TYR: The Lay Of Thrym

Tyr remains a Viking metal band with a very idiosyncratic sound: clean vocals of Heri Joensen, his typical guitar melodies with partly folky, partly melancholic touch and heroic, fetching choruses. Now that we have arrived at their sixth studio album ‘The Lay Of Thrym’, the formula may be well-known. Since Heri can ventilate his preferences for progressive music in his side project Heljareyga, Tyr continues the tendency of creating more straight forward songs again. This development was already noticeable on their previous album ‘By The Light Of The Northern Star’, released two years ago.
Lyric-wise Joensen once again found inspiration in the inexhaustible amount of legends in Norse mythology. This time the story of King Thrym is featured; he who dared to steal Thor’s hammer and I bet he had no good intentions with it. Fortunately we all know that you cannot mess around with Thor and he succeeded - garbed as Freya – in getting back the hammer from the ice giants. Diverting sagas when you dive deeper into the matter, that’s true, but what about the musical achievements on ‘The Lay Of Thrym’? Well, many up-tempo songs this time. You notice that Tyr happens to be a band with the intention of world-wide touring again. Songs like ‘Flames Of The Free’ and ‘Shadow Of The Swastika’ (about the kind of cramped attitude of some people when talking about being proud on their roots) are stamping hymns with marvellous guitar skills. ‘Take Your Tyrant’ and ‘Hall Of Freedom’ even go one step further in their catchiness and instantly invite to sing along.
But… there is enough variegation on the album. The beautiful, sensitive ‘Evening Star’ for instance; obviously inspired by the ballads of Metallica, even the guitar solo. ‘Konning Hans’ is also rather quiet and it smoothly brings us with a couple of pure authentic songs on this album. This song is sung in Danish and the ultimate tight ‘Ellindur Bondi A Jadri’ is in their vernacular language. They remain the proud ambassadors of the windy Faeroe Islands. The latest track is my personal favourite. ‘The Lay Of Thrym’, the title track, reminds me a bit of their former stunner ‘Regin Smidur’, due to the melancholic, echoing guitar sounds. This is texture-wise a much more engrossing song than the simple sing along hymns, in my opinion. But I bet that visitors of Pagan fest or Heidenfest will not agree with that, since they want an exuberant party and of course, then inciting tunes such as ‘Fields Of The Fallen’ or the straight forward ‘Nine Worlds Of Lore’ may suit more. Conclusion: a strong Tyr album that will please every fan.

Tyr blijft een Viking metal band met een erg herkenbaar geluid: de heldere zang van Heri Joensen, zijn typische gitaarmelodieën met deels folky, deels weemoedige inslag en de heroïsche, aanstekelijke refreinen. Nu we met ‘The Lay Of Thrym’ bij het zesde studioalbum aanbeland zijn, mag de formule gekend zijn. Sinds Heri zijn voorkeuren voor progressieve muziek vrij kan botvieren in zijproject Heljareyga, zet Tyr de tendens naar simpelere songs verder. Die ontwikkeling deed zich al voor op het vorige album ‘By The Light Of The Northern Star’ dat twee jaar geleden uitkwam.
Tekstueel zocht Joensen zijn inspiratie wederom in de onuitputtelijke legenden uit de Noordse mythologie. Nu staat het verhaal van koning Thrym centraal; hij die de hamer van Thor stal en daar vast niet veel goeds mee van plan was. Gelukkig weten we dat er met Thor niet te spotten viel en hij kon – verkleed als Freya – de hamer terug bemachtigen van de ijsreuzen. Leuke verhalen natuurlijk, wanneer je je er even in verdiept, maar wat heeft ‘The Lay Of Thrym’ muzikaal voor ons in petto? Veel up-tempo songs deze keer. Je merkt dat er een band bezig is die songs schrijft met het oog op wereldwijd toeren. Songs als ‘Flames Of The Free’ en ‘Shadow Of The Swastika’ (over de nog steeds verkrampte houding van sommige mensen wanneer men zegt trots te zijn op zijn eigen roots) zijn stampende hymnen met uitstekend gitaarwerk. ‘Take Your Tyrant’ en ‘Hall Of Freedom’ gaan zelfs nog een stapje verder in hun aanstekelijkheid en nodigen meteen uit tot meebrullen.
Maar… er is genoeg afwisseling. Het mooie, gevoelige ‘Evening Star’ bijvoorbeeld, dat duidelijk geïnspireerd is door de ballads van Metallica, zelfs de gitaarsolo. ‘Konning Hans’ is ook vrij rustig en doet ons meteen bij het blokje pure authenticiteit op dit album belanden. Dit nummer is in het Deens en het Spartaans strakke ‘Ellindur Bondi A Jadri’ is in de moedertaal. Zo blijven ze de trotse ambassadeurs van de winderige Faeröer Eilanden. Het laatste nummer is mijn persoonlijke favoriet. ‘The Lay Of Thrym’, het titelnummer doet door zijn weemoedige, nazinderende gitaarklanken wat aan de vroegere kraker ‘Regin Smidur’ denken en vind ik persoonlijk qua opbouw ook een stuk boeiender dan de meezingers. Maar daar zullen de bezoekers van Paganfest of Heidenfest het vast niet mee eens zijn, want zij willen een uitgelaten feestje en wat is er dan meer geschikt dan uitnodigende deunen als ‘Fields Of The Fallen’ of het rechttoe rechtaan ‘Nine Worlds Of Lore’. Conclusie: een sterk Tyr album dat de fans tevreden zal stellen.
