GHOST BRIGADE: Until Fear No Longer Defines Us

In 2007 a new rising star was born on the Jyväskylä firmament. FIY: Jyväskylä is a middle-sized town in Finland where very much musical talent lives. The expectations Ghost Brigade created with their debut album ’Guided By Fire’ and ‘Isolation Songs’ are immense! In the meantime the five-piece toured a lot and every time I watched them live, they sent shivers down my spine. They did not remain unnoticed, even at huge international festivals like Summer Breeze, Graspop and Wacken Open Air and travelled through Europe in the wake of Amorphis.
Ghost Brigade makes you dream away during thoughtful, melancholic reveries in one moment, but next they burst out in a superior shape of furious rage. Their fluent music has any reminiscence with fellow townsmen Swallow The Sun and Swedish masters of gloominess Katatonia, without being a copycat. For the third album ‘Until Fear No Longer Defines Us’ they chose the familiar environment of the Seawolf Studios with producer Antti Malinen. The result is captivating, melancholic and overwhelming. Without any remarkable changes in global sound, the band has written ten new songs again, waiting to be the soundtrack of the next upcoming autumn (the album will be released at August, 19th – exact two years after its predecessor).
‘In The Woods’ is a fresh, surprisingly introvert beginning. It immediately makes you think: “What an exceptional top notch quality this band is!†Only with plucking, semi-acoustic guitars and Manne Ikonen’s voice, they render the essence of melancholy. The contrast with the scream-like exuberance of ‘Clawmaster’ is huge. Here they swallow the bait with core-like vocals and heavy robust guitars. In the second verse they return to the contemplative vocals with suitable instrumentation. How magnificent are those melodious accents of guitarists Tommi Kiviniemi and Wille Naukkarinen! It is a natural evolution that singer Manne has gained self-confidence through the years; the result is more clean vocals on this record and a stronger contrast between his vocal extremes. They go for more unity in a song during ‘Chamber’ and ‘Traces Of Liberty’: the first one is quiescent beauty, the second one rolls over you like a bulldozer. ‘Grain’ on the other hand, is a paradigm of thoughts about the insignificance of a human being and excels in fetching vocal lines. Every song is a highlight, a gem in which emotions are transferred into compelling soundscapes. The compositions have an average length of six minutes, but in ‘Torn’ they cross the nine minutes line and occluding track ‘Soulcarves’ gives of eight minutes of that amazing chiaroscuro they master so well. Thus Ghost Brigade has created a third masterpiece in a row with ‘Until Fear No Longer Defines Us’. Definitely a contender for the lists of the year!

In 2007 verscheen een nieuwe rijzende ster aan het Jyväskylä firmament. Ter verklaring: Jyväskylä is een middelgrote stad in Finland waar erg veel muzikaal talent huist. De verwachtingen die Ghost Brigade geschapen heeft met het debuutalbum ’Guided By Fire’ en ‘Isolation Songs’ zijn immens! We konden het vijftal ook meermaals live aanschouwen en telkens liepen de rillingen over je rug. Zij bleven niet onopgemerkt op grote internationale festivals zoals Summer Breeze, Graspop en Wacken Open Air en reisden heel Europa af in het kielzog van Amorphis.
Ghost Brigade laat je het ene moment wegdromen tijdens beschouwende, weemoedige overpeinzingen, maar barst dan uit in een superieure vorm van furieuze woede. Hun vloeiende muziek heeft overeenkomsten met stadgenoten Swallow The Sun en de Zweedse meesters van weemoed Katatonia, zonder er een kopie van te zijn. Voor het derde album ‘Until Fear No Longer Defines Us’ koos men de vertrouwde omgeving van de Seawolf Studios met producer Antti Malinen. Het resultaat is beklijvend, melancholisch en overrompeld. Zonder aanwijsbare veranderingen aan te brengen heeft de band weer tien nieuwe songs geschreven die de soundtrack van de komende herfst gaan worden (het album komt uit op negentien augustus – exact twee jaar na zijn voorganger).
‘In The Woods’ is een verrassend introvert begin, waarbij je meteen het gevoel krijgt: “Wat is dit toch van een uitzonderlijke klasse!†Slechts met tokkelende gitaren en Manne Ikonen’s heldere stem wordt hier de essentie van weemoed vertolkt. Het contrast met de schreeuwerige exuberantie van ‘Clawmaster’ is groot. Men gaat er meteen keihard tegenaan met aan –core grenzende vocalen en heftige gitaren. In de tweede strofe keert men terug naar de beschouwende vocalen met bijpassende kalm instrumentarium. Wat zijn de melodieuze accenten van gitaristen Tommi Kiviniemi en Wille Naukkarinen toch weer prachtig! Het is een natuurlijke evolutie dat zanger Manne zich zelfzekerder voelt, met als gevolg meer cleane vocalen en nog een sterker contrast tussen zijn vocale uitersten. Zo kiest men in ‘Chamber’ en ‘Traces Of Liberty’ voor meer eenheid in een song: het eerste is verstilde pracht, het tweede rolt over je heen als een bulldozer. Een toonbeeld van mijmeren over de nietigheid van een humaan wezen is ‘Grain’ met zijn aanstekelijke zanglijnen. Elke song is een hoogtepunt, een pareltje waar menselijke emoties omgezet worden in een meeslepend klanktapijt. De composities zijn gemiddeld zes minuten lang, maar in ‘Torn’ overschrijdt men de negen minuten en afsluiter ‘Soulcarves’ biedt ons acht minuten laveren tussen het spel van licht en donker dat Ghost Brigade zo meesterlijk beheerst. Zij hebben met ‘Until Fear No Longer Defines Us’ dan ook een derde topalbum op rij gemaakt. Straffe kandidaat voor de jaarlijstjes!
