LAKE OF TEARS: Illwill

Lake Of Tears is inextricably bound up with the rise of dark metal in the nineties. Many bands were formed, inspired by Paradise Lost’s style on albums such as ‘Shades Of God’ and ‘Icon’. Swedish Lake Of Tears was one of them. Of course they got any criticism for that, but ‘Headstones’ for instance was a stunning album. In addition they always kept making very fine albums, although they never got the success they deserved and we could hardly catch the band live in our areas. They also split up for a while.
In the meantime they have developed a distinct sound one may call dark, melancholic music. Albums like ’Black Brick Road’ (2004) and ’Moons And Mushrooms’ (2007) still grandly pleased me and I am pretty sure that they will have found their way to fans of bands of their ilk such as Lacrimas Profundere or End Of Green. Now, after four year of silence, we have ‘Illwill’. It is an album you have to get used to, since it is straighter and heavier than its predecessors and more diverse as well. The main point of reference is the gravel-throated voice of Daniel Brennare, without any doubt. For the rest this album happens to be more riff orientated and keyboards are in the minority.
The up tempo ‘Floating In Darkness’ kicks off in familiar style, to be continued by some wandering through dungeons full of dark feelings. Title track ‘Illwill’ includes tight guitar skills, but above all it is ultimate melancholic and depressive. But this is an album that brims with contrasts and surprises. In ‘The Hating’ we still can hear some Paradise Lost alike guitars, but furthermore it is a real fast and heavy song of hate. Same goes for – a little bit later – the rebellious ‘Parasites’ with any punk aspirations. Personally I am not so fond of songs like that, but you cannot ignore they bring some life in the brewery and they emphasize the captivating beauty of the juicy sung ‘U.N.S.A.N.E.’ (dark glam rock with undercurrent tension) and the magnificent doom-like ‘House Of The Setting Sun’. On the other hand, ‘Behind The Green Door’ appears to be a catchy gothic rock track with low-pitched Sisters Of Mercy/Peter Steele vocals, the kind of vocals one can hear in above mentioned bands too. The powerful sung ‘Out Of Control’ has beautiful glissando guitars, while the last song ‘Midnight Madness’ holds another surprise. This is epic black metal with keyboards in Lake Of Tears’ style! In despite of any chameleon tendencies, Lake Of Tears wrote again a number of strong, new songs that instantly haunt me, that’s why we add this eighth studio album ‘Illwill’ with pleasure to our collection. The limited digipak includes three live songs. Recommended!

Lake Of Tears is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de opkomst van dark metal in de jaren negentig. Vele bands ontstonden toen, geïnspireerd door Paradise Lost’s stijl op albums als ‘Shades Of God’ en ‘Icon’ en het Zweedse Lake Of Tears was daar één van. Zij kregen daar natuurlijk wel enige kritiek op, maar bijvoorbeeld ‘Headstones’ was toch een dijk van een plaat. Bovendien zijn ze altijd albums blijven maken die best goed waren, al werd het grote succes nooit bereikt en kregen we de band amper live te zien in onze streken. Ze gingen ook een poos uit elkaar.
Ze hebben intussen een eigen stijl ontwikkeld die men kan omschrijven als donkere, melancholieke muziek. Albums als ‘Black Brick Road’ (2004) en ‘Moons And Mushrooms’ (2007) bevielen me erg en zullen ook wel hun weg gevonden hebben naar fans van bijvoorbeeld Lacrimas Profundere of End Of Green. Nu, na een stilte van vier jaar is er ‘Illwill’. Het is even wennen, want dit album is een pak harder dan de voorgangers en ook meer verscheiden. Een eerste herkenningspunt is natuurlijk de schuurpapieren stem van Daniel Brennare. Verder is het eerder riffgeoriënteerd en komen keyboards minder aan bod.
Het uptempo ‘Floating In Darkness’ opent in vertrouwde stijl, om dan meteen rond te dwalen in een kerker vol duistere gevoelens. Titeltrack ‘Illwill’ heeft namelijk wel strak gitaarwerk, maar is opperweemoedig en depressief. Dit is echter een album vol contrasten en verrassingen. In ‘The Hating’ horen we nog wel een gitaargeluid dat sterk aan Paradise Lost doet denken, maar verder is dit een snel en hard haatnummer. Ook van die aard is verderop het opstandige ‘Parasites’ met punkaspiraties. Persoonlijk ben ik niet zo gek van zulke tracks, maar ze brengen wel leven in de brouwerij en doen het smeuïg gezongen ‘U.N.S.A.N.E.’ (duistere glamrock met onderhuidse spanning) en het prachtige doomachtige ‘House Of The Setting Sun’ nog beter uitkomen. ‘Behind The Green Door’ is dan weer vlotte gothic rock met een lage Sisters Of Mercy/Peter Steele stem, waar bovenvermelde bands ook goed in zijn. Het krachtig gezongen ‘Out Of Control’ kent mooi glissando gitaarwerk, terwijl afsluiter ‘Midnight Madness’ een volgende verrassing inhoudt. Dit is epische black metal met keyboards op Lake Of Tears wijze. Ondanks enige kameleonneigingen heeft Lake Of Tears echter wel een aantal sterke, nieuwe songs geschreven die me meteen aanspreken, zodat we met plezier ook dit achtste studioalbum ‘Illwill’ aan onze collectie toevoegen. Het gelimiteerde digipak bevat drie live songs, een aanrader!
