LEGIO MORTIS: The Human Creation And The Devil's Contribution

We find ourselves in the underground scene right here and that’s where they are going to stay I think. For this fourth album, Legio Mortis got a deal with MDD, but I expected so much more from them: an Italian name (refinement), a contract (somebody must have been interested, hehe) and the announcement that this should be dark metal with death influences. Unfortunately things did not work out. After the intro with a siren, Legio Mortis appears to be a band where accelerations go in the direction of black metal (but not heavy enough) and a vocalist that surely lacks charisma. During the first tracks we can still appreciate this amalgamates of creepy death growls and invigorated instrumental background, yet soon it goes from bad to worse. Thus ‘Pity The Sadness’ from Paradise Lost is transferred to a mediocre track and black metal accelerations that initially please me just turn into a cheap gimmick by looming up in every song. Broad keyboard pads are also present in every song, but they do not add something essential. Well, they succeeded in bringing Liv Kristine before the mike in one song, called ‘Life Denied’, but sorry, this is just mellifluent with any guitar licks that remind once again of Paradise Lost. Some songs tend to take a turn to positive ways, but the mediocre chants of Mario ‘Popp’ Tharator just lead to nowhere. Those blackish invigorations make me think it is okay, but, frankly speaking, this is a weak release.

We bevinden ons hier in de underground en daar zullen ze ook blijven vrees ik. Voor dit vierde album is Legio Mortis weliswaar getekend door MDD, maar ik had er veel meer van verwacht: een Italiaanse naam (verfijning), een contract (iemand is geïnteresseerd) en de melding dat dit dark metal met death invloeden was. Helaas komen we er vrij bekaaid van af. Na de intro met sirene ontpopt Legio Mortis zich tot een band waar de acceleraties richting black metal gaan (maar niet heavy genoeg) en een zanger die echt wel zwak is. Tijdens de eerste songs kunnen we dit amalgaam van een lage doodsrochel met voortvarende instrumentale achterban nog wel trekken, maar helaas gaat het van kwaad tot erger. Zo wordt ‘Pity The Sadness’ van Paradise Lost getransformeerd tot een middelmatige track en worden de black acceleraties die me aanvankelijk wel bevallen een gimmick die in elk nummer voorkomen. Brede toetsenpartijen zijn aanwezig in elk nummer, maar ze dragen niets wezenlijks bij. Men heeft het dan ook nog gepresteerd om Liv Kristine in ‘Life Denied’ voor de microfoon te halen. Sorry, maar dit is gewoon melig met enkele gitaar licks die ook alweer terug grijpen naar Paradise Lost. Sommige songs lijken de goede kant uit te gaan, maar de halfbakken zang van Mario ‘Popp’ Tharator leidt tot niets. De blackish opflakkeringen doen me telkens even opveren, maar eerlijk gezegd is dit een zwakke release.
