MEHIDA: Blood & Water

Mehida is a new melodic progressive metal band, but we can find some renowned names in the line-up. When keyboardist Mikko Harkin (ex-Sonata Arctica, ex-Kotipelto) had written the material for a second Wingdom album, the guitarist and singer of that band did not agree with the heavier direction that Mikko intended. Mikko left Wingdom but he was supported by drummer Markus Niemispelto and bassist Jarno Raitio, a rhythm section he had been playing with since 1995. The right man for the heavier guitar stuff turned out to be Jani Stefanovic, known from e.g. DivineFire. Through him, Mehida could use the vocal contribution of Thomas Vikström. That is another famous name, for he once sang in Candlemass and this year he joined Therion as tour vocalist, replacing Mats Levén. The line-up of this new Finnish band is nothing but super promising.
All members actively contributed to complete the written material and the recordings were done at the Fantom Studio under guidance of Samu Oittinen. An important feature of the music are heavy, steady, hooky thrash-alike riffs and some incidental short solos plus a mauling rhythm section, but it is obvious that this music was written by a keyboard player for the songs most of all have room for his skills. Lots of variegation can be found in his play: going from classical piano in the semi-ballads to vortex, amazing solos on keyboards to ambient alike parts. The songs are not that easy to fathom, that’s why they need repeated spins. The background vocals with their musical allied feeling do bother me sometimes in some of the songs. Together with the Christian lyrics it may get too cheesy, but that is a matter of personal taste.
The songs have great arrangements and are worked out fine. Surprising is the muscular start of ‘Multitude’ with rebellious heavy vocals supported by some thrash riffs. This dark song has a proper tension, just like the very tight ‘Dry Bones’ in which the rhythm section cuts loose. On the other hand we have semi-ballads like ‘Lost Ones’ and even a catchy gothic track (‘Grace’). In spite of influences from various metal genres and a certain complexity, one may describe ‘Blood & Water’ as very melodious (also due to vocals, though I am not fond of them in every song), but progressive rock fans will enjoy fathoming this record if they take the time. A meritorious debut album that lacks something to be a real stunner, but it is hard to tell exactly what is missing.

Mehida is een nieuwe melodische progressieve metal band, maar in de bezetting vinden we enkele klinkende namen. Toen toetsenist Mikko Harkin (ex-Sonata Arctica, ex-Kotipelto) het materiaal geschreven had voor het tweede Wingdom album, bleken gitarist en zanger van deze band het absoluut niet eens te zijn met de hardere koers die Mikko wou varen. Mikko verliet Wingdom maar wist zich gesteund door drummer Markus Niemispelto en bassist Jarno Raitio, een ritmesectie waar hij al mee samenspeelt sinds 1995. De reddende man voor het hardere gitaarwerk bleek Jani Stefanovic, die we ook kennen van o.a. DivineFire. Via hem kon Mehida gebruik maken van de vocale bijdrage van Thomas Vikström. Dat is ook een bekende naam, want ooit zong hij in Candlemass en dit jaar werd hij de vervanger van Mats Levén als tourvocalist bij Therion. De bezetting van deze nieuwe Finse band is dus veelbelovend.
Alle leden werkten actief mee om het geschreven materiaal te vervolledigen en de opnamen gebeurden in de Fantom Studio onder leiding van Samu Oittinen. Centraal in de muziek staan stevige, hoekige riffs en enkele sporadische korte gitaarsolo’s, maar de muziek is duidelijk door een toetsenist geschreven want de nummers bieden vooral ruimte aan al zijn fratsen. Daar is veel afwisseling in te bespeuren: van klassieke piano in de semi-ballades tot wervelende solo’s op het klavier tot bijna ambientachtige stukjes. Het materiaal is niet erg toegankelijk zodat meerdere draaibeurten vereist zijn en ik stoor me wel een beetje aan de foute achtergrondkoren die een musicalachtig gevoel geven aan sommige nummers. Samen met de Christelijke teksten klinkt dit nogal eens “cheesyâ€, maar dit is een kwestie van persoonlijke smaak.
De nummers hebben goede arrangementen en zijn erg goed uitgewerkt. Verrassend is het gespierde begin van ‘Multitude’ waar opstandige zware zang gezelschap krijgt van thrash riffs. Dit donkere nummer houdt de spanning er in, evenals het erg strakke ‘Dry Bones’ waarin de ritmesectie lekker tekeer gaat. Anderzijds hebben we semi-ballades als ‘Lost Ones’ en zelfs een vlot gothic nummer (‘Grace’). Ondanks invloeden uit allerlei metalen genres en een zekere complexiteit kan men ‘Blood & Water’ toch als erg melodieus omschrijven (mede door de zang, waar ik niet altijd wild van ben), maar progressieve rockfans zijn er ook wel even zoet mee om dit plaatje te ontrafelen. Een verdienstelijk debuutalbum dat toch iets mist om een echte knaller te zijn, maar het is moeilijk om juist aan te geven wat er schort.
