U.D.O.: REV-Raptor

Preceeded by the EP/single ‘Leatherhead’, late May the new studio album of Udo Dirkschneider’s U.D.O. was released. Of course there is no need in introducing this man, since he has been a monument of German heavy metal since a long time. Initially as front man of Accept, from 1987 on with U.D.O. From 1992 till 1997 there was a temporary reunion with Accept, but nowadays Udo feels totally relaxed at the side of bloodbrother/axeman Stefan Kaufmann.
‘Rev-Raptor’ is the successor of the 2009 released ‘Dominator’ and I do have the impression that it is an even stronger album. There is more variegation, also in vocals. Udo does not scream constantly anymore, but he wanders through some lower ranges from time to time and that results in a better product. On the other side, guitar soloing of Kaufmann and Igor Gianola remains a guarantee for some proper ear candy. The lower vocals already leaps to the eye in the single ‘Leatherhead’ (do watch the video!) and in the semi ballad ‘I Give As Good As I Get’ they show their sensitive side without getting too mellifluent. Indeed, there are choruses to sing along (in the up-tempo ‘Dr. Death’ and the cry for victory ‘True Born Winners’); oh yes there are fast stomping tracks (‘Terrorvision’ and ‘Motor-Borg’). But the sneaky sung ‘Rock ‘N Roll Soldiers’ has momentum and the creepy sung ‘Underworld’ stands out. During the occluding ‘Days Of Hope And Glory’ I see a huge German crowd waving their hands. Okay, of course you should not expect renewal or surprises with U.D.O., but that’s beside the point. One thing they can guarantee: proper German solid steel.

Voorafgegaan door de ep/single ‘Leatherhead’ verschijnt eind mei het nieuwe studioalbum van Udo Dirkscheider’s band U.D.O. Natuurlijk hoeven we de man niet meer voor te stellen, want hij is al jaren een monument in de Duitse heavy metal scène. Eerst als frontman van Accept, sinds 1987 met U.D.O. Er was van 1992 tot 1997 wel een tijdelijke terugkeer naar Accept, maar nu voelt hij zich als een vis in het water aan de zijde van gitarist Stefan Kaufmann.
‘Rev-Raptor’ is de opvolger van het in 2009 uitgekomen ‘Dominator’ en ik vind dit zelfs nog een sterker album. Er is meer verscheidenheid, ook in de zang. Udo schreeuwt niet meer constant, maar zoekt ook de lagere regionen op en dat komt het resultaat zeker ten goede. Ook is het nog steeds genieten geblazen van de prachtige solo’s van Kaufmann en Igor Gianola. Dat lager zingen komt al tot uiting in de single ‘Leatherhead’ (bekijk ook de video!) en in de semi-ballad ‘I Give As Good As I Get’ komt men gevoelig uit de hoek zonder melig te zijn. O ja, er zijn meezingrefreinen (in het uptempo ‘Dr. Death’ en het overwinningslied ‘True Born Winners’), en ja, er zijn snelle, stompende tracks (‘Terrorvision’ en ‘Motor-Borg’). Maar het sluipend gezongen, stuwende ‘Rock ’N Roll Soldiers’ is sterk en het omfloerst gezongen ‘Underworld’ eveneens. Bij de afsluiter ‘Days Of Hope And Glory’ zie ik een Duitse zwaaiende massa voor me. Natuurlijk hoef je bij U.D.O. niet aan te kloppen voor vernieuwing of verrassingen, maar dat is totaal naast de kwestie. Wat hij wel garandeert is Duitse degelijkheid.
