IMPERIA: Secret Passion

In my review of the previous Imperia album ’Queen Of Light’ I mentioned that vocals were ultra passionate. And look what happened: the third album of this international band appears to be entitled ‘Secret Passion’. Helena Iren Michaelsen once achieved first fame as sensual opera-diva in Trail Of Tears. Later she built up an independent career as front lady of Imperia and Angel. We notice that she can still depend on - more or less - the same musicians, four years after ‘Queen Of Light’. Especially the multi-talented Jan Yrlund – native of Finland – supports her in writing songs, while he also did the artwork (as usual). For the rest Imperia is made up of the Belgian bassist Gerry Verstreken and German drummer Steve Wolz.
Thus it might not be a surprise that ‘Secret Passion’ came into being in four different studios: everyone recorded his/her parts in their home country and the entire album was regaled with orchestral arrangements by Oliver Phillips (Everon). He plays piano on the album too and sings the duet ‘My Sleeping Angel’ with Helena, a song for Helena’s daughter. Tina Guo adds some cello parts as guest musician, something one will mainly notice in the slower ‘Let Down’. This is a typical gothic metal album with suitable, wealthy orchestration. Fortunately it never gets too bombastic. We know since quite a while that Helena always chooses themes and feelings from her own experiences in life. She does not restrict herself to soprano chants, but also impresses with her low, sensual voice; just listen to the mysterious ‘Fragile’ or the smooth ‘Out Of Sight’. There are many accessible, catchy gothic songs on this album. For instance opening track ‘Touch Of Your Hand’, while the title track has the nearest approach to pop music. You should not listen to ‘Secret Passion’ with expectations to hear a heavy metal album – although the modern dynamic riffs in ‘Suicide’ (with extraordinary Nina Hagen-alike vocals) and heavy drums in ‘Violence’ surely add a wilder touch – since this CD includes no more less than four sensitive ballads with the compelling ‘Let Down’, ‘Hold On’, ‘Greed’ and ‘My Sleeping Angel’. The fine guitar accents in the wilder ‘Like Rain’ are strong, while vocals dwell into modern sounds in ‘Missing It All’. The only flop is the bonus track ‘Mistress’, because it is music for discos (nothing less nothing more). You better skip that. For the rest, ‘Secret Passion’ is a proper album from a very good female singer who has been around for a while in the gothic scene. In mijn bespreking van het vorige Imperia album ‘Queen Of Light’ merkte ik onder andere op dat de zang erg gepassioneerd was. En kijk, het derde album van deze internationale band kreeg de titel ‘Secret Passion’ mee. Helena Iren Michaelsen verwierf ooit eerste faam als sensuele operadiva in Trail Of Tears. Later bouwde ze een zelfstandige carrière uit als frontdame van Imperia en Angel. We merken dat ze vier jaar na ‘Queen Of Light’ nog steeds kan rekenen op - min of meer - dezelfde muzikanten. Vooral de getalenteerde Jan Yrlund – van Finse afkomst – staat haar bij in het schrijven van songs, terwijl hij traditiegetrouw ook het artwork deed. Verder bestaat Imperia uit de Belg Gerry Verstreken (bas) en de Duitse drummer Steve Wolz.
Het mag dan ook niet verwonderlijk zijn dat ‘Secret Passion’ tot stand kwam in vier verschillende studio’s: ieder nam zijn partijen op in het thuisland en het geheel werd voorzien van orkestrale arrangementen door Oliver Phillips (Everon). Hij speelt ook piano op het album en zingt samen met Helena een duet in het lieflijke ‘My Sleeping Angel’, een ode aan Helena’s dochter. Tina Guo is te horen op cello en dit komt vooral in het tragere ‘Let Down’ even op de voorgrond. Dit is een typisch gothic metal album met passende, weelderige orkestratie. Toch wordt het gelukkig niet al te bombastisch. We weten al langer dat Helena zingt over onderwerpen en gevoelens die meestal geplukt zijn uit haar eigen ervaringen. Ze beperkt zich allang niet meer tot sopraanzang, maar weet ook met haar lage, zwoele stem indruk te maken, luister maar naar het geheimzinnige ‘Fragile’ of het vlotte ‘Out Of Sight’. Er staan ook flink wat toegankelijke gothic songs op dit album. Opener ‘Touch Of Your Hands’ bijvoorbeeld, terwijl het titelnummer niet ver verwijderd is van pop. Naar ‘Secret Passion’ moet je dan ook niet luisteren om erg harde metal te horen – al voegen de moderne dynamische riffs in ‘Suicide’ (met knettergekke Nina Hagenachtige zang) en de drums in ‘Violence’ wel enige pit toe – want met het slepende ‘Let Down’, ‘Hold On’, ‘Greed’ en ‘My Sleeping Angel’ kent dit album maar liefst vier gevoelige tracks. De fraaie gitaaraccenten in het wildere ‘Like Rain’ zijn sterk, terwijl in ‘Missing It All’ de zang baadt in moderne geluiden. De enige echte misser is de bonustrack ‘Mistress’, want dat is gewoon discotheekmuziek. Foei! Dat hadden ze beter weggelaten. Verder een verzorgd album van een heel goede zangeres die al een poos meedraait in de gothic rock scène en de aandacht niet alleen weet te trekken door haar stem, maar ook door haar sensuele verschijning.
