MEKONG DELTA: Lurking Fear

Reunions of eighties metal bands are in vogue, with another line-up or not. Mekong Delta entered the scene in 1987 with ‘Mekong Delta’ and ‘The Music Of Erich Zann’ (1988), two albums filled with bravado skills of high level technical thrash metal, raging by in a dizzy speed. The band used pseudonyms for a long time, but bass player/guitarist Ralph Hubert can we see as the moving spirit. The band split in 1997, but is active again since 2005 and ‘Lurking Fear’ is their first new material after the reunion.
Except Ralph Hubert one can find in the nowadays line-up guitarist Peter Lake (a.o. Theory In Practice), the myriapod Uli Kusch behind the drums (ex-Helloween, ex-Masterplan, Ride The Sky and many more bands) and vocalist Leszek (Leo) Szpigiel. ‘Lurking Fear’ is an exhausting and confusing experience. You can hear that we are dealing with top notch musicians, but some of the songs are very incoherent and nerve-racking. That even increases with the high-pitched thin vocals. Think of a weak hybridization of King Diamond and Rob Halford. The guitar skills on the album – and especially the soloing – are really making you flabbergasted and give some nice moments. This nearly progressive guitar approach is best showcased in the instrumental parts and fortunately there are many.
The admiration for classical music of Ralph Hubert can be heard in the dramatic, and sometimes cinematic, instrumental gems ‘Allegro Furioso’ (Dream Theater is very catchy compared to this), ‘Moderato’ and the hectic ‘Allegro’ that occludes the album. They are all based on a classic piece. Vocals, compositions and even the production could have been better. I see this album more as a record for fans of ultra intricate progressive music than appealing to thrash fans. But they first have to check if they like the vocals. The limited edition includes a DVD with a concert in Frankfurt in 1991.

Reünies van metal bands uit de jaren tachtig zijn schering en inslag, al dan niet in een gewijzigde bezetting. Mekong Delta liet voor het eerst van zich horen in 1987 met ‘Mekong Delta’ en ‘The Music Of Erich Zann’ (1988), twee albums vol bravourestukjes technisch hoogstaande thrash metal die aan een duizelingwekkende vaart aan je voorbij raasde. De band heeft lang gebruik gemaakt van pseudoniemen, maar bassist/gitarist Ralph Hubert kunnen we als de bezieler beschouwen. De band ging in 1997 uit elkaar, maar is vanaf 2005 terug actief en dit ‘Lurking Fear’ is hun eerste nieuw materiaal na de reünie.
Behalve Ralph Hubert vinden we in de huidige bezetting gitarist Peter Lake (o.a. Theory In Practice), de duizendpoot Uli Kusch achter de drums (ex-Helloween, ex-Masterplan, Ride The Sky en vele andere bands) en zanger Leszek (Leo) Szpigiel. ‘Lurking Fear’ is een vermoeiende en verwarrende zit. Je hoort dat hier klassemuzikanten aan het werk zijn, maar sommige nummers zijn erg onsamenhangend en zenuwslopend. Dat wordt nog versterkt door de hoge, iele zang. Denk aan een zwakke kruising tussen King Diamond en Rob Halford. Het gitaarwerk op dit album – en dan in het bijzonder de solo’s – is wel verbluffend en levert mooie momenten op. Deze bijna progressieve gitaarinsteek komt het best tot uiting in de instrumentale stukken en dat zijn er gelukkig nogal wat.
De bewondering voor klassieke muziek van Ralph Hubert horen we in de dramatische, en soms filmische instrumentale huzarenstukjes ‘Allegro Furioso’ (in vergelijking is Dream Theater heel toegankelijk), ‘Moderato’ en het drukke ‘Allegro’ dat dit album afsluit. Ze zijn allen gebaseerd op een klassiek stuk. De zang, de nummers en ook de productie konden heel wat beter. Ik zou dit album eerder geschikt achten voor fans van heel ingewikkelde progmuziek dan aan thrash fans. Ze moeten wel eerst luisteren of ze niet afknappen op de zang. De gelimiteerde versie bevat ook een dvd met een concert in Frankfurt uit 1991.
