DOMINANZ: As I Shine

This is presented as atmospheric dark metal with industrial influences. After several spins of ‘As I Shine’ from this Norwegian trio – the single is followed by a full length debut – the industrial influences fortunately are not rattling electro rhythms, but the achievement to create a cold, decadent atmosphere. Maybe the musical roots of the musicians add just enough momentum (they all have a past in black metal bands) instead of selling their souls to commercial success. On the other hand it cannot be denied that the ten tracks on ‘As I Shine’ turned out very accessible and catchy. Indeed, they give and take a bit between trying to appeal to a broad audience (thus danceable) and their under wealthy keyboards covered heaviness.
Dominanz is the matured descendant of a project, Cult Of Deception, in which the pivotal man of this dominant outfit, Roy Nordaas (once in Taake), started in 2006. He found congenial souls in drummer Frode Gaustad (ex-Thy Grief) and guitarist Jorn Tunsberg (in the early nineties in Immortal for a while and also ex-Old Funeral). With such references in mind, you are quite surprised when hearing the groove-laden ‘Infinity’ to start with. Dark, male vocals immediately refer to gothic flavours (especially of the late nineties). Keyboards give ‘Agony And Domination’ something epic, while vocals and music slightly have any black metal elements, yet they mainly have an overall gothic decadent atmosphere. Samael, Moonspell, Tiamat; they all crossed my mind for a moment. In many songs you hear any female background vocals and eventually the solemn sung fragment ‘Abusos’ is far away from proper black metal. All and all the raucous vocals and excellent guitar sound in ‘The Philanthropic’ and ‘Last Day Of Your Life’ end up in a positive balance. When Nordaas uses his calm, straight-faced voice, his vocals are very reminiscent of Johan Edlund’s (Tiamat). Other songs make me conclude that Pain fans will instantly have a soft spot for Dominanz. The combination of artwork, imago and lyrics create a soundtrack for a world full or erotic oppression, slavery and dominance. All for the sake of entertainment and controversy, I guess, but nevertheless only a composition like ‘The End Of All There Is’ is really engrossing.

Men brengt dit aan als atmosferische dark metal met industrial invloeden. Na meervoudige beluistering van ‘As I Shine’ van dit Noorse trio – na een single het debuut – blijken die industrial invloeden gelukkig geen ratelende electro ritmes te zijn, maar het creëren van een koele, decadente sfeer na te streven. Misschien dat de muzikale bronnen van de muzikanten hen nog juist dat snuifje pit geven (allen een verleden in black metal bands) in plaats van hun ziel te verkopen aan de commercie. Eén en ander kan niet verhinderen dat de tien tracks op ‘As I Shine’ bijzonder toegankelijk zijn en ja, een beetje schipperen tussen een breed publiek aanspreken (en dus dansbaar) en hun onder dikke lagen toetsen verstopte heftigheid.

Hij vond gelijkgestemden in drummer Frode Gaustad (ex-Thy Grief) en gitarist Jorn Tunsberg (begin jaren negentig even in Immortal en ook ex-Old Funeral). Met zulke referenties wordt je bepaald verrast wanneer het groovende ‘Infinity’ als eerste aan de beurt is. Donkere, mannelijke vocalen verwijzen onverbiddelijk naar gothic metal (en dan vooral die van eind jaren negentig). Keyboards geven ‘Agony And Domination’ iets episch, terwijl vocalen en muziek nog voorzichtig lonken naar black metal, maar toch vooral een decadente gotische sfeer hebben. Samael, Moonspell en Tiamat; ze schoten me allemaal te binnen. In vele songs is er ook nog wat vrouwelijke achtergrondzang, zodat men in het plechtig gezongen stukje ‘Abusos’ heel ver af is van black. Al bij al zorgt de ruwe zang en de uitstekende klank van de gitaren in ‘The Philanthropic’ en ‘Last Day Of Your Life’ toch wel dat de balans naar positief over slaat. Wanneer Nordaas zijn kalme, onbewogen zang hanteert lijkt zijn stem sterk op Johan Edlund (Tiamat), terwijl sommige songs me doen vermoeden dat Pain fans hier onmiddellijk enthousiast over gaan zijn. Samen met het artwork, het imago en de teksten brengt Dominanz hier dan ook de soundtrack van een wereld vol erotische verdrukking, slavernij en dominantie. Alles ongetwijfeld enkel entertainend en controversieel bedoeld, al is enkel single ‘The End Of All There Is’ als compositie zo sterk dat ze me beklijft.
