ARKAN: Salam

In Summer 2008 we had our first encounter with ’Hilal’, the debut of Arkan. After his departure of The Old Dead Tree, drummer Foued Moukid focused on his own band. That one has the intention to amalgamate rigorous yet melodic death metal with ravishing, ethnic influences of the Maghreb countries. The musicians all live in Paris, but they are native of Algeria or Morocco. We rarely see this in our metal world. That’s why their approach instantly reminded me of Orphaned Land. And see what happened: in the meantime Arkan has toured with Orphaned Land and on this sophomore album ‘Salam’ (peace) one can hear Orphaned Land vocalist Kobi Farhi as guest singer in ‘Deus Vult’.
Right away, opener ‘Origins’ gives us a proper impression of what Arkan stands for. Sonorous acoustic sounds pass fluently into juicy death metal with the impressive grunts of Florent Jannier. Yet ‘Salam’ is much more than just a copy of their debut, because female vocalist Sarah Layssac – who already joined the band live – was recruited as permanent member. Her role is way much bigger on ‘Salam’ and that’s another reason why Arkan’s music comes a bit closer to the contemporary sound of Orphaned Land. Her chants are mostly very esoteric and dreamy, but also the melodic guitar solos in many songs are very beautiful. After the rather heavy ‘Inner Slaves’ we can hear how the compelling vocals of Kobi Farhi merge with the raucous growls of Florent in a captivating manner. With authentic instruments like derbouka, mandole, oûd and bendir they add loads of passages with enchanting sounds, but also ethnic percussion gets its place in songs like ‘Common Ground’ and the narrative ‘Amaloun Jadid II’. The entire album has a mysterious touch. The latter part of the album seems a kind of concept, with short intermezzos in between longer tracks. In general ‘Salam’ turns out more melodic than the debut, due to an increase of traditional instruments and female vocals. European fans will probably speak of oriental influences, more than having similarities with pure Maghreb music. The band worked together with producer Fredrik Nordström – same goes for the debut – and he has caught the warm, hearty touch of the music of this genuine band in a proper way, even in icy Sweden. Together with Orphaned Land, Arkan has the noble purpose to unite different minded people with metal. With a top notch product like ‘Salam’ they will surely succeed in that.

In de zomer van 2008 maakten we kennis met ’Hilal’, het debuut van Arkan. Na zijn vertrek uit The Old Dead Tree kon drummer Foued Moukid zich voortaan concentreren op zijn eigen band. Deze heeft de intentie om rigoureuze, maar melodieuze death metal te combineren met ravissante, etnische invloeden uit de Maghreb landen. De muzikanten wonen immers in Parijs, maar zijn allemaal van Algerijnse of Marokkaanse afkomst. In onze metalwereld komen we dit zelden tegen, vandaar dat hun aanpak me meteen deed denken aan Orphaned Land. En kijk, beide bands hebben intussen een aantal concerten samen gedaan en op het tweede album ‘Salam’ (betekent vrede) horen we Orphaned Land zanger Kobi Farhi in ‘Deus Vult’ als gastzanger.
‘Origins’ geeft ons meteen een goede indruk van waar Arkan voor staat. Heldere akoestische klanken gaan vloeiend over in smeuïge death metal met de indrukwekkende grunt van Florent Jannier. Toch is ‘Salam’ geen gewoon doorslagje van het debuut, want sindsdien is zangeres Sarah Layssac – die hen eerder al live bijstond – ingelijfd als permanent bandlid. Haar rol is op ‘Salam’ dan ook veel groter en zo komt de muziek van Arkan een stapje dichter bij wat Orphaned Land nu doet. Haar zang is meestal erg esoterisch en dromerig, maar ook de melodieuze gitaarsolo’s in meerdere songs zijn erg fraai. Na het vrij stevige ‘Inner Slaves’ kunnen we horen hoe de bezwerende zang van Kobi Farhi op beklijvende wijze samengaat met de ruwe grunts van Florent. Met authentieke instrumenten als derbouka, mandole, oûd en bendir voegt men heel wat passages met betoverend heldere klanken toe, maar ook etnische percussie krijgt zijn plaats in songs als ‘Common Ground’ en het narratieve ‘Amaloun Jadid II’. Het hele album heeft een mysterieus tintje. Het tweede deel van dit album lijkt wel een geheel, met korte intermezzo’s tussen langere songs. Als geheel is ‘Salam’ melodieuzer dan het debuut, vooral door de vermeerdering van inheemse instrumenten en vrouwenzang. Europese fans zullen ook eerder spreken van oriëntaalse invloeden, dan van pure Maghreb muziek. De band werkte – net als op het debuut – samen met producer Fredrik Nordström en hij wist de warmte van de muziek van deze integere band zelfs in het koude Zweden te behouden. Samen met Orphaned Land stelt Arkan als nobel doel om verschillende volkeren te verenigen door metal en met een kwaliteitsproduct als ‘Salam’ moet hen dat zeker lukken.
