitaarpartijen zijn veel sterker, maar vooral de zang maakt het fabuleus. Ook de bijgevoegde passages en tempowisselingen zijn goed bekeken. Super cover!
Over heel de lijn is deze ‘Diamonds Unlocked’ als coveralbum geslaagd, de opgenoemde uitschieters maken dat dit album tot één van de beste van het jaar genoemd kan worden… Ik ga nog snel eens de nieuwe versie van “In The Air Tonight†opzetten om het origineel gauw te vergeten. :-)
