ARTAS: Riotology

You get value for money with Artas: more than one hour battering thrash/death metal with nice melodious guitar ornaments are yours when purchasing this second album ‘Riotology’. Well, the debut ‘The Healing’ already appeared to be a meritorious bunch of energy from these five young guys of Austria, but for this sophomore effort they just wanted to improve again. To lead all this unbridled inspiration into good channels, they contacted famous producer Jacob Hansen (Hatesphere, Heaven Shall Burn, Neaera) again. Since the visual presentation is important as well, Jan Yrlund was the man to design this.
Sometimes modern metal with aggressive riffs, loads of double bass drums and various vocal styles (Obi as ferocious whistling-buoy and guitarist Hannes for clean vocals) might be too much of the same in modern productions, but in this case it isn’t. Lyrics are is no less than four languages (German, English, Spanish and French) and in between the compelling brutality, catchy choruses add an elated zest. In addition the band regales us with a moment of introspection with violin in ‘Between Poets And Murderers’. Atmospheric guitar parts and melodic soloing are the icing on the cake. ‘No Pasaran’ is another agreeable surprise, while short acoustic intermezzos like both ‘O5’ tracks are a welcome moment of rest. ‘A Martyr’s Dawn’ reminds me a bit of Amon Amarth riff-wise (Swedish death metal is an important influence anyway) and just like the former album, this one finishes with a magnificent emotive moment during the track with the delicious title ‘‘Surrounded By Darkness We Are Able To See The Stars’. In brief: one can find much variegation in this hour music, that’s why it is grandly recommended. You can hear that all these musicians had experience in other bands, even before they won a conquest at Metalcamp 2007 with a contract with Napalm Records as immediate result. Go, go for album number three!

Je krijgt waar voor je geld bij Artas: meer dan een uur beukende thrash/death metal met fraaie melodieuze gitaarornamenten valt ons ten deel op dit tweede album ‘Riotology’. Nu vond ik het debuut ‘The Healing’ al een verdienstelijke brok energie van deze vijf jonge honden uit Oostenrijk, maar voor de opvolger legden ze de lat nog net iets hoger. Om al die ongebreidelde inspiratie op een gedegen manier in goede banen te leiden, namen ze befaamd producer Jacob Hansen (Hatesphere, Heaven Shall Burn, Neaera) onder de arm. Het oog wilt ook wat en dus mocht Jan Yrlund voor het artwork zorgen.
Moderne metal met agressieve riffs, veel dubbele bas drumwerk en verschillende zangstijlen (Obi als woeste brulboei en gitarist Hannes als cleane vocalist) kan soms teveel van het goede worden op moderne producties, maar in dit geval is dat niet zo. De teksten zijn maar liefst in vier talen (Duits, Engels, Spaans en Frans) en tussen de meeslepende agressiviteit zorgen aanstekelijke meezingrefreinen voor een uitgelaten sfeer. Bovendien vergast de band ons in ‘Between Poets And Murderers’ op een waar rustpunt met viool. Atmosferische gitaarstukken en melodische solo’s zorgen voor de kers op de taart. ‘No Pasaran’ is een andere aangename verrassing, terwijl korte akoestische intermezzo’s als beide ‘O5’ een welkom moment van rust vormen. ‘A Martyr’s Dawn’ doet me in het riffwerk wat aan Amon Amarth denken (Zweedse death is een grote invloed) en net zoals vorig album eindigt ‘Riotology’ met een prachtig ingetogen moment tijdens een nummer met de verrukkelijke titel ‘Surrounded By Darkness We Are Able To See The Stars’. Kortom, er valt heel wat afwisseling te spotten in dit uur muziek en dat maakt dat ‘Riotology’ als geheel een aanrader is. Het is dan ook te merken dat al deze muzikanten al ervaring hadden in vorige bands vooraleer ze een wedstrijd wonnen op Metalcamp in 2007 en daarmee een contract met Napalm Records in de wacht sleepten. Op naar nummer drie!
