INFINITY OVERTURE: The Infinite Overture pt. 1

Infinity Overture gave us a proper idea of their skills with their debut album ‘Kingdom Of Utopia’ in 2009. With vocalist Ian Parry and some female vocals, this debut ought to be a promise for the future. That future has shuffled the cards, thus one can speak of a true progression. The sophomore album ‘The Infinite Overture pt. 1’ has less symphonic elements and mainly focuses on the virtuoso guitar skills of founder/composer Niels Vejlyt. In addition the Danish musician gathered a new band around him with female vocalist Kimmie Tenna Nielsen as front lady. She has a powerful, classic voice that stands proud in the midst of the cataract of staggering arpeggios.
The album kicks off in full-blooded neoclassical style with fast and furious guitar soloing of Niels. It demands a bit time to get used to female vocals herewith, but after a few spins you have to admit that they did not make a wrong choice at all. The chorus of ‘The Stand’ is very fetching and the angelic vocals with piano in ‘Angels’ are extremely beautiful. In ‘Evernight’ those female vocals are suddenly relished with a chunky groove-laden male grunt. This gives a delicious contrast in the middle of an opulence of complex instrumental patterns. The same combination also works very well in ‘Smoke And Mirrors’, the only song with any symphonic tinges. There are quite some sensitive songs on ‘The Infinite Overture pt. 1’. ‘Back From The Past’ (sung by a man) is the weakest one of them, but occluding track ‘Darkness Of Mind’ – with a marvellous echo of growls and amazing, emotive vocals of Kimmie – makes this amply good. The title track with its seven minutes length gives Niels the opportunity to cut loose on his six strings. Great! Everything is mixed and mastered in a proper manner by the famous duo Sascha Paeth and Miro. We look forward to the second part of this “overtureâ€!

Met ‘Kingdom Of Utopia’ leverde Infinity Overture in 2009 een degelijk staalkaartje van hun kunnen af. Met zanger Ian Parry en enige vrouwelijke vocalen was dit een debuut dat veelbelovend was voor de toekomst. Die toekomst heeft de kaarten geschud, zodat we met recht kunnen spreken van enige progressie. Het tweede album ‘The Infinite Overture pt. 1’ heeft minder symfonische trekjes en richt de schijnwerpers vooral op het virtuoze gitaarspel van oprichter/componist Niels Vejlyt. Bovendien verzamelde de Deense muzikant een nieuwe band om zich heen met zangeres Kimmie Tenna Nielsen als frontdame. Zij heeft een krachtige, klassieke stem die mooi overeind blijft tussen de cataract aan wervelende arpeggio’s.
Het album bloeit open in volle neoklassieke stijl met snel gitaarwerk van Niels. Het is even wennen om hierbij vrouwelijke zang te horen, maar na enkele luisterbeurten moet je toegeven dat men geen verkeerde keuze gemaakt heeft. Het refrein van ‘The Stand’ is zelfs aanstekelijk en de engelachtige zang met pianobegeleiding in ‘Angels’ is bloedmooi. Deze vrouwelijke zang wordt in ‘Evernight’ plots verfraaid door een volvette mannelijke grunt met rollende groove. Temidden van de ingewikkelde instrumentale patronen zorgt dit voor een smakelijk contrast. Dezelfde combinatie werkt ook sterk in ‘Smoke And Mirrors’, het enige nummer dat het symfonische element terug laat zegevieren. Er staan ook nogal wat gevoelige songs op ‘The Infinite Overture pt. 1’. Daarvan bevalt het door een man gezongen ‘Back From The Past’ me wat minder, maar afsluiter ‘Darkness Of Mind’ – met een verrukkelijke echo van growls naast de prachtige zang van Kimmie – maakt dit ruimschoots goed. Het titelnummer met zijn zeven minuten speelduur biedt ruimte om Niels nog eens flink te laten excelleren op de zes snaren. Knap gedaan! Alles is perfect gemixt en gemastered door het befaamde duo Sascha Paeth en Miro. Laat deel twee van deze “overture†maar komen!
