ASTRAL DOORS: New Revelation

Earlier this year, vocalist Patrik Johansson could be heard on ‘Emotional Coma’, the comeback CD of Lion’s Share, but the man is full of energy for now the fourth album (if we do not reckon in the in-between ‘Raiders Of The Ark’ EP) of his main band Astral Doors is out. They are very successful and I prophesied this from the very debut. The classical hard rock inspired by Black Sabbath, Dio and Rainbow is always executed with huge conviction by the astral Swedes and the winged compositions are fetching. Plus of course the masterly voice of Patrik, enormously similar to Dio’s.
After the release of previous album ‘Astralism’, Astral Doors got the marvellous offer to tour two months through Europe with Blind Guardian. It showed the band at its best, resulting in again a distinguished increase of fans. There was no time to sit back and relax, because the solid band (no line-up changes ever) started to write new songs for ‘New Revelation’ right after this tour. If ‘Astralism’ appears to be a very guitar oriented album, this time they wanted to add some new elements, moods and variations in the music. I do not hear many differences, for what I hear is a common Astral Doors album with its winged lyrics, larger than life atmosphere and solid rocking, or it should point to a song like ‘Shores Of Solitude’ in which the band goes for a slightly different sound.
‘New Revelation’ kicks off in a heavy way, but in ‘Freedom War’ there is already room for more epic vocals. It is still tenable: Patrik is the son of Dio, we cannot ignore this, but the man has a wonderful voice anyway. It leaps to the eye that there are more sing-along choruses and that is why the sound of the band slightly moves in the direction of power metal. The hectic, victorious ‘Pentecostal Bound’ is followed by the first ballad they ever recorded, called ‘Bastard Son’. Nice one. The dark discoursed lyrics at the beginning and the end of ‘Waiting For The Master’ have a grand atmosphere. I cannot help it, but the joyful choirs in ‘Planet Earth’ remind me of ‘I Want Out’ (Helloween). Never mind, we just enjoy the skilful guitar leads and runs of Nordlund and Haglund and have a good time following the lyrics about kings and victories. Nothing wrong with that. This is an infectious, vigorous album that got a sure-fire mix again of Peter Tägtgren at the Abyss Studio. The band now prepares itself for their first headlining tour and in this quality they can be seen at the Biebob on October, 28th with Tyketto and Secret Sphere. Go and see!

Eerder dit jaar was zanger Patrik Johansson al te horen op ‘Emotional Coma’, de comebackplaat van Lion’s Share, maar de man bruist van energie want nu is er ook het vierde album (als we het tussendoortje, de ‘Raiders Of The Ark’ EP even niet meerekenen) van zijn voornaamste band Astral Doors. Die boert goed en dat had ik bij het debuut al voorspeld. De klassieke hardrock geïnspireerd door Black Sabbath, Dio en Rainbow wordt ook steeds met volle overtuiging gebracht door de astrale Zweden en de gevleugelde composities liggen makkelijk in het gehoor. Plus natuurlijk de meesterlijke vocalen van Patrik, die net als Dio klinkt.
Na het vorige album ‘Astralism’ kreeg Astral Doors het geweldige aanbod om twee maanden door Europa te toeren met Blind Guardian. Daar zette de band zijn beste beentje voor met als gevolg wederom een aanzienlijke uitbreiding van de fanbasis. Er was geen tijd om bij de pakken te gaan zitten, want vlak na deze tournee begon de solide band (nog steeds dezelfde bezetting als in het begin) de nummers voor ‘New Revelation’ te schrijven. Was ‘Astralism’ een erg gitaar georiënteerd album, ditmaal wilden ze enige nieuwe elementen, sferen en variaties aanbrengen in het geluid. Zulk een vaart is het niet gelopen, want wat ik hoor is een vertrouwd Astral Doors album met zijn gevleugelde teksten, larger than life uitstraling en lekker rockend, of het zou op ‘Shores Of Solitude’ moeten wijzen waar de band toch net iets anders voor de dag komt.
‘New Revelation’ trapt stevig af, maar in ‘Freedom War’ is al plaats voor wat meer epische zang. Het geldt nog steeds: Patrik is de zoon van Dio, daar kunnen we niet omheen, maar de man heeft natuurlijk een heerlijke stem. Wel valt het me op dat er meer refreinen zijn die uitnodigen tot meezingen en alzo schuift het geluid van de band ietwat op naar power metal. Het drukke zegevierende ‘Pentecostal Bound’ wordt gevolgd door de eerste ballade die men ooit opnam ‘Bastard Son’. Het gaat hen goed af. De donker voorgedragen tekst aan het begin en einde van ‘Waiting For The Master’ is erg sfeervol. Ik kan het niet helpen, maar de blije koortjes in ‘Planet Earth’ doen me erg aan ‘I Want Out’ (Helloween) denken. Ach wat, we genieten gewoon van het spetterende gitaarwerk van Nordlund en Haglund en leven mee met de glorieuze teksten over koningen en overwinningen. Niks mis mee. Dit is een aanstekelijk, energiek album dat ook weer een fantastische mix kreeg van Peter Tägtgren in de Abyss Studio. De band bereidt zich nu voor op hun eerste tour als headliner en in die hoedanigheid zijn ze op 28 oktober te zien in de Biebob, met Tyketto en Secret Sphere. Gaat dat zien!
