ALCEST: Le Secret

At this very moment, Alcest tours through Europe in good company (with Primordial and While Heaven Wept), but it involves a re-release of their first MCD ‘Le Secret’. The original recordings took place in January 2005, but moving spirit Neige could realize his dream of many years now that he was able to rerecord those two extensive tracks. The thousand copies, released in 2005, were soon sold out; thus this re-release with different artwork happens to be justified. In addition you get the original versions as well, that’s why this MCD has a length of fifty-four minutes.
‘Le Secret’ includes two tracks of thirteen minutes each. The title track quiescently glides through the room with thoughtful acoustic guitars. After three minutes heavier guitars join in, very compelling and accompanied by hazy, mysterious vocals. Thirteen minutes long, Neige leads us through the otherworldly experiences of his early youth on a bed of esoteric sounds. The last two minutes are acoustic again, with whisperings. The second track ‘Elevation’ is heavier. After a few minutes heavenly, atmospheric sounds, Alcest passes into epic black metal. The screams remind me a bit of early In The Woods. The leading melodies are very melancholic, sometimes a bit euphoric as well. There is a break with acoustic guitars and melodious soloing.
Both compositions laid the foundation for all future works of Alcest, reflected on albums like ‘Souvenirs D’Un Autre Monde’ (2007) and ‘Ecailles De Lune’ (2010). That’s why they are essential to have a complete vision on the artist Neige. Beautiful, dreamy music from another world, a world fine to wander through.

Momenteel toert Alcest in goed gezelschap (met Primordial en While Heaven Wept) door Europa, maar dit gaat gepaard met een heruitgave van hun eerste mini-cd ‘Le Secret’. De originele opnamen vonden plaats in januari 2005, maar voor hoofdfiguur Neige ging een droom in vervulling nu hij de twee lange tracks opnieuw kon opnemen. Destijds waren de duizend exemplaren al vlug uitverkocht; dus is deze heruitgave met verschillend artwork gerechtvaardigd. Bovendien krijg je er ook nog de originele versies bij, zodat deze mini-cd toch nog vierenvijftig minuten duurt.
‘Le Secret’ bestaat uit twee tracks van elk zo’n dertien minuten lang. Het titelnummer glijdt rustig de kamer binnen met bedachtzame akoestische gitaarklanken. Na drie minuten vallen hardere gitaren slepend in, vergezeld van onduidelijke, geheimzinnige zang. Dertien minuten lang leidt Neige ons met esoterische klanken doorheen de onaardse ervaringen uit zijn prille jeugd. De laatste twee minuten zijn terug akoestisch, met fluisterzang. Het tweede nummer ‘Elevation’ is harder. Na enkele minuten hemelse, atmosferische muziek gaat Alcest over in epische black metal. De screams doen me wel wat denken aan de beginperiode van In The Woods. De leidende melodieën zijn erg weemoedig, maar ook een beetje euforisch. Er is een breekpunt met akoestische gitaren en melodieus solowerk.
Beide composities legden de basis voor al het verdere werk van Alcest, dat gereflecteerd werd op de albums ‘Souvenirs D’Un Autre Monde’ (2007) en ‘Ecailles De Lune’ (2010) en zijn essentieel om een volledige visie op de artiest Neige te verkrijgen. Mooie, dromerige muziek uit een andere wereld waar het goed toeven is.
