TANGENT PLANE: Project Elimi

Tangent Plane is the project of composer/keyboard player Ralph Swan Krieger. Based on a testing EP (to check reactions), a band was formed around him in 2007. Next to three German musicians – the band is based in Berlin – one can find the Greek bassist Kostas Kontos and the Italian guitarist Piero Pellegrino. This international outfit released a debut ‘Among Grey Masks’ earlier, but from early 2010 on they worked on a second album. ‘Project Elimi’ was recorded at the studio of C. Schmid and R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy) and the sound and production is very well, nothing to complain.
A point of discussion may be the vocals. I am really open-minded on that matter, but the vocals of Jan Michaelis are really irritating from time to time. Not only his accent, but for instance the shrill shouts in ‘Do You Live’ or the flagging vocal lines in ‘Borrow Me Your Dullness’ really spoil the pleasure of listening. That’s a pity, since instrumentally Tangent Plane plays the kind of progressive power metal I like. Although I have to admit that it is not simple to follow their intricate turns in the songs (‘One With The Lies’) and the music gives me an uncomfortable feeling for some reason. In opening track ‘One Month In Real-Time’ the band reminds me a bit of a speedy Dream Theater and the sensitive, prog-like guitar solos of Piero are magnificent in ‘Deadborn’. That’s a song that leaps to the eye. It has a rather languid tempo, but a special atmosphere. ‘Ice Age’ (with acoustic intro) is also a beautiful track. This is part one of a trilogy and the band loves lengthy songs. Ultimate prove of that is the title track which occludes the album. It has a length of 22 minutes. There is much variegation in it, with different parts, like a spoken fragment, again a beautiful guitar solo, a heavier passage with scream-like vocals, calm parts with sensitive vocals and finally an acoustic part with lovely twittering birds. Have a listen whether vocals please you or not and then you can decide to purchase this long (value for money) album.

Tangent Plane is het project van componist/keyboardspeler Ralph Swan Krieger. Op basis van een verkennende ep werd in 2007 een band rond hem gevormd. Naast drie Duitsers – de band woont in Berlijn – treffen we de Griekse bassist Kostas Kontos aan en de Italiaanse gitarist Piero Pellegrino. Eerder bracht dit internationale gezelschap al het debuut ‘Among Grey Masks’ uit, maar vanaf begin 2010 werd er gewerkt aan een tweede album. ‘Project Elimi’ werd opgenomen in de studio van C. Schmid en R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy) en op het geluid is niets aan te merken.
Wat me wel tegenvalt is de zang. Ik ben heel breeddenkend op dat gebied, maar de vocalen van Jan Michaelis zijn soms echt irritant. Niet alleen het accent, maar ook bijvoorbeeld het schelle geroep in ‘Do You Live’ of de haperende zanglijnen in ‘Borrow Me Your Dullness’ halen het luisterplezier danig naar beneden. Spijtig, want instrumentaal brengt Tangent Plane het soort progressieve power metal dat me best bevalt. Wel moet ik zeggen dat ik er soms kop noch staart aan kan krijgen (‘One With The Lies’) en de muziek me op één of andere reden een ongemakkelijk gevoel geeft. In opener doet de band wel een beetje aan een energieke Dream Theater denken en de gevoelige, proggy gitaarsolo’s van Piero zijn prachtig in ‘Deadborn’. Dat is een opvallend nummer dat een vrij gezapig tempo heeft, maar wel een speciale sfeer. Ook ‘Ice Age’ (met akoestische intro) is een mooi nummer. Dit is deel 1 van een trilogie en de band houdt van lange nummers. Toppunt is het titelnummer aan het einde dat maar liefst 22 minuten duurt. Er komen dan ook veel verschillende stukken in voor, zoals een gesproken stuk, weer een mooie gitaarsolo, een hard gedeelte met schreeuwerige zang, kalme passages met sensitieve zang en op het laatste zelfs akoestische gitaren en lieflijke kwetterende vogeltjes. Luister dus eerst even of de zang je bevalt, dan kan je overgaan tot aankoop.
