Not a young, new band this time, jumping on the thrash revival train, but veterans in the scene who released two albums in the eighties (‘The Upcoming Terror’ and ‘Interstellar Experience’). In 1988 they did their first tour as support of Death Angel. During working on their third album, their equipment was stolen. It disappointed the band so badly that the end soon was drawing near. Like usual in Germany, their reunion was celebrated with a spot on Wacken (2003). The band was reinvigorated, but they kept on having problems in the line-up with members who suddenly moved or did not have the motivation anymore. ‘The Club’ (2005) was self-released, but now they inked a deal with SPV/Steamhammer and they cannot be stopped!
‘Breaking The Silence’ totally proves its title; it is three quarters of an hour thrash attack on maximum velocity. The songs are tart and shrill, guitars are ultra tight and impetuous solos serpentine through the ultimate brutality. Even if Assassin is a German band, they remind me most of all of Slayer, qua vocals as well as guitar sound. The chunky production of Harris Johns is done to a turn. The band verges too much to a hardcore/punk direction to be compared with bands such as Sodom, Tankard or Destruction. Those who have a soft spot for merciless, brutal thrash metal, go for Assassin!

Geen jonge, nieuwe band ditmaal die op de trein der thrashrevival springt, maar veteranen in het vak die in de jaren tachtig al twee albums, ‘The Upcoming Terror’ en ‘Interstellar Experience’, uitbrachten. In 1988 deden ze hun eerste tour als support voor Death Angel. Tijdens het werk aan hun derde album, werd al hun materiaal gestolen en dit demotiveerde de arme band zo erg dat het einde niet lang op zich liet wachten. Zoals dat gaat in Duitsland, vond de echte viering van een reünie plaats op Wacken 2003. De band ging er terug tegenaan maar kende heel wat problemen met leden die plots verhuisden of geen zin meer hadden. ‘The Club’ (2005) verscheen in eigen beheer, maar nu zijn ze getekend door SPV/Steamhammer en is er geen houden meer aan.
‘Breaking The Silence’ maakt zijn titel meer dan waard en is een drie kwartier durende thrashaanval in hogere versnelling. De songs klinken bits en schel, de gitaren zijn retestrak en onstuimige solo’s slingeren zich doorheen het geweld. Ook al is Assassin een Duitse band, ze doen me vooral aan Slayer denken, zowel qua zang als gitaarklank. De vette productie van Harris Johns mag er zijn, trouwens. Wel neigt de band iets te veel naar de hardcore/punk richting om met bijvoorbeeld Sodom, Tankard of Destruction vergeleken te worden. Wie nood heeft aan een meedogenloze, brutale hap thrash is hier aan het goede adres.
