SONS OF SEASONS: Magnisphyricon

In 2007 Oliver Palotai – mainly known as keyboardist of Kamelot – took the decision to stand on his own feet as well. Sons Of Seasons came into being with displeased musicians of Blaze Bayley’s band and vocalist Henning Basse (also in Metalium at that time). The debut album ‘Gods Of Vermin’ proved that Oliver succeeded in creating an engrossing blend of metal, classical music and a pinch of jazz. The album was hardly out when the band did a few gigs in our areas. Since then they have been playing at many international festivals. The first European tour took place under the wings of Epica and that’s no wonder, since Simone Simons happens to be the wife of Oliver. She can also be heard on this album.
Early 2010 they started working on new material and now the sophomore album ‘Magnisphyricon’ is ready, created with new guitarist Pepe Pierez. This is even more impressive than their debut. Henning Basse has improved again, he really rules in vocals on this album. I was not really fond of his vocals in Metalium, but what he does here is nothing but staggering. There’s a lot more passion, depth and pathos in his voice and more than once it appears that he even can manage raucous growls. There is not that much changed on the musical spectrum. ‘Magnisphyricon’ is a bit heavier than its predecessor, but still vocals (and music) often remind me of Kamelot.
This is a massive lump of multilayered and sometimes hectic music, since the album has a length of sixty-six minutes. Really value for money! The glorified intro is already very imposing: very symphonic with momentous choirs and piano. That same classical piano opens ‘Bubonic Waltz’, but when fast, sturdy guitars join in it sounds really heavy. An organ spot and a guitar solo compete for the majority of attention. Background vocals are present too. And what a dynamic double bass attacks in ‘Soul Symmetry’! This band sounds like a bell! ‘Sanctuary’ opens with bass and jazzy piano. String and orchestral arrangements fill up every hole. In this song one can hear Simone Simons, although there is a bit vocals of Henning as well. While the music always maintains its Kamelot-alike tenseness and bombast, regaled with loads of keyboard and guitar virtuosity, one may call ‘Casus Belli I: Guilt’s Mirror’ really catchy. Here we also hear a first savage grunt. Vocals in the beginning of ‘Into The Void’ are nearly sacral or pontifical. A beautiful, sweeping solo leads towards a wilder part. There’s no need in mentioning that this album happens to be rather highfaluting. ‘A Nightmare’s Gospel’ leaps to the eye with its partly drawling vocals, while ‘Tales Of Greed’ is really aggressive, including many grunts. The sensitive side pops up again in the next songs. The last track ‘Yesteryears’ is a marvellous sung piano-ballad and ‘1413’ flirts a bit with oriental melody lines. What a breathtaking experience! If you have a liking for symphonic metal, this is highly recommended!

In 2007 nam Oliver Palotai, meest bekend als toetsenist in Kamelot, het besluit om ook op eigen benen te staan. Sons Of Seasons werd in het leven geroepen met misnoegde muzikanten uit de band van Blaze Bayley en Henning Basse (toen nog in Metalium) als zanger. Het debuut ‘Gods Of Vermin’ toonde aan dat Oliver er aardig in slaagde om een boeiende mix van metal, klassieke muziek en een snuifje jazz te maken. Het album was amper uit of de band was al in onze streken live te zien. Van dan af hebben ze acte de présence gegeven op talrijke festivals. De eerste Europese tournee deden ze onder de vleugels van Epica en dat is natuurlijk niet verwonderlijk, want Simone Simons is de vrouw van Oliver. Zij is ook weer te horen op dit album trouwens.
Begin 2010 begon men nieuw materiaal te schrijven en nu ligt het tweede album ‘Magnisphyricon’ voor ons klaar, met als enige nieuweling gitarist Pepe Pierez. Dit is nog indrukwekkender dan het debuut. Henning Basse is nu helemaal open gebloeid als zanger. Bij Metalium was ik niet bijster onder de indruk van zijn zangcapaciteiten, maar wat de man hier presteert is ronduit verbazingwekkend. Er ligt veel meer gevoel, diepte en pathos in zijn stem en meermaals blijkt dat hij ook nog ruw uit de bol kan gaan in semi-grunts. Aan het muzikale palet is niet veel veranderd. ‘Magnisphyricon’ is wel harder dan zijn voorganger, maar nog steeds doet de zang (en de muziek) me sterk aan Kamelot denken.
Het is een hele brok veelgelaagde en soms drukke muziek, want het album duurt zesenzestig minuten. Waar voor je geld. De veredelde intro is al imposant: erg simfonisch met gewichtige koorzang en piano. Die klassieke piano opent ook ‘Bubonic Waltz’, maar wanneer de snelle, harde gitaren invallen klinkt dit behoorlijk heftig. Een orgelspot en een gitaarsolo wedijveren voor de meeste aandacht. De achtergrondzang is ook present. En wat een dynamische dubbele baswerk in ‘Soul Symmetry’! Deze band heeft een zwaar geluid. ‘Sanctuary’ opent met bas en jazzy piano. Strijkers en orkestrale arrangementen smeren de boel dicht. In dit nummer horen we Simone Simons, al is er ook wat repliek van Henning. Terwijl de muziek steeds de geladenheid van een Kamelot blijft hebben, verfraaid door veel toetsen- en gitaarvirtuositeit, kunnen we ‘Casus Belli I: Guilt’s Mirror’ toch wel erg catchy noemen. We horen ook een eerste wilde grunt. De zang in het begin van ‘Into The Void’ kan men bijna gewijd of sacraal noemen. Een mooie, slepende solo leidt naar een wilder stuk. Het hoeft amper vermeld te worden dat dit album vrij bombastisch klinkt. ‘A Nightmare’s Gospel’ valt op door deels lijzige zang, terwijl ‘Tales Of Greed’ echt peper in de reet heeft en veel ruwe grunts bevat. De gevoelige kant komt boven in de volgende nummers, waarvan het laatste ‘Yesteryears’ een prachtig gezongen pianoballad is en ‘1413’ een beetje flirt met oriëntaalse melodielijnen. Wat een adembenemende prestatie! Ben je te vinden voor symfonische metal dan is dit warm, nee heel warm aanbevolen!
