CROWN OF AUTUMN: Splendours From The Dark

We never expected this resurrection. It is true, Italian Crown Of Autumn did release a meritorious debut in 1997 (‘The Treasures Arcane’), one we bought in that era, but afterwards we never heard of this project of multi-instrumentalist Emanuele Rastelli again. After fourteen years of silence, suddenly ‘Splendours From The Dark’ is about to be released in a partly new line-up (that’s evident after all these years). Drummer Mattia Stancioiu, formerly session musician, is still behind the drum kit, but Gianluigi Girardi for clean vocal parts is new. I had to get used to it, especially during the first tracks he sounds kind of forced and it did not seem to be an improvement. Fortunately the raspy vocals of our pivotal man are still present and in the end not that much has changed, although roughness of the material is a bit smoothened.
Consequently in 2011 one can better speak of melodious epic dark metal; black metal influences are reduced to tight and hooky guitar skills. One might detect some pithy, vigorous acceleration in most of the songs, but the sublimated female vocals of Milena Saracino for instance, result in a very quiescent song ‘Ultima Thule’. Fortunately the band swallows the bait in the surrounding songs ‘Forest Of Thoughts’ and ‘At The Crystal Stairs Of Winter’. Acoustic guitar fragments and wealthy layers of keyboards in the background however regularly stop this fury, not speaking about the modern tinged ‘Spectres From The Sea’ as occluding track. Without any doubt Crown Of Autumn has improved on a technical level, but it is an open question whether they will connect to the contemporary scene. Simultaneously with the new album, their debut will be released again with a new mix and mastering. ‘The Treasures Arcane’ will be expanded with the first demo ‘Ruins’, so that you can find out what this band had to offer in the nineties. Review of this old gem will follow.

Deze verrijzenis hadden we nimmer verwacht. Weliswaar heeft het Italiaanse Crown Of Autumn in 1997 een verdienstelijk debuut uitgebracht (‘The Treasures Arcane’) dat we ons nog levendig herinneren, maar daarna hebben we nooit meer iets vernomen van dit project van multi-instrumentalist Emanuele Rastelli. Na veertien jaar stilte is er plots ‘Splendours From The Dark’ in een deels nieuwe bezetting opgenomen. Drummer Mattia Stancioiu, destijds sessiemuzikant, is nog steeds van de partij, maar Gianluigi Girardi voor de cleane zangpartijen is nieuw. Het is wennen, want vooral in de eerste nummers zingt hij nogal geforceerd en leek dit ons geen verbetering. Gelukkig zijn er ook nog de rasperige vocalen van onze initiatiefnemer en blijkt er verder weinig veranderd te zijn, hetzij dat de ruwe randjes zowat bijgeschaafd zijn.
Anno 2011 kan men dan ook beter spreken over melodieuze epische dark metal en zijn de black metal invloeden gereduceerd tot strak gitaarspel. Er zijn weliswaar nog enige pittige acceleraties te detecteren in meerdere songs, maar de sublimerende vrouwelijke vocalen van Milena Saracino maken van bijvoorbeeld ‘Ultima Thule’ wel een erg rustig nummer. Gelukkig geeft de band in de omringende songs ‘Forest Of Thoughts’ en ‘At The Crystal Stairs Of Winter’ wel even gas. Akoestische gitaarfragmenten en weelderige lagen toetsen op de achtergrond breken de furie echter veelvuldig af. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de op moderne leest geschoeide afsluiter ‘Spectres From The Sea’. Technisch is Crown Of Autumn er vanzelfsprekend op vooruit gegaan, of ze aansluiting zullen vinden bij de huidige scène durven we te betwijfelen. Gelijktijdig wordt ook hun debuut in een nieuwe mix en mastering terug uitgebracht. ‘The Treasures Arcane’ wordt verrijkt met de eerste demo ‘Ruins’ zodat je even kan natrekken waar deze band de mosterd haalde in de jaren negentig. Bespreking van deze ouwe parel volgt.
