DOCTOR MIDNIGHT & THE MERCY CULT: I Declare: Treason

This new conglomerate with slightly decadent imago is founded on a cold winter night in Oslo, when the streets were covered with a thick layer of snow. Their talent and experience was compiled in the glamorous Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult. Who is taking part in it? First of all vocalist Hank von Helvete, former front man of Turbonegro and recently starring in a Swedish movie about the life of Dutch/Swedish troubadour Cornelis Vreeswijk. Furthermore we see guitarists Anders Odden (his rich past talks about services for Satyricon and Celtic Frost) and Audun Stengel (Apoptygma Berzerk), bass player Tim Skold (from glitter boys outfits like Marilyn Manson and KMFDM) and drummer David Husvik from the progressive band Extol (I once saw them as support of Opeth).
This colourful collective produces groove-laden rock with decadent, mostly distorted vocals; the kind of stuff that reminds me a bit of Rob Zombie or – when going back in time even more – Iggy Pop. After the dark spoken intro ‘You Are God’ expectations are not completely redeemed. The sharp, penetrating voice of Hank, together with the stamping rock and dynamic riffs is artificial and frivolous in ‘Sign My Name’ and the proud title track. It is greasy rock ‘n roll with slightly industrial influences in ‘Bleed Idiot Bleed’ and an overdose of bass. Quite rough this song, in contrast with the following ‘(Don’t) Waste It’, since this is more of a sleazy rock style. A kind of sing along song and not so far from hair metal, although the riffs are too heavy for that kind of music. The flaunting ‘Blame Is The Game’ is a fast runner, but my favourite is the slower (even a bit doom-like) ‘Ok (We’re Just About To Die)’, evoking reminiscence with Iggy Pop and Killing Joke. Towards the end there are a few fillers (the four last tracks are more of the same; a gimmick, a sniff of punk and a sing along song). The sum of these experienced musicians does not result in a masterpiece, only in a proper shock rock album. A bit less distortion on vocals would have been better as well.

Dit nieuwe conglomeraat met licht decadente inslag is ontstaan op een koude winternacht in Oslo, toen de straten bedekt lagen met een dikke laag sneeuw. Het talent en de ervaring van vijf muzikanten werd gebundeld in het glamoureuze Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult. Wie maakt daar deel van uit? Ten eerste zanger Hank von Helvete, vroeger de frontman van Turbonegro en onlangs in Zweden te zien in een film over het leven van de Nederlands/Zweedse troubadour Cornelis Vreeswijk. Verder de gitaristen Anders Odden (het rijke verleden meldt staat van dienst in o.a. Satyricon en Celtic Frost) en Audun Stengel (Apoptygma Berzerk), bassist Tim Skold (van de glitterpakjes outfits Marilyn Manson en KMFDM) en drummer David Husvik van het progressieve Extol (die ik ooit als support act van Opeth bekeek).
Dit kleurrijke gezelschap maakt groovende rock met decadente, meestal vervormde vocalen dat me ook wel aan de stijl van Rob Zombie en als we verder teruggaan in de tijd, Iggy Pop, doet denken. Na het donker gesproken intro ‘You Are God’ worden de verwachtingen echter niet helemaal ingelost. De penetrante stem van Hank, samen met de stompende rock en dynamische riffs klinkt gekunsteld en frivool in ‘Sign My Name’ en het trotse titelnummer. Het is de vuige rock ’n roll van ‘Bleed Idiot Bleed’ met zijn lichte industrial invloeden en een overdosis bas die nog redelijk ruw is, maar het volgende ‘(Don’t) Waste It’ kan men omschrijven als sleazy rock. Een meezinger dus, waar de hair metal niet veraf is, al zijn de riffs te zwaar voor dat soort metal. Het pronkerige ‘Blame Is The Game’ jaagt lekker voort. Mijn favoriet is het tragere (zelfs wat doomachtige) ‘Ok (We’re Just About To Die)’ dat beelden oproept van Iggy Pop en Killing Joke. Naar het einde toe staan wel wat zwakkere opvulsels (de vier laatste tracks zijn meer van ’t zelfde: een gimmick, een vleugje punk en een meezinger). De som van de ervaren muzikanten komt dus niet helemaal tot uiting in een meesterwerk, maar in een degelijk shock rock album. Wat minder vervorming op de zang had ook wel gemogen.
