VOODOO HIGHWAY: Broken Uncle's Inn

Voodoo Highway was founded in Spring 2010, but I would not be surprised if the members of this Italian band once started in a Deep Purple cover band. Everything on this debut ‘Broken Uncle’s Inn’ breathes the vibe of Deep Purple at the time of ‘Space Truckin’ and ‘Smoke On The Water’, in other words their ‘Machine Head’ and ‘In Rock’ era.
It results in a fine, diverting album that gives you a sunny mood: fetching songs, excellent, somewhat bluesy guitar skills in the vein of Ritchie Blackmore and a delicious vintage Hammond organ sound. Of course vocalist Federico Di Marco is not Ian Gillan, but he manages to render the smooth rocking songs properly. ‘Till It Bleeds’ really reminded me of ‘Space Truckin’, even the vocal start is almost the same. For the rest there is nothing to complain about: catchy songs with the title track and the ballad ‘Heaven With No Stars’ as personal favourites. ‘Broken Uncle’s Inn’ got an excellent mix and mastering by Simone Mularoni (DGM) at the Domination Studios (San Marino). Thus we know that everything sounds great! Are you in the mood for a proper Deep Purple/Rainbow sound with a contemporary touch, then check out Voodoo Highway!

Voodoo Highway werd opgericht in de lente van 2010, maar het zou me niet verwonderen als de leden van deze Italiaanse band ervoor in een Deep Purple coverband gespeeld hadden. Alles aan dit debuut ‘Broken Uncle’s Inn’ ademt immers de sfeer uit van Deep Purple ten tijde van ‘Space Truckin’ en ‘Smoke On The Water’, hun ‘Machine Head’ en ‘In Rock’ periode dus.
Dat betekent een aangenaam album waar je een goed humeur aan over houdt: aanstekelijke songs, uitstekend, ietwat bluesy gitaarspel naar Ritchie Blackmore model en een heerlijk vintage Hammondorgel. Natuurlijk is zanger Federico Di Marco geen Ian Gillan, maar hij redt zich wel om het rockende materiaal naar behoren te vertolken. ‘Till It Bleeds’ lijkt wel erg op ‘Space Truckin’, zelfs de vocale start doet er aan denken. Verder valt hier weinig over op te merken: leuke songs met het titelnummer en de ballad ‘Heaven With No Stars’ als persoonlijke favorieten. ‘Broken Uncle’s Inn’ kreeg een excellente mix en mastering door Simone Mularoni (DGM) in de Domination Studios (San Marino). Dan weten we dat alles snor zit. Heb je zin in een album met een onvervalste Deep Purple/Rainbow sound met een huidige toets, houd dan Voodoo Highway in de gaten!
