SCAR OF THE SUN: A Series Of Unfortunate Concurrencies

This is an engrossing story with an excellent debut album as result. In the hectic metropolis of London, three Greeks once (in 2004) gathered to create the foundation of Scar Of The Sun. Thus the birth of an atmospheric dark metal band with noticeable influences of Paradise Lost came into being. Vocalist Terry Nikas has Nick Holmes as lightened paradigm, that’s obvious, his timbre and phrasing are very akin to the one of the phlegmatic Englishman. However, Scar Of The Sun marking as just a simple copycat of Paradise Lost would be short-sighted, since they are doing a great job on ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Concurrencies’.
The creation of this album was preceded by numerous live gigs and step-by-step achievements. Now that the band members have Athens again as location, they could build up a proper fan base in renowned clubs over there as support act of bands like Pain Of Salvation, Lake Of Tears and later even Dark Tranquillity and Paradise Lost. The band has a kind of do it yourself approach for recordings, mainly helped by original member Stamos Koliousis (of Mencea fame), but they incorporated Canadian Rhys Fulber for the mix and Greg Reely for mastering. It cannot be coincidence that these maestros are known for their work with Paradise Lost, Fear Factory and Machine Head. A deal with Italian Scarlet Records label finally opened the way to a worldwide distribution.
The ten self-written compositions on ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Concurrencies’ are regaled with some guest appearances. In this case no shallow exposure with any famous icons, but it naturally turned out that way, as a result of the band’s contacts through the years. The modern gothic metal with clean male vocals and keyboard parts is relished with a guitar solo of Marios Iliopoulos of Nightrage in the first track ‘Disponsable’. It leaps to the eye due to its signature style and also because of an abrupt ending of the song. For the catchy ‘Swansong Of Senses’ they have shot a video clip in the meantime and no less a person than Bob Katsionis (Firewind – he plays keyboards on ‘8th Ocean Dried’) and their former drummer are the creators of this vigorous registration. One of the most remarkable guest appearances is the one of Dark Tranquillity vocalist Mikael Stanne in ‘Ode To A Failure’. His raucous, gravel-throated aggression is nicely in contrast with the clean, slightly static clean chants of Terry. While the foundation of the music always remains ponderous riffs with a doom edge and melancholy, there are always surprising extras, like the orchestral arrangements of Septicflesh eminence Chris Antoniou and the esoteric, empyrean chants of a Leah Randi in the bass driven ‘Burn The Memory’. Like mentioned before the spirit of Paradise Lost is always near, but the amazing ‘A Pause In The Disaster’ is deliciously dark and in the last tracks they go for any fetching Amon Amarth-alike riffing for a change. That’s why fetching heaviness goes hand in hand with solemn spoken passages in ‘I Lost’. The only remark I can think of is that the lengthier tracks are not always focused to remain exciting, but for the rest this debut is all great! Proper balance between atmosphere and heaviness, making me long for another spin. Gothic/doom with death metal injection done to a turn, averse to any shallow trends!

Dit is een boeiend verhaal met een uitstekend debuut tot gevolg. In de krioelende metropool Londen staken ooit (in 2004) drie Grieken de koppen bij elkaar om de basis te leggen voor Scar Of The Sun. Dat resulteerde in een atmosferische dark metal band waar de invloeden van Paradise Lost erg merkbaar zijn. Zanger Terry Nikas heeft duidelijk Nick Holmes als grote voorbeeld, zijn stemtimbre en frasering sluiten nauw aan bij dat van de flegmatieke Engelsman. Scar Of The Sun afdoen als een simpele kopie van Paradise Lost zou anderzijds ook bijzonder kortzichtig zijn, want ze komen bijzonder sterk over op dit debuut ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Concurrencies’.
Daar gingen heel wat overwinningen op live gebied en een stap voor stap evolutie aan vooraf. Nu de bandleden Athene terug als uitvalsbasis hebben, konden zij daar in gerenommeerde clubs zieltjes winnen en dat gebeurde als support van bands als Pain Of Salvation, Lake Of Tears en later zelfs Dark Tranquillity en Paradise Lost. Voor de opnamen hield het vijftal veel in eigen handen, vooral geholpen door oorspronkelijk lid Stamos Koliousis die we ook van Mencea kennen, maar ze wisten wel de Canadees Rhys Fulber te strikken voor de mix en Greg Reely voor de mastering. Niet toevallig zijn deze kanjers bekend voor hun werk voor bands als Paradise Lost, Fear Factory en Machine Head. Een deal met het Italiaanse Scarlet Records opende tenslotte de weg naar een wereldwijde distributie.
De tien eigen composities op ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Concurrencies’ worden soms extra luister bijgezet door enkele gastbijdragen. In dit geval is het niet oppervlakkig pochen met enkele bekende iconen, maar blijkt dit spontaan voortgesproten uit de contacten die de band opgebouwd heeft. De moderne gotische metal met cleane zang en keyboardpartijen wordt in het eerste nummer ‘Disponsable’ al verfraaid door een gitaarsolo van Marios Iliopoulos van Nightrage. Deze valt op door zijn aparte stijl en ook wel een abrupt einde van de song. Voor het aanstekelijke ‘Swansong Of Senses’ heeft men inmiddels een videoclip gemaakt en niemand minder dan Bob Katsionis (Firewind - hij speelt ook alle keyboards in ‘8th Ocean Dried’) en hun voormalige drummer zijn de scheppers van deze energieke registratie. Eén van de meest typerende gastbijdragen is die van Dark Tranquillity zanger Mikael Stanne in ‘Ode To A Failure’. Zijn ruwe, rasperige agressiviteit vormt een mooi contrast met de cleane, vrij statische zang van Terry. Terwijl de basis van de muziek zinderende riffs met een doom randje en melancholie blijven, zijn er telkens verrassende extra’s, zoals de orkestrale arrangementen in ‘Gravity’ door Septicflesh wonder Chris Antoniou en de esoterische, verheven zang van ene Leah Randi in het basgerichte ‘Burn The Memory’. Zoals vermeld is de geest van Paradise Lost nooit ver weg, maar het knappe ‘A Pause In The Disaster’ is heerlijk duister en in de laatste tracks gooit men er enkele vinnige op Amon Amarth geënte riffs tegenaan, zodat aanstekelijkheid hand in hand gaat met plechtig gesproken fragmenten in ‘I Lost’. De enige opmerking die ik wil plaatsen is dat men in de twee extra lange nummers niet altijd even boeiend blijft, maar verder is dit een debuut dat kan tellen! De juiste proporties sfeer en pittigheid doen me telkens weer naar een volgende luisterbeurt verlangen. Gothic/doom met death metal injectie zoals het hoort, wars van oppervlakkige trends!
