STEVE HACKETT: Live Rails

Steve Hackett, once guitarist of Genesis during their heydays with Peter Gabriel, has also built up a very extensive catalogue of his own after his departure from the theatrical act number 1. Even John Lennon once said that ‘Selling England By The Pound’ was his favourite album. On that milestone album one can find the magnificent classic ‘Firth Of Fifth’ as well, with maybe the most captivating, compelling solo of Hackett. Several live albums has been released before ‘Live Rails’, but the new thing is that we can hear new material on it, coming from his latest studio album ‘Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth’ and that recent album surprised me in a positive way in 2009.
The recordings of this double album ‘Live Rails’ took place during the latest tour in support of that album and that’s why we can enjoy brilliant versions of ‘Fire On The Moon’, the marvellous ‘Emerald And Ash’, ‘Ghost In The Glass’ and ‘Tubehead’. The band supporting Hackett is mainly the same as on this record. The second disc takes a dive into the past (mainly Genesis tracks, but also songs from Hackett’s early solo work, like ‘Spectral Mornings’). I have to admit that ‘Firth Of Fifth’, ‘Los Endos’ and ‘Clocks’ still bring me to tears, due to the beautiful, emotive guitar skills of Hackett. They are preceded by a compelling choice from the present, represented by ‘Sleepers’ and ‘Still Waters’. This is an album you listen to in one time, even if it includes two discs. Genesis was honoured with a star at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2010 (not earlier?). Well, that’s a honour for an English band in the US.

Steve Hackett, ooit gitarist van Genesis tijdens hun hoogtijdagen met Peter Gabriel, heeft ook een erg uitgebreide catalogus opgebouwd na zijn vertrek uit de theatrale act nummer 1. Zelfs John Lennon zei ooit dat ‘Selling England By The Pound’ zijn favoriete album was en daarop prijkt dan ook de klassieker ‘Firth Of Fifth’ met misschien wel Hackett’s meest aangrijpende gitaarsolo. Meerdere live albums zijn voorafgegaan aan dit ‘Live Rails’, maar nieuw is dat we ook materiaal horen van het laatste studioalbum ‘Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth’ dat ook mij in positieve zin verraste.
De opnamen van het dubbelalbum ‘Live Rails’ gebeurden tijdens de laatste tournee voor dat album en dus kunnen we genieten van schitterende versies van ‘Fire On The Moon’, het prachtige ‘Emerald And Ash’, ‘Ghost In The Glass’ en ‘Tubehead’. Ook de band die Hackett bijstond is grotendeels hetzelfde als op dat album. Het tweede schijfje neemt een duik in het verleden (voornamelijk Genesis tracks, maar ook van Hackett’s vroege solowerk, zoals ‘Spectral Mornings’). Het dient gezegd dat ‘Firth Of Fifth’, ‘Los Endos’ en ‘Clocks’ nog steeds tranen in de ogen toveren door het prachtige, gevoelige gitaarwerk van Hackett. Ze worden vooraf gegaan door een beklijvend streepje heden in de vorm van ‘Sleepers’ en ‘Still Waters’. Dit is een album dat je in één ruk uit luistert, ook al bestaat het uit twee schijven. Genesis kreeg in maart 2010 (dan pas?) terecht een ster in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Als Engelse band in de VS een prestatie!
