YAOTL MICTLAN: Dentro Del Manto Gris De Chaac

These Mexicans look as if they are on their way to the next robbery. Nevertheless the ‘banditos’ produce a raucous portion black metal in which they add all kinds of local ethnic instruments. The Mexican Negura Bunget? Not yet, since they still need some improvement.
However it happens to be a fairly interesting initiative. Yaotl Mictlan means warriors from the land of the dead in the Mexican Nahuatl language. The brothers Yaotl and Tlatecatl emigrated to Utah (US) and started working out some musical ideas in 1998 in the garage of their parents. It should unite their love for Mexican and Maya culture with raucous black metal. The lyrics – partly in Spanish, partly in Maya language – deal with a huge respect for ancient traditions of the culture once rejected by Christianity. After a few demos they released their full length debut 'Guerreros de la Tierra de los Muertos’ in 2008 and it drew the attention of Candlelight Records.
The first four songs of ‘Dentro del Manto Gris de Chaac’ are rough and straight forward black metal with now and then an incidental ethnic moment. It only gets interesting from the fifth song on (‘Gemelos Heroes’) in which mysteriousness prevails. Any dissonant progressive influences are not shunned in ‘Noche Triunfadora’ where vomiting vocals are sublimated by a penetrating sound of a kind of ethnic shell. You will notice: this is not your daily bread. I had my objections… Until the last two songs made us forget about the underground production and general mediocrity. After more than four minutes ‘Huelitiyoti Mexica’ suddenly spreads undefined sounds in between a kind of Moonsorrow alike eschatology and it suddenly takes a turn to enchantment. Occluding track ‘Nada Verde Crece Aqui’ even has the nearest approach to sublimity. A sharp flute-like sound and acoustic guitars are intermittent with mid-paced fiery black metal. Finally we can agree with their potential talent. If this is the herald of the next CD we are on the first row! Until now it is only recommended to advanced blackies: a concept that might need some improvement, but surely gives us any perspectives for the future.

Deze Mexicanen zien eruit alsof ze op weg zijn naar de volgende overval. De “banditos†produceren echter een ruw potje black metal waarin ze allerlei locale etnische instrumenten aan toevoegen. De Mexicaanse Negura Bunget? Zo’n vaart loopt het nog niet, want één en ander moet nog geperfectioneerd worden.
Het initiatief is nochtans interessant. Yaotl Mictlan betekent krijgers uit het dodenland in de Mexicaanse Nahuatl taal. De naar Utah (USA) uitgeweken broers Yaotl en Tlatecatl begonnen in 1998 in de garage van hun ouders te sleutelen aan een muzikaal project dat hun liefde voor de Mexicaanse en Maya cultuur zou verenigen met rauwe black metal. De teksten – deels in Spaans of in Maya-taal – gewagen van een groot respect voor aloude tradities van de door de Christenen verworpen cultuur. Na enkele demo’s brachten ze in 2008 het volwaardige debuut ‘ Guerreros de la Tierra de los Muertos’ uit en dit trok de aandacht van Candlelight Records.
De eerste vier nummers van ‘Dentro del Manto Gris de Chaac’ zijn rauwe black metal met her en der een verloren etnisch moment. Het wordt pas interessant vanaf het vijfde nummer ‘Gemelos Heroes’ waarin geheimzinnigheid zegeviert. Enige dissonante prog wordt niet uit de weg gegaan in ‘Noche Triunfadora’ waarbij kotsende vocalen gesublimeerd worden door het toetergeluid van een soort inheemse schelp. U merkt het: dit is geen dagelijkse kost. Ik had mijn bedenkingen… Tot de twee laatste nummers ons plots de hakketakproductie en middelmatigheid doen vergeten. Na ruim vier minuten heeft ‘Huelitiyoti Mexica’ plots heldere ondefinieerbare klanken tussen een Moonsorrow achtige eschatologie en wordt het plots beter. Afsluiter ‘Nada Verde Crece Aqui’ schurkt zelfs tegen sublimiteit aan. Een scherp fluitje en akoestische klanken worden afgewisseld met medium tempo vlammende black metal waarbij we eindelijk kunnen instemmen met hun potentieel talent. Als dit de voorbode is voor de volgende cd staan we op de eerste rij! Voorlopig is dit alleen aan te raden voor gevorderden in de blackologie: een concept dat liefst nog wat tot ontwikkeling komt, maar zeker perspectieven voor de toekomst biedt.
