Not only Moonspell entered the studio recently to re-record a couple of old songs, also Sodom decided that it was time to revitalize the songs of the ‘In The Sign Of Evil’ EP. Because it had to become a full-length album in 1984 style, seven songs were added, though you cannot see them as real bonus tracks, since they are considered as never finished/released songs that should have fulfilled the album in 1984.
Diehard fans of the first era should not worry that the sound has lost its charm due to modern recording tricks: it really sounds like it was 1984, raucous and quite faint, underground thrash with the screeching vocals of Tom Angelripper on top. To complete the old-time image, Angelripper gathered the musicians of the 1984 line-up around him: guitarist Josef “Peppi†Dominic (AKA Grave Violator) and drummer Chris Dudek (AKA Witchhunter). It must have been a jolly meeting full of remembrance.
The original EP sold more than 150.000 copies worldwide. This new ‘The Final Sign Of Evil’ was produced by Sodom’s webmaster Toto who watched out for not too many modern changes. And that is how you get an album that will appeal to the very early thrashers maybe, but nothing more. I prefer the nowadays Sodom with their 2006 self-titled album. Hence my score is strictly subjective.

Niet alleen Moonspell dook de afgelopen maanden de studio in om een aantal oude nummers terug op te nemen, ook Sodom vond dat de nummers van de ep ‘In The Sign Of Evil’ toe waren aan een opknapbeurt. Omdat dit een volledig album in 1984 stijl moest worden werden er zeven nummers aan toegevoegd, maar deze moet men niet zien als bonustracks, maar als nooit voltooide nummers die destijds van de ep een album hadden moeten maken.
De fans van het eerste uur hoeven niet bezorgd te zijn dat het geluid door de hedendaagse heropname aan charme heeft ingeboet: het klinkt erg 1984, rauw en vrij dof, blikkendozenthrash met het krassende stemgeluid van Tom Angelripper er boven op. Om het plaatje compleet te maken verzamelde Angelripper terug de muzikanten van de toenmalige bezetting om zich heen: gitarist Josef “Peppi†Dominic (AKA Grave Violator) en drummer Chris Dudek (AKA Witchhunter). Het zal daar herinneringen ophalen troef geweest zijn!

En zo krijg je dan een album waar de thrashers van het eerste uur erg blij mee zullen zijn, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Geef mij maar de huidige Sodom van het in 2006 verschenen titelloze album. Mijn quotering is dan ook louter subjectief.
