SUIDAKRA: Book Of Dowth

Suidakra has been around and active for many years. They can be considered as pioneers of blending harsh black/death metal with refined folk influences. Fortunately they lately became more and more successful and that is partly due to hectic tour schedules all over the world. In addition Suidakra appears to have found its own niche in the genre. Without remarkable changes this time, one may call ‘Book Of Dowth’ (free translation: book of darkness) a logical successor of ‘Crogacht’ (2009).
Where can we spot those similarities? First of all music-wise, because despite of many acoustic, folky breaks, this is a very wild, heavy album. On the lyrical level: for the second time the band asked Kris Verwimp to write a mythological story. This story is inspired by the darker side of Celtic mythology. It is a quite intricate story about a student who opens a secret book and thus raises a curse over the Fomorian folks. That’s a mysterious race of demonic beings. It is no wonder that Kris Verwimp was eager to illustrate this deep-draught story. He did the artwork as well, as he uses to do for Suidakra since a long time.
Initially ‘Book Of Dowth’ happens to have a bit less direct impact than ‘Crogacht’, that is because the album is a more complex. With every spin you will discover new nuances and that is the merit of a more and more experienced, matured band. Now band leader Arkadius feels more confident in his double vocal role: savage raucous screams as well as beautiful clean vocals are done by him. In the intro ‘Over Nine Waves’ we hear guest musician/bagpipes player Axel Römer, a long time friend of the band. With ‘Dowth 2059’ – they shot a video clip for it – and ‘Battle-Cairns’ this album kicks off in a very harsh way. This fast and tight black metal is really overwhelming! A sudden twist happens with ‘Birog’s Oath’ in which female guest vocalist Tina Stabel does lead vocals. She could be heard on previous Suidakra albums too. Do not think of those empyrean ladies from the gothic scene; this is a singer with a powerful, yet emotive throat, singing rather low-ranged. Naturally there are loads of acoustic guitar fragments on the album, nay even mandolin in the magnificent mid-paced ‘Stone Of The Seven Suns’. On top of this, clean harmony vocals are very fetching in some of the songs. Just listen to ‘Fury Fomoraigh’ that fades away in a mixture of heavy riffs and strange, ethnic sounds towards the end. The wolf in the outro ‘Otherworlds Collide’ stands for the desolation in a perished world. Once again top notch quality of Suidakra and those guys are go-getters: 2011 will be a year of massive touring.

Suidakra timmert al jarenlang aan de weg. Zij kunnen beschouwd worden als pioniers in het vermengen van heftige black/death metal met geraffineerde folk invloeden. De laatste jaren oogsten ze gelukkig meer succes en daar heeft een druk tourschema ook veel mee te maken. Bovendien lijkt Suidakra eindelijk zijn draai gevonden te hebben, want ditmaal zonder opmerkelijke veranderingen is ‘Book Of Dowth’ (vrij vertaald: het boek der duisternis) een logische opvolger van het in 2009 verschenen ‘Crógacht’.
Waar vallen deze overeenkomsten te spotten? Op muzikaal vlak, want ondanks vele akoestische, folky breaks is dit een wild, hevig album. Ook op tekstueel vlak, want voor de tweede maal liet de band Kris Verwimp een mythologisch verhaal schrijven. Dit verhaal maakt deel uit van de donkere zijde uit de Keltische mythologie. Het is een ingewikkeld verhaal over een student die in het geheim een verboden boek opent en zo een vloek doet neerdalen op het volk, de ‘Fomor’. Dat is een mysterieus ras van duivelse creaturen. Geen wonder dat onze Belgische kunstenaar Kris Verwimp dit ook een dankbaar onderwerp vond om eveneens in te staan voor het artwork. Dat doet hij trouwens al jaren voor Suidakra.
‘Book Of Dowth’ grijpt aanvankelijk wat minder direct naar de strot dan ‘Crogacht’, maar dat komt omdat dit album wat complexer is. Bij elke luisterbeurt ontdek je namelijk nieuwe nuances en dat is toch wel de verdienste van een meer en meer ervaren band. Bandleider Arkadius voelt zich nu al helemaal thuis in zijn dubbele vocale rol: zowel de woeste ruwe zang als de mooie cleane vocalen worden door hem gedaan. In de intro ‘Over Nine Waves’ horen we gastmuzikant/doedelzakspeler Axel Römer, al jarenlang een vriend van de band. Met ‘Dowth 2059’ – ook een videoclip voor gemaakt – en ‘Battle-Cairns’ gaat dit album bijzonder hard en ruw van start. De snelle en strakke black metal walst gewoon over je heen. De ommezwaai is er plots met ‘Birog’s Oath’ waarin gastzangeres Tina Stabel de solozang doet. Ook zij was al eerder te horen op Suidakra albums. Denk allerminst aan de verheven freules uit de gothic wereld; dit is een zangeres met een door het leven getekende keel die vrij laag zingt. Natuurlijk horen we in vele songs fragmenten met akoestische gitaren, ja zelfs mandoline in het prachtige mediumtempo ‘Stone Of The Seven Suns’. Bovendien is de heldere samenzang in sommige songs erg aanstekelijk. Luister maar naar ‘Fury Fomoraigh’ dat naar het einde toe wegebt in een mix van zware riffs en vreemde, etnische klanken. De wolf in outro ‘Otherworlds Collide’ vertolkt de verlatenheid in een vergane wereld. Weer eens topkwaliteit van Suidakra en de mannen pakken de zaken krachtdadig aan: 2011 staat in het teken van toeren.
