SKALMOLD: Baldur

When a band hails from Iceland, we always have high expectations. A few years back, Solstafir really overwhelmed me with their debut album ‘Masterpiece Of Bitterness’ and their successor ‘Köld’. Now we have a new band coming from Reykjavik who really deserves the predicate of seminal newcomer. Skálmöld is the name and they did not go over one night ice to make a captivating masterpiece of ‘Baldur’. Since their inception in August 2009, the guys (six musicians) worked hard on this conceptual album. Baldur happens to be the protagonist of the story. Initially he is a wealthy man with a happy family life, but suddenly things change when his house and land was destroyed by evil forces. They even murdered his family. With two survivors of his warriors, he starts to look for revenge. The music is an impressive journey through the harsh Icelandic landscape, a journey that ends in a dramatic way, but it surely speaks to the imagination.
Right from the very outset, with the intro ‘Heima’, you notice that this is a band with an original approach. The solemn harmony vocals remind me a bit of Asatru chants and they are a prelude to ‘Aras’, where Skálmöld shows his metallic side. That is rough, with suiting sturdiness and classical heavy metal guitar patterns, while vocals appear to be very intense, yet intelligible. At least when you are familiar with their vernacular language, since all lyrics are written in a kind of ancient, poetic Icelandic, not even that clear to the habitants of the island. Robust harmony vocals and the use of oboe are characteristics that add a personal touch to the Skálmöld sound. That’s why a song like ‘Sorg’ has guitars with momentum and acoustic guitars, while organ adds an epic tinge. On the other hand, the band goes for a pure rock ‘n roll approach. Some parts of ‘Upprisa’ even remind me of punk, while the hacking ‘För’ is raucous like Motörhead. But mark you, always regaled with more epic parts. The second part of the album is even more epic and there are the tracks that really stand out and make me use any superlatives. ‘Kvaoning’ for instance, appears to be a song with fetching folk melodies, but later on, wilder parts pass into keyboards and a progressive sounding, sensitive guitar solo. Very compelling, surely when some massive choirs join in too. A stunning track! Next to an amazing guitar solo, in ‘Hefnd’ we can enjoy a vocal contribution of Solstafir vocalist Adalbjorn Tryggvason and I bet you will instantly recognize his typical intense style! ‘Valhöll’ leaps to the eye with Tyr-alike chants in the beginning, a spoken fragment, but most of all the heaviness of a great metal band. The highlight is the ten minutes long ‘Baldur’ in which all fantastic elements of this new band are blend to a mind-blowing composition. This is an essential release for all Viking metal fans, but even those who think that the genre has become predictable, should check out ‘Baldur’. One might speak of a revelation!

Wanneer een band uit IJsland komt, zijn de verwachtingen altijd hoog gespannen. Enkele jaren terug wist Solstafir me te verrassen met het sterke debuut ‘Masterpiece Of Bitterness’ en de opvolger ‘Köld’, nu is er een nieuwe band afkomstig uit Reykjavik die het predicaat beloftevolle nieuwkomer helemaal waarmaakt. Skálmöld is de naam en zij gingen niet over één nacht ijs om van ‘Baldur’ een beklijvend meesterwerk te maken. Sinds de oprichting in augustus 2009 werd er met man en macht (zes muzikanten) gewerkt aan dit conceptalbum. Baldur is de protagonist van dit verhaal. Aanvankelijk is hij een welgesteld man met een gelukkig familieleven. Plots verandert dit wanneer een onbekende vijand zijn landgoed verwoest en zijn familie uitmoordt. Met twee van zijn overlevende krijgers gaat hij op pad om zijn vijand te wreken. De muziek is een wervelend avontuur doorheen de ruwe natuur van IJsland, een tocht die dramatisch eindigt, maar sterk tot de verbeelding spreekt.
Meteen van bij de intro ‘Heima’ merk je dat hier een originele band aan het werk is. De epische samenzang heeft wel wat weg van Asatru gezangen en vormt de prelude naar ‘Aras’, waar Skálmöld zijn metalen kant toont. Die is ruw, met gepaste robuustheid en klassieke gitaarpatronen, terwijl de zang intens maar toch verstaanbaar is. Tenminste, mocht je de inheemse taal spreken, want alle teksten zijn in een soort IJslands waar de inwoners soms zelfs enige poëtische achtergrond moeten hebben alvorens te kunnen volgen. Kloeke samenzang en het gebruik van een hobo zijn karakteristieken die Skálföld een heel eigen geluid geven. Daarom heeft een song als ‘Sorg’ naast stuwende gitaren ook akoestische passages, terwijl orgel een episch tintje toevoegt. De band gaat in sommige songs ook over tot pure rock ’n roll, zo doen sommige stukken in ‘Upprisa’ me aan punk denken en kan het hoekige ‘För’ naast Motörhead gaan staan. Let wel, altijd doorspekt met stukken met epische geladenheid. Het tweede deel van het album is nog meer episch en daar staan ook de tracks die me het meest de superlatieven doen boven halen. ‘Kvaoning’ bijvoorbeeld, is met zijn acht minuten een track met een aanstekelijke folk melodie, maar de ruwere passages gaan later over in keyboards en een progressieve, gevoelige gitaarsolo. Erg slepend en beklijvend, zeker wanneer er later nog samenzang bijkomt. Een topnummer! Naast een fantastische gitaarsolo horen we in ‘Hefnd’ ook de typische, intense vocale gastbijdrage van Solstafir zanger Adalbjorn Tryggvason en reken maar dat je hem meteen herkent! ‘Valhöll’ heeft dan weer typische Tyr samenzang bij de aanvang, een gesproken stuk en vooral kernachtige heftigheid van een heerlijke metal band. Klapstuk is het tien minuten durende ‘Baldur’ waarin al die fantastische kenmerken van deze nieuwe band nog eens aan bod komen. Dit is een essentiële release voor alle Viking metal fans, maar ook zij die het genre te voorspelbaar vinden, moeten ‘Baldur’ zeker horen. We kunnen van een revelatie spreken!
