BATTLELORE: Doombound

Battlelore plays Epic Fantasy Metal. The fantasy part is easily explained, because it’s a concept album, the first for these Finns, taken from the books of Tolkien. This album tells the story of “The Children of Húrinâ€, a book that was never finished by J.R.R Tolkien, but his son Christopher completed it and released it in 2007.
The Children of Húrin takes the reader back to a time long before The Lord of the Rings, in an area of Middle-earth that was to be drowned before Hobbits appeared, and when the great enemy was still the fallen Vala, Morgoth, and Sauron was only Morgoth's lieutenant. This heroic romance is the tale of the Man, Húrin, who dared to defy Morgoth, and his family's tragic destiny, as it follows his son Túrin Turambar's travels through the lost world of Beleriand...
Material enough for an epic album which by times sounds as the soundtrack for a movie. The keyboards and flute of Maria Honkanen play a mayor part in this symphonic, heavy, doomy metal album. To stay with Tolkien, the beautiful voice of elven Kaisa is perfectly in balance with the orc vocals of Tomi. Let’s call it “The Beauty and the Beast†effect and I’m not really talking about their looks. Kaisa could use some more energy and variation, because she keeps it all very quiet. Luckily Tomi delivers the heavy edge with his vocals, which sound a lot like Johan Edlund from Tiamat.
Technically, everything sounds perfect. No wonder because Janne Saksa (Sound Supreme Studio) and Dan Swanö were the sound magicians. Dan already produced the previous album “The Last Allianceâ€.
This album has all the ingredients of a gothic, epic metal band but rises easily above the average quality of most of such bands.
True fans will adore the limited edition first pressing 6-panel digipack, which includes a bonus DVD (Live at Club Nosturi 2008 and 2009, video clips, and behind-the-scenes footage).

Battlelore noemt hun eigen stijl Epic Fantasy Metal. Het fantasie gedeelte is gemakkelijk te verklaren, want het is een concept album, het eerste voor deze Finnen, gebaseerd op de boeken van Tolkien. “Doombound†vertelt het verhaal van “De Kinderen van Húrinâ€, een boek dat nooit werd afgewerkt door J.R.R Tolkien, maar zijn zoon Christopher vervolledigde het verhaal en gaf het uit in 2007.
“De Kinderen van Húrin†neemt de lezer mee naar een tijd, lang voor “The Lord of the Ringsâ€, voordat de Hobbits ten tonele verschenen. De grote vijand was toen nog de gevallen Vala, Morgoth en Sauron was slechts Morgoth’s luitenant. Deze heroïsche roman vertelt het verhaal van Húrin, die Morgoth durfde uitdagen en het tragische lot van zijn familie. Het boek volgt vooral zijn zoon Túrin Turambar's reizen doorheen de verloren wereld van Beleriand...
Materiaal genoeg voor een episch album dat af en toe klinkt als de soundtrack van een film. De keyboards en dwarsfluit van Maria Honkanen spelen een grote rol op dit symfonisch, hevig, ‘doomy’ metal album. Om bij Tolkien te blijven, de mooie stem van de elf Kaisa is perfect in evenwicht met de ork vocalen van Tomi. Laten we het “Het schone en het beest†effect noemen en ik heb het hier helemaal niet over hun uiterlijk. Kaisa kon wel wat meer energie en variatie gebruiken, want ze houdt het allemaal erg rustig. Gelukkig levert Tomi een heftiger kant met zijn stem, die erg lijkt op die van Johan Englund van Tiamat.
Technisch klinkt alles perfect. Dit is helemaal geen wonder want Janne Saksa (Sound Supreme Studio) en Dan Swanö waren de geluidstovenaars. Dan stond ook al in voor de productie van het vorige album “The Last Allianceâ€.
Dit album bevat alle ingrediënten van een gothic, epische metalgroep maar steekt toch uit boven de gemiddelde kwaliteit van dit soort groepen.
De echte fans zullen zeker watertanden bij het zien van de limited edition first pressing in een 6-panel digipack, dat ook een bonus DVD bevat. (Live in Club Nosturi 2008 en 2009, video clips, en ook nog ‘behind-the-scenes’ materiaal).
