VISIONS OF ATLANTIS: Delta

The amount female-fronted metalbands has exploded since the success of bands like Within Temptation, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Epica and many more. To find a place amongst these established bands is not an easy task. Visions of Atlantis from Austria has been around for more than ten years, but never reached the top. And I don’t think this new album will get them there, either.
They have improved since their previous release, that’s for sure. The music is very symphonic and sounds very high budget. Actually, there’s nothing wrong with the music. Every track sounds professional. Terms like symphonic, bombastic, orchestral all apply for this band. Maybe a bit too much because they tend to shove the guitars to the background in favour of the keyboards and the vocals.
Maxi Nil from Greece is the new female singer, because Melissa Ferlaak already left the band after one album “Trinityâ€. I preferred Melissa’s voice, because her voice more fitted this style. But Maxi is not the real problem. I have a hard time getting used to the voice of Mario Plank, which has a strange sound.
But there’s still hope for Visions of Atlantis, because the last track “Gravitate Towards Fatality†is by far the best track of this album and they should really proceed in that direction if they want to earn a place amongst the high quality bands.

Het aantal female-fronted metalbands kende een regelrechte explosie sinds het succes van groepen als Within Temptation, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Epica en nog vele andere. Om een stek te verkrijgen tussen deze gevestigde groepen is geen gemakkelijke taak. Visions of Atlantis uit Oostenrijk bestaat al meer dan tien jaar, maar heeft nooit de echte top bereikt. En ik denk niet dat dit nieuwe album daar verandering zal in brengen.
Ze zijn veel verbeterd sinds hun vorige release, dat is zeker. De muziek is zeer symfonisch en klinkt zeer high-budget. Eigenlijk is er niets mis met de muziek. Elk nummer klinkt professioneel. Termen als symfonisch, bombastisch, orkestraal zijn allemaal van toepassing. Misschien een beetje te veel, want ze hebben de neiging om de gitaren naar de achtergrond te schuiven ten gunste van de keyboards en de zang.
Maxi Nil uit Griekenland is de nieuwe zangeres, want Melissa Ferlaak verliet de band al na één album. ("Trinity"). Ik prefereerde Melissa's stem, want die paste beter bij deze muziekstijl. Maar Maxi is niet het echte probleem. Ik heb het moeilijk om te wennen aan de stem van Mario Plank, die toch wel heel apart klinkt.
Maar er is nog hoop voor Visions of Atlantis, want het laatste nummer “Gravitate Towards Fatality†is veruit het beste nummer van dit album en ze zouden moeten verderwerken in die richting als ze een plaats aan de top willen verdienen.
