KAUAN: Kuu

Music is a universal matter; it flies over borders like a bird on his delighted flight. That’s how it is possible that Anton Belov, residing near the east part of the Oral, close to the border with Kazakhstan, once got fascinated by the Finnish atmospheric band Tenhi. Thus his musical vehicle got the name Kauan, named after an album of the Finns. Kauan started as black metal band with some folk influences, but they softened things with every album. Nowadays we better come up with terms like folk, neo-classic or postrock. However, the music remains blackened romanticism and intense, but on the other hand also very soaring and dreamy.
Once Kauan had temporary more musicians, but the main core is multi instrumentalist Anton Belov and his muse/violiniste Lubov Mushnikova. For this fourth album ‘Kuu’ (moon), he used some guest musicians on bass, drums and incidentally guitar licks. Alina Roberts is responsible for the esoteric, ethereal female chants.
The compositions of Kauan are, without exception, lengthy, but the first song ‘Tähtien Hiljainen Laulu’ for instance, includes themes that come back a few times, so that everything is recognizable and not too complex. You must be aware of the fact that it is a contemplative record bringing peace in your mind and very suitable to listen to at dusk with the crescent moon in the evening sky. Guitars are rarely present, the main atmosphere is created by classical piano and soaring synthesizers. Now and then it seems as if the whole band joins in (if we could speak of a band), but the word “eruption†or “outburst†is too strong for it. Let’s call it going in slight crescendo. The violin has a pretty important function and it sounds enchanted beautiful, but sad as well. You have to be gifted to make this music, without getting long-winded. Anton’s voice is a fine addition to this soundtrack of moonlit icy sweeping plains. A remarkable fact: lyrics are in Finnish, not Russian. He makes a melodious parlance of Finnish language, it even sounds a bit Italian alike from time to time.
Kauan used to be with Firebox Records (a doom-like flavour in the music is still there); ‘Kuu’ is their first album for Avantgarde Music and also the premier for the use of only real instruments (no tricks with samples, synths, tapes, recorders). It gives the music heartfelt warmth. When you are in the right mood, this is very beautiful music. Aficionados of releases of Prophecy Productions (like Tenhi) should listen to this, as well as Pink Floyd fans (‘Suora Liila Sydänkÿrä’ with finally emotive guitar soloing)! !

Muziek is een universeel gebeuren, het vliegt over grenzen als een vogel op zijn heerlijke zweeftocht. Zo kan het gebeuren dat er in het oostelijke deel van Rusland, dicht bij de grens van Kazachstan ene Anton Belov gebiologeerd geraakt door de Finse atmosferische band Tenhi. Zijn muzikaal vehikel noemt hij dan ook Kauan, naar een album van de Finnen. Kauan begon als black metal band met een snuifje folk, maar werd elk album zachter, zodat we nu beter termen als folk, neoklassiek of postrock boven halen. De muziek blijft echter zwartromantisch en intens, maar ook erg zweverig en dromerig.
Ooit bestond Kauan wel tijdelijk uit meerdere muzikanten, maar de vaste kern is Multi-instrumentalist Anton Belov en zijn muze/violiste Lubov Mushnikova. Voor dit vierde album ‘Kuu’ (maan) maakte Belov gebruik van gastmuzikanten op bas, drums en incidenteel ook gitaar. Alina Roberts zorgt voor de esoterische vrouwenzang.
De composities van Kauan zijn zonder uitzondering lang, maar het eerste nummer ‘Tähtien Hiljainen Laulu’ bijvoorbeeld is al opgebouwd uit terugkerende thema’s zodat alles herkenbaar en niet te complex wordt. Je moet voor ogen houden dat dit een rustgevende, beschouwende plaat is, geknipt om in de schemering bij de wassende maan te beluisteren. Gitaar valt er amper te bespeuren, de sfeer wordt gecreëerd door piano en zwevende synthesizers. Af en toe lijkt het of de hele band “invalt†(vooropgesteld dat we van een band zouden kunnen spreken), maar het woord uitbarsting is te sterk. Laat ons het “open bloeien†noemen. De viool speelt een vrij grote rol en klinkt betoverend mooi, maar ook droef. Het is knap dat de muziek nooit langdradig wordt. De zang van Anton is een aangename toevoeging aan deze soundtrack van een door de maan beschenen ijselijke vlakte. Een markant feit: de teksten zijn in het Fins, niet in het Russisch. Hij maakt van het Fins een melodieus parlando dat zelfs wat Italiaans aandoet.
Vroeger zat Kauan bij Firebox (een doomachtig sfeertje in de muziek blijft behouden); ‘Kuu’ is het eerste album voor Avantgarde Music en ook het eerste waarop alle instrumenten echt zijn (zonder trukendoos zoals samples, synths, tapes, recorders). Het komt de warme uitstraling van de muziek ten goede. Wanneer je in de juiste stemming bent is dit heel mooie muziek. Liefhebbers van de releases van Prophecy Productions (zoals Tenhi) moeten dit zeker eens beluisteren, net zoals Pink Floyd fans (‘Suora Liila Sydänkÿrä’ met eindelijk gevoelige gitaarsolo’s).
